DC Candidates

Honestly a DC doesn't have to be any super **** hire where they run some complicated system and some creative play calling guru. That's what you want on the offensive side of the ball.... If the DC and whoever they hire as position coaches (especially DB if they are a LB coach) gets our LBs and Safeties to have great tackling, pursuit/effort, and play smart and instinctually, then all you gotta do is just hit on talent at CB, EDGE, DT - which after this portal period I think we probably have all three of those. Thats kinda why I don't really mind the Pat Fitzgerald type of hire. Like Idk it just doesn't seem all that complicated to me. With the CBs we just brought in, IF our young DLine is ready to produce (and Bain returns to frosh form), then it's literally just all about getting our LB and Safety room to take a major step and get the best performances out of them possible.

I dont understand the muschamp hype, he hasn't called a defense in years and just demoted himself to an off the field role this season to spend more time with his family. Don't think he is itching to uplift his family and go back into full time coaching any time soon.

I personally love going the NFL route for DCs, they deal with more complex offenses in the NFL. So it’s a bit easier for them once they go to college. Look at how Robert Livingston improved Colorado defense after being the Bengals safety coach for 8 years. Colorado went from the 125th and 123rd Total and scoring defenses to the 35th and 43rd. It did wonders for AL Golden as a defensive coach as well.

Jim Leonhard #1 Option
Derrick Ansley
Denard Wilson
Clint Hurtt
Daronte Jones
Anthony Campanile
Steve Clinkscale
Gerald Alexander
Patrick Toney
Jordan Kovacs
Austin Clark

Let Clint stay with my Eagles. Thank you! He’s doing a great job there
Vic Fangio is doing a great job transforming that Eagles Defense. I'd challenge the impact Hurtt is actually having.

Bring a vet DC either from the college ranks or a grey-haired NFL defensive assistant vet. Someone that has seen it all, can get these cats aligned right and communicate. Mario controls all the recruiting anyway so not worried too much about talent acquisition from the DC directly.

in the event anyone wants to read it, but it’s mostly opinion based.

only bit of significance imo. ^

Interesting. Will have to research Henry a bit more. Hmmm I see his background is mainly coaching db's and he's also from Immokalee. Has coached all over the south too before Illinois so he should have some recruiting ties where Mario likes. Seems like a solid candidate if we got turned down by Banks and not getting anywhere with Santucci.

Banks turned us down according to Nakos.

The former Penn State and Illinois defensive coordinator turned down the Miami defensive coordinator job, sources tell On3. The Tigers are expected to make a run at Banks.
Sounds like he didn’t make the next round of interviews

I would be heated, promoting the guy whose DL underachieved all season to DC is a terrible move. I would replace JT before I made him DC, that DL should not have been that bad this season.

I don't want him as DC either. But the DL certainly wasn't bad…Maybe not as dominant as we wished but defensive line yards, pressure rate, yards per rush etc…were still between above average/very good

The problems were scheme (especially in the flats and on the edge) and a really weak secondary. Teams really schemed explosiveness and big plays against us too easily

Leonard isn't leaving Denver. He will be the DC after Vance Joseph leaves. He also felt slighted by his alma mater for not giving him the hc job and he doesn't want to return to college

Would be a nice option, but he’s on the back end of his career and would have zero interest.

Have you watched the number 1 defense in the NFL in Philly with an aggressive DL full of young players and working under Fangio? I think he was also DC in Seatle

So an aggressive DL and great defense under Fangio, who is the actual DC. Got it. The 9ers have the #1 rush defense in the NFL and an aggressive LB unit. Should we throw their LB coach into the mix?

Yes, he was the DC is Seattle. Do you know how he did in Seattle while he was DC? His defense ranked bottom 5 in both passing and rushing defense in both 2022, and 2023.
So again, why should he be the DC for us again? If he didn’t go to UM, would you even know who he was?
