DAY 2 PRACTICE THREAD

Not until no d and golden got here did we start tripping about our LB size. Futch was a big dude, couldnt lace Spence's cleats. A guy like grace needs to be on the field and not situation downs either. Every season they keep talking about how many guys doing 225 how many times and we get mauled against the run. Absolute lunacy. We are in the speed state why are we lookin for lumbering LBs? Ridiculousness. Teams get the edge on us so easily its a joke these days

Nonsense. Before Golden came in people were incessantly whining about our undersized LBs getting run over by backs and not being able to shed blockers. Many even frequently criticized Spence, saying how hard he played but that he just wasn't big enough. The true joke is how so many fans will take whatever position is the opposite of our situation, so they can complain and whine.

This. People HATED how small the linebackers were. Something about "we need to be big and physical upfront...LOOK AT ALABAMA!!!!"

i don't know, we always did well with small(ish) lbers. 5-11 to 6-2 max.
barrow, smith, armstead, marley, morgan, webster, sharpton, vilma etc.
bigger than that and you ended up at d end.

The bottom line is that when we had Sharpton, Spence, McCarthy, etc. (all of whom we would LOVE to have back, in hindsight) people were *****ing that we were getting pushed around and targeted the linebackers as their example. The "Fire Swasey" force was stronger then than it ever has been.

Bottom line is when you win, whatever you're doing is awesome, and when you lose, whatever you're doing is the worst.

If we were to, say, win the ACC this year...everyone on the team would be a hero, including guys like Thurston Armbrister. They would go from "this guy shouldn't be playing anything but special teams" to "solid role player on a great team".

I think in today's game where teams are going more uptempo, spread offenses with a lot of passes and getting players in space, big LBs are even more out of place.

Most teams aren't lining up and pounding the rock. They're spreading defenses out and throwing the ball all over the field. That requires smaller, more agile LBs like a Telvin Smith or a Jermaine Grace. We don't need Donte Hightowers or Brandon Spikes all over the field getting exposed.

I'm not dismissing your point, but the counterpoint is similarly valid. With the advent of the spread and de-emphasis on pounding the rock, the versatility of having two outside linebackers capable of rushing or dropping back makes it much more difficult on quarterback reads.

This time next season, this dude is gonna look and hopefully play like Anquan Boldin.

Under Shannon we were poorly condition and was our down fall. Personally I never called for any big lumber LBs. That never has been our thing. Sean Spence was our best player at 202. U see now we are markedly slower than other teams. They get the edge whenever they want and thats ridiculous for any miami team.

I don't disagree. I like having some more speed at linebacker and don't mind the smaller LB. That was Miami's signature for a long time. However, for fans to now complain about the bigger LBs when there was a LOT of complaining about the smaller LBs just 5 years ago, is the issue I have. They will simply complain no matter what the situation may be.

Who's whining other than you whining about fans? I just don't buy into all the brainwashed talkers on here bemoaning Grace's lack of size.

Big and fast beats small and fast. No doubt. But artificially trying to balloon up a guy like Grace is foolishness. He's a total bad *** and a great football player who can fly and plays without fear. We need that a lot more than we need artificially bloated guys.

You can't sit around for 3 years wasting the eligibility of dynamic play-making warriors like Grace hoping he hits some magical 225 weight while you play some inferior guy who is bigger. Playmakers need to be on the field.

As usual your reading comprehension stinks. I agree Grace should be on the field. I'm pointing out how back when we had small linebackers, there were MANY posters, and I'd guarantee many of the SAME posters, whining about how our LBs are too small, and we need to be big like Alabama. Even Sean Spence was being criticized as an undersized LB who tried hard but couldn't shed blocks and would get run over by running back. Now some of the same people are saying how great he was (and I agree he was) and whining that our LBs are too big.
