DC Candidates

Anyone who saw his Minnesota defense, were they fundamentally sound, did they play with discipline? I only saw them against VTech and that offense the Hokies trotted out was awful, so hard to tell.

He coached with Schiano for a couple of years, which leads me to believe he knows fundamentally sound, disciplined defense

We've recruited a ton of athletic defensive players with good measurables (pause) the last few years. I don't think we need some exotic complicated scheme. Just coach the talent up and put them in the correct position, and we should be much better on defense. Our guys played really slow this year, because they had no clue what they were doing IMO. Play smart disciplined defense and they can play fast.
Their O had WR Jackson and features 2 solid RBs Taylor and Major. OL is made up of typical B10 guys with the exception of 1 guy that could be the 1st OL taken in the draft. The offense sputtered most the year and the defense had to hold. D features a few guys of note, a seasoned DL (Striggow) and a seasoned LB (Lindenburg), both will have shots getting drafted. Perch in the 2ndary was good, but that unit is very well coached. They also have DE Joyner, but he fought nagging injuries. Imo, they keep stuff in front of them and tackle well in space. I was in CA taking my kids to Disneyland and went up to Pasadena to watch them play UCLA, my first time at the Rose Bowl, so I've had an eye on them all season. Their fans were very cool.

For those who have you on ignore - and it’s not as many as @Empirical Cane but still 🤣 , here’s a critical piece of information from your post…

Banks wanted to bring someone that Mario didn't want, and Mario wanted to keep someone that Banks didn't want. While it's sad that the negotiation fell apart over two individual staff hires/retention…”
His "talks" with Dabo fell apart, too. Wouldn't be surprised if it was the same issue...

And this is why you are a dishonest poster.

I never...NEVER...said he was "allowed to hire his own staff". He was allowed to bring a position coach.

Unlike what you and some other bull****ting porsters said, these coordinator jobs, and the ability to bring some of your own staff, have never been all-or nothing.

Yes, we have dopey posters who hold out the false myth of "Mario should just let the new DC hire the whole defensive staff". That is not going to happen.

At the same time, we have dishonest posters such as yourself who act like coordinators are never allowed to hire staffers ever. Which is also untrue.

It's a negotiation. Banks wanted to bring someone that Mario didn't want, and Mario wanted to keep someone that Banks didn't want. While it's sad that the negotiation fell apart over two individual staff hires/retention, it is wrong to sit here and criticize a DC candidate for wanting to bring one (or even two) of his staff along with him. That kind of stuff is very common.
There's the problem right there. The new DC needs to be able hire his own position coaches. If Mario is going to be stubborn about it again, this thread is going to reopen again in two years when we're looking for a new coordinator

I've never been to Clemson... but those South Bend winters can be rough. AG seems like the kind of guy that would be into the Irish and their history and all that. I doubt he leaves for anything but a HC job.
South Bend is a ****hole outside of the University. Clemson is actually a nice town. Would Golden work for Dabo since Dabo was his nail in the coffin?

Again, outside of maybe bringing one coach with him (and that's SOMETIMES)…This happens nowhere in CFB
If we had good position coaches on the defensive side of the ball, I could see why Mario would want to keep them. Who would want to be co-workers with Nicholson and Chevis Jackson?

Oh I'm not defending them…I'm just telling you. You are saying what a new DC needs to be able to do…It just doesn't work like that anywhere.

For the record, I don't think D-Nice is terrible at all. But he wouldn't be a deal breaker for me either, obviously.

I think you are overlooking the obvious.

Many CIS porsters have held out this mythical ideal of "fire everyone and let the new coordinator hire everyone". And yet, that NEVER happens. Anywhere. Not just Miami.

And on the other extreme, some DIFFERENT porsters are saying that the head coach should select everyone, and the new coordinator should select nobody. And that is just wrong too. Many coordinators bring one or two staffers from their old employers.

We just need a happy medium. If somebody can work with JT and not with Nicholson fine. Or vice versa. I don't care. Just figure it out.

Let the HC and DC come to an agreement on who to retain, who to bring along, and who to hire new.

Just get it done. And stop allowing CIS porsters to invent a myth ("Mario should fire everyone and let the new DC make all the hires") that has not happened and will not happen. In the eyes of certain CIS porsters, Mario fails every time he doesn't take THEIR advice on how to make hires, even though nobody else does it that way.

If he can’t learn his lesson now, he’ll never learn.

No slam dunk DC will say yes if they have to agree on retaining current staff members and not get full autonomy over picking who THEY want on THEIR staff. Mario says he’ll let his DC’s have full control, yet his actions say completely opposite.

See Banks, see countless others. Stubborn is as Stubborn does.

It’s maddening, it’s asinine. Just leave that side of the ball alone man. What has Taylor and Nicholson (amongst others) proven to be protected like this? We’re still going to recruit just fine.

You’re being given funds to land a big time DC. Stop shooting yourself in the foot.

Did it? One of our coaches was #1 in the nation in nearly every important category
1 player changed all that and look what happened when Cam sat out the second half…… it sure didn’t look like the number one offense in the country

I was alluding to the defense, I should’ve mentioned that.
