Cristobal assesses team progress after Saturday scrimmage

Disagree on the last part. When I see teams like wake forest and NcSt be able to win 9 games in the acc without all this talent and depth my question is why does miami have to have a loaded roster to win 8 games in the acc?
Exactly! People around here acting like you need 10 all Americans to win 10 games! You just need to develop guys and run a system that fits them! We’ve got more 4-5 star guys on roster than everyone but Clemson and we only won 10 games once in the last 20 plus years. Wake, Pitt, NC state, even BC and GT have won 10 games more often than us.

Problem is we need 5-6 impact transfers as does every other major program.

We realistically can hope for a DT and WR who are impact and others who are just depth.

The days of UM dominating the portal are done I just hope we have a legit DT we have been backchanneling with because without one we are getting owned all season in the middle
Honestly a DT and WR may be enough if we can get that. A depth RB would be cool

People could also recognize the roster is a sales pitch to save the coaches butt. When we start losing the corch started slipping it into the post game press conferences. It's a time tested formula.

We've been sitting okay with the blue chip ratio for a long time.

The Gattis lovers died away after a few games of apologizing for him. The Mario lovers will too if we don't win this year.

RB - can’t rely on Chaney + Parrish combo, sadly need to act like Citizen is done (he’s not, but it’s going to be a long road to recovery and no guarantee he’s ever the same). Go get a #1 if available.

WR - need two, **** if it was up to me, there would be no cap on this number. My expectation is we end up with 1 that’s pretty close to a #1, which allows Colbie some freedom in 1v1 situations. Personally think one of the freshmen supplants Restrepo, ceiling is higher.

OL - 1 body would be wise, then pray for no injuries.

DLine - I think Deen starts over JHH, dude is a JAG. Need a war daddy regardless to overtake both. People sleeping on Deen…set your expectations low for Gore, and be pleasantly surprised if he can generate some pressures as a situational pass rusher. Speaking of, wouldn’t mind another pass rusher for depth on the edges; seen enough of Harvey to know he too is a JAG.

LB - need a starting quality LB

CB - I want two, but need at least 1 starting caliber guy

S - ditto as above.

Having a freshman replace Restrepo is a sign of better things to come. Hoping it happens as I don't understand the hype surrounding the young man.

Is he the type of guy you love in your team? Yup, absolutely, 100%. But he is not who we should rely on to get where we want to be - Restrepo is kind of like our offensive version of Flagg.

I think there’s some delusion here just like last season, they are sleeping on how paper thin this team is and how lacking the total talent is. They need to hit on the guys they do take after spring , it’ll be huge and Mario knows that. Hence why they’ll be so aggressive. Guys will come and guys will leave after spring but this won’t cut it as currently constructed.
I don’t follow other teams but who on Miami’s schedule has elite talent and depth? Clemson, A&M . FSU has more talent but are they elite? I don’t think you need elite talent to compete in the ACC next year. If we’re 5-6 players from competing with Duke then this program is in real trouble!

I definitely understood what you said. It was just a silly, overblown take
Last year we heard the WRs were in trouble and that’s how it played out

This year it’s a better group but we’ve got work to do so I expect it to play out like that unless we add a bigtime portal guy

How is that overblown?

Ya know what. Don’t answer that. Just keep thinking you know.

The thing is - Duke schemed around their talent disadvantage. That’s what we’re hoping Dawson and Guidry can do. Last year, our talent advantage was overblown as usual, AND we were getting boat raced in the X’s and O’s.

Truth is people get salty when you mention their favorite high school recruits are just JAGs and busts. Factor that in with a definitive weakness in the coaching department at coordinator positions, and you get a 2022 result.

Our roster is that of a middling ACC team. Don’t hit me with the high school rankings and stars - tell me what your eyes see on the field.

After we hired Guidry I went back and rewatched that game against Notre Dame

I could have geared up watching Marshall’s defense grossly outmatched on paper doing damage in that game

It’s bad enough over the years when we are constantly struggling with middle of the pack ACC teams but when we face a team that is clearly better than us, we don’t even give them a game. That was always deflating especially when you routinely watch college football teams do this on a weekly basis

Anyway. Rant over. I’m with you haha

We’re nowhere in the stratosphere of elite or even good with talent / depth. I swear this is deja vu from last year lol. Yall are giving me the exact same arguments I got last year. If we don’t pick up help we’ll be walking the exact same razors edge as last year.

I’ll dumb this down the best I can.

Mario shows up and realizes the talent and culture is far worse than anyone imagined. His hires couldn’t have gone worse. What you get is a 2022 season that’s filled with disasters. Mario identifies the coaching issues and despite operating at a pace UVA basketball would find slow, eliminated said waste.

Now with the roster…do you think you can just tell 50 players to get up and leave, and then bring in 50 portal guys? Wish it worked like that, but it doesn’t. That’s the sad truth…go ahead and name me 7-8 upperclassmen (non-transfers) that are Miami-caliber players. I can name 4-5 off the top of my head, and even one of those (Chaney) doesn’t count because he’s never lived up to the Greentree hype. These guys aren’t good enough and what’s worse, most didn’t develop in 2022 - either because the coaching at x position sucked, or they themselves Don’t have IT.

LT, TVD, Kinchens, Rivers…that’s all I got. Our best players are all transfers or underclassmen that haven’t gotten a chance to develop yet…were fixing it, it’s just not going to be as fast as we would like.

Kinchens + Question marks. But that doesn’t change that we lowered expectations considerably for Mario

1. People wish they didn’t watch last season because the product on the field was unwatchable. We said Mario would never let that happen.

