DC Candidates

On3 throwing Tim Banks (TN) name into the conversation. His contract ends January 31st. Fans are still ****ed about Ohio State end to the season and talk of going conservative on defense in big games...

Is a solid choice. Defense was good in just about every category and did it vs a high level of comp. Won’t have to pay a buyout either

The thing is.. he has to go conservative in big games because they’ve had a dog **** secondary since he’s been there (while also having a specialty coaching the secondary I should add) along with Willie Martinez. He tried to put McCoy on an island and play press man on Jeremiah Smith and he got cooked.

Could do a lot worse but that’s a red flag in itself.

And if Willie Martinez comes here… I’ll be outraged.

So we expected 10 wins from a first time head coach with no resources but 8 from a veteran head coach making strong salary and exponentially more resources?

Lane wins 9/10 at Ole Miss in the SEC, Fran Brown just won at Syracuse. Manny 9 at Duke. Lashlee 10 at SMU. Bielema at Illinois.

Why do we lower the bar for Mario?
Because context matters and success is not always linear. Look at Florida. That fan base wants more than 8 wins per season and Napier's overall record is bleh. But they have recruiting momentum, an appealing young quarterback and would be crazy to fire Napier.

Lane Kiffin is actually a great example. They won 10 games in his second season and started the next season 7-0. They proceeded to **** the bed, lose their last 5 games and finish 8-5. Ole Miss didn't overreact and fire him and then he won 11 games last year. Now you could argue he is underachieving again. They would be CRAZY to fire him.

More than anything I want this program to be competent every single season, which, having watched the past 20 years, feels like it is asking a lot. But we don't get there by cycling through coaches every 3-4 years because we expect 10 wins every season.

Maybe nothing gets fixed, look like a mess and go 7-5 and flame out in recruiting. Fine, I am all aboard the new coach train. But Cam Ward isn't walking through that door, so the QB play will be worse and that is fine, if we look like a disciplined and talented team elsewhere.

And if we are bringing in a Top 10 recruiting class next season, there is no chance you can fire him. Because those are going to get harder and harder to come by for teams not in the SEC or willing to spend $50 million.

This is a reasonable variable that I may have overlooked. I was not aware that he was going to make that much at Rutgers. I wouldn’t leave either 🤣🤣.
I only know because I thought the same thing about Schiano pulling a Chip Kelly when the news broke this morning...so I looked up his salary...and yeah we should explore other options probably.

But the football building is coming...

and the culture is fixed
And Ruiz is building a stadium at TropicalPark.....Or At the Coral Gables High School site.... or... where else did he say??? I forget....

Crazy that any of you are mentioning potential DCs who aren't Miami Hurricane Guys.

Butch Davis. Miami Guy. Not dead. There's your DC. Clint Hurtt. Miami Guy. Very alive. There's your DL Coach. Sean Spence. Miami Guy. In his prime. LBer Coach. DVD. Looks like a teenager. Miami Guy. DB Coach.

Guiry: not a Miami Guy. Sucked. Steele: not a Miami Guy. Wasn't great. Diaz: he went to FSU. Not bad DC though if you can stand the occasional 500 yards rushing against you. Blake Baker; not a Miami Guy. Not great. 'Onofrio; not a Miami Guy. Lulz. Lovett; didn't love it. Not a Miami Guy. Young; he was not young. Not a Miami Guy. Walton; kind of a Miami Guy. I don't frigging remember that season.

Radio Shannon; Miami Guy par excellance. Championship winning DC.

Hire an actual Miami Guy at DC; win championship. It so simple.

Happy New Year!

Randy Shannon suit his Alma Matter, not happening, plus he has been with UF and FSU, so NO

Butch Davis is a NO plus The U does NOT like him

Clint Hurt not leaving NFl

Sean Spence and DVD great guys lacking experience!

We need experience and wisdom, not experiments!

He’s not my first pick and I get the initial response is “why would he do that?” But I wouldn’t mind Greg Schiano here as DC. Head Coach with decent success at a middle of the road program. Mario’s mentor. If he really wants a big job, the trend the last few years is a top coordinator from a top program having success (Broyles type) versus a head coach at a meddling D1 program.

I know he’s hated to death on this board for some reason, but as a DC with head coaching experience that could tell Mario “hey I want to spend money in this area” and Mario would actually listen, he’s a resume (maybe not a name) that makes sense.

Again, not my first choice. In a perfect world, I’d rather a young successful candidate that is hungry and going to turn this defense in to a juggernaut. We’ll see which way the wind blows.
I would love to see Mario and Schiano game planning together.

Appreciate the sarcasm. Malzahn did the exact move I’m talking about and UCF has been a far better program than Rutgers in the last 5 years. Maybe Schiano is happy where he’s at? But if he wants a potential for a big job, being a highly successful coordinator at a top program is the move currently. What better place to show your defensive genius than our crap storm of a defensive situation and he’s got a great relationship with Mario.
I guess you didnt realize Malzahn was getting fired. He did. thats why he quit and took the OC job
