Dawson Scheme notes

Tell them to go look at what Guidry is doing misting multiple starters on the DL and no dominant DT.
Exactly! He had injuries on the DL and he’s had to adjust scheme & personnel with a very thin depth chart.

I know defense can be simpler in terms of assignment football (you have this coverage area, you cover the deep third, you blitz, twist, etc, vs this formation).

But the offense can put pressure on the defense just by not being basic: motion, route trees, putting stress on defenders, especially the safeties to make a decision.

My suspicion, as much as a TVD detractor that I have become, coaching is failing him in a lot of situations. He’s also responsible for a lot of the mistakes but he and the team are likely playing better if the offensive coaching were just better.

RPO at its core is hand off or pass.
Read option is handoff or QB run
Triple option is handoff, qb run or pitch to rb

Ive seen read option with pop passes and things of the sort attached, but a read option RPO would be a lot for a QB, not sure much many teams are attempting that.
That's what I figured, thansk.

Mario likes game manager QBs and TVD isn’t a game manager.

Frustrating that the offense we had against TAMU has been missing since we started ACC play.

We can win with the “fizicul bro style” that @Memnon loooves, and if we win I’ll be fine with it, but it’s not going to get TVD in rhythm and some times you lose games that way against teams like GT and UVA that you should blow out because you just don’t score enough points

I've said it multiple times, Dawson is easily replaceable. Mr. No Innovation whatsoever...

It seems that way.

I can’t figure it out but you probably know best: is it Dawson or is it Mario or is it both?
If it's a collaboration...then we've got major problems. Dawson (aside from one yr) isn't anything to not only write home about, but he's far from irreplaceable. I have a Sick feeling this is going to carry over till next yr...and considering our brutal schedule, it could become extra toxic.

It would be a ******* killer to have to go and get another OC. 3 in 3 years is ******* criminally bad judgement.

He definitely has a lot of faults but it’s not just him.

You would see it in the play calls, scheme and route concepts.
he limits the offense. He is one read and he cant handle big games. he never shows. He's like Kaaya. a stat padder against weaker teams.
I dont know what Dawson is but you have to wait until tvd is gone to judge.

I'm not gonna get super deep into the scheme, but I will observe that it looks like we run a ton of option routes (esp with Restrepo), and I think that's part of why TVD hones in on him so much. I wish he didn't, but here we are. What I *wish* we did more of is crossing routes and mesh concepts. We neglect the short/intermediate middle of the field so much. We replace slants and those crosses with passes to the flats off of motion, WR screens, and working stop routes/outs towards the sidelines instead. Those stretch the field horizontally which *should* set up more deep shots being wide open vertically, but they just haven't done that so far to my liking this year.

Like I said - I'd love to see us run more slants out of the slot, seam/sit option routes *with the TE* over the middle to pressure LBs more in coverage, RB angle/arrow routes out of the backfield to attack the middle underneath coverage, and the mesh/crossing route concepts quite a bit more. It's super frustrating to see teams use these things against us week in and week out while we stall with what we're doing currently. Just mix in those above routes attacking the middle of the field like 25% of the time and other things would open up a lot more thru the air. The crazy part is - what I'm calling for are all Air Raid staples and we ought to be seeing more of them out of Dawson's play calls given his lineage.

The next 4 games will tell a lot about Dawson ... we need the offense to click to win the games and that means scoring 30 plus

Nov/Season rest on his shoulders now with whoever QB he decides to play

Anyone speaking with absolute certainty regarding the chicken or the egg (TVDs suckiness determining simplistic offense or vice versa) has an agenda.

It’s quite a slippery slope to say “oh the offense was going great, we were scoring a bunch of points and then Mario decided to get in the way.”

Like what lol

All I know is that for the last couple of weeks I’ve seen TVD throw into triple coverage. Someone had to be open.

I think part of the problem is that Mario hired a coach with an air raid background to run an offense with a power run game, and Dawson is having a hard time adapting to it. Our running plays are generally dive up the middle and almost always on first down. Defenses are just run blitzing to take away the run, and then dropping back into zone coverage on the resulting 2nd/3rd and long. Every yard we gain in this offense seems like a struggle. Granted TVD is contributing to the problem but there is something fundamentally off about this offense. It should be better given the talent we have on the OL. If Mario and Dawson decide to part ways, Mario should just hire a true power spread OC.

Not necessarily. Roman from TOS did a really good breakdown of what teams are doing against our offense. On any given pass play we've got 3 receivers going up against 7 defenders. That said, of course TVD shouldn't be throwing into triple coverage and yes, he is missing open guys.

Good points.

My understanding is that all of the receivers are running option routes. It’s not just Restrepo.