2. Duke was terrible and blew us out without needing a complete rebuild. Early season we made excuses and pointed to USC and said they were different due to QB1 and 2 Portal WR1s. Got silent when Duke rag dolled us.

3. Along with Duke, we also blew out FSU under the failed “staph”. Both railroaded us last year and you now have FSU as a sure 2023 loss - and people are OK with that? Holy **** balls

4. How are we ok with the muttering of our QB1 basically calling it mid season and not only not replacing him through the portal, but losing QB2, a QB3 whose Spring progress is he can hit the passing net and a 3 star freshman? Not only didn’t we replace him, he’s the anointed QB1 again. That’s a culture problem when it was a previous staff…

5. I’m not on board with if it gets hot, leave, then come back when the going is better, especially if posters are going to come back throwing elbows like they worked the paint all game fighting for boards. No. If it gets hot, grab a beer and cry in it while the likes of MTSU **** you, like the rest of us.

6. TE. We brought in a blocking TE, FSU got a starter. Lost Brantley. Our depth is either oft injured, brand new or haven’t proven they can catch.

Lastly. No one here is quitting on Mario, but some sure as **** aren’t willing to lower expectations when we’ve invested more than ever and the previous 4-5 regimes the answer was not to be patient and let them work, it was yell louder, burn it down or you hate Miami and settle for mediocrity… no one was giving Lane patience if he produced a year 1 like that… but we’re here giving mulligans..

Let’s ******* go Mario! Fix it! We’re on the train with you!

I had these same arguments last year when I said the season could go to **** fast if any injuries happen, especially on the OL. This team has holes all over it and lacks depth at most positions. The season is long.

The 2020 roster / schedule / Acc has nothing to do with the 2023 versions, every season is its own story.

The talent we do have is mostly young or unproven. The defense being very shaky and thin. If we don’t add talent / depth things could go very bad again. That’s just reality.
Ok I’m down with this. A disastrous run of injuries could create a worse case scenario,
It’s laughable when people talk about us finding a starting ready P5 QB in the portal after spring practice.

No QB that is in the mindset to transfer (for obviously a chance to start) would want to come here with TVD. We’ll have a better chance to find a high quality QB in the portal after this season - not before.

Yeah getting a proven commodity will be TOUGH sell.

Getting a qb will have to probably come down to an evaluation of traits. Maybe you can get a g5 or fcs guy with game experience.

We should look for guys with air raid experience preparation wise. I don’t think it would be wise to get to confident and try to get a guy from a different system and hope to change him. That was part of Kong’s problem. We liked his physical and leadership traits but we tried to turn a run and shoot qb to an air raid qb and there was mixed results.

Finding an air raid guy with decent accuracy might be the best we can do. Hopefully he can hang when the live bullets fly if TVD misses any time.

It’s so discouraging because I really liked Brashard, George, Couch, Keontra, Harvey, Balom, Chantz, JHH, Markeith, Graves. Can’t believe so few have been impactful much less developed into high level players. JW always had a position issue, and makes as many big mistakes as big plays. Taylor changed momentum in games at times but disappeared at others. Rivers and Chaney have been walking wounded. Wes is super raw still.

Has to be the worst organic development of the roster since pre Schnelly. And I’m not even mentioning all the guys who transfered out or the guys we knew were projects and marginal coming in!!

Thank god for the portal. Imagine this team without Cohen, Lee, McCormick, Parrish, Young, Messidor, Kiko, Deen, Brown and Porter? JFC.

Disastrous ? Nah. A few injuries throws this current roster into a mess. OL, Rb, S, LB, cb and obviously qb. As of right now our cb room is scary healthy.

I’m so with you. I’m just at the point where I don’t expect anything from guys that haven’t shown much (in terms of the older guys). I’m excited for Kelly and Mesidor under Taylor’s tutelage now…but guys like Chantz and Harvey…they are what they are. Still have hope for Chantz because I loved him out of high school, but he really has yet to show it on the field. It’s now or never.

We as a fanbase just have to realize the talent ain’t there. We’re not that much more talented than the likes of Duke or Pitt or NC State, no matter what the stars or high school pundits declare. These kids were flat out misses and/or didn’t develop how we would have liked. Transfer portal gave us our best players, and look at where the departing ones ended up…mostly at a safety net in SMU (familiarity).

On the contrary, really excited to see how the freshmen class from 2022 progresses; that to me is the biggest indictment of both our changes in evaluations/identifying talent, and development. We will find out shortly enough.

FSU is an interesting comparison. I'm trying to remember when FSU had multiple top 10 classes in the last 4 years as I'm told thats a pre-requisite for winning 10 games. Or maybe while UM fans were mocking Norvell, he was building a strong culture in Tallahassee and we didn't notice it.

I know I’ve been one of the most negative on here lately relating to differentiated talent. But the one thing that does give me optimism is that freshman class and a good chunk of the second years. Mario IS doing what we expected. It’s just a slow roast which is agonizing to us fans. We need to be patient, Barring an exceptional portal haul over the next three months we’re one or two more seasons away from separating ourselves from the ACC pack.

Would this D2 guy who was on campus recently suffice?
Nah…he’s got traits but he’s very raw. We need instant help…there will be options in the portal in a few weeks. We just need to push our chips in there. You grab a bonafide #1 and a second guy, and this offense completely changes.

Really like the development with the big uglies, pass pro should be much better. Lee is a monster, Cohen is good. If Cooper takes that jump and Francis can solidify his spot…we have the potential to have as good of an o-line as any we’ve had in the past decade (I know the bar is low, but it’s a strong unit).
