MEGA Conference Realignment and lawsuits Megathread: Stories, Tales, Lies, and Exaggerations

Then create a relegation/promotion system where successful tier 2 teams can go up and schools like Vandy go down until they get serious about playing.
Sounds good in theory. How does a tier 2 team show they are serious about playing? Who makes that decision? What are the criteria? How can you show consistent improvement in the age of the portal as a tier 2 team? You know the best tier 2 teams will lose their best players to the portal each year.

They'll probably have to have some kind of method to get Tier 2 schools the ability to move to the big league unless Congress extends anti-trust protection like in baseball. Of course, how long until college football programs begin to lose their tax exempt status?

Take a look at the media rights and CFP checks from those two tiers and there's the answer
Yeah for sure, agreed that ultimately money wins out. Although you could make a somewhat slight argument that sold out stadiums and an invigorated student/alumni base is actually better for the school. And maaaaaybe gets the somewhat close to making up for lost media rights revenues??? Probably not.

But more so making a point that the crazy realignment talks may actually be somewhat good for college football.

Dennis Dodd: In February, ESPN will exercise its
option not to extend the ACC contract beyond
2027. Florida State -- having played the long game -- will have its out and be able to put itself on the market. FSU will do so at a much reduced rate to get out of the grant of rights since it will only have three years to run. Don't ask me where FSU goes, but if it is as free agent beginning in 2028, there will be Power Four interest. Basically, the next round of major realignment begins less than a month after the 2025 championship game.

Makes sense. My question for Mr. Dodd is this his "prediction" or does he have sources from ESPN stating as such?

He's either smoking the real good ****e or he's seriously upped his shilling for clicks game. FSU has acted like spoiled, entitled toddlers with realignment. Everything they've done to publcily besmirch the ACC is done to try to force ESPN to decline to renew the option. Regardless of whether the ACC is where any of us want to be, they have made it clear they want out now. They filed a lawsuit to get out of the ACC, want their notice of withdrawl to be retroactive to 2023 as part of their prayer for relief, and he thinks they're playing the long game?

"Playing the long game" as in not bailing prematurely and waiting until ESPN declines the extension option (which is of dubious validity) on 2/25, and leaves with a much reduced exit cost. Don't forget, ESPN already declined to extend when they declined the only extension option mentioned in the 2016 media rights agreement ... it had to be exercised by August 2021. That is the only option that existed when the GOR was signed by ACC members.

So basically FSU and Clemson spent all that money to find out that any ACC team can leave at a reduced rate prior to 2027 or just wait until 2027 and leave at no penalty?

Sounds we saved a crap ton of money without needing to do any work.
I think the FSU and Clemson cases had everything to do with why hopefully, ESPN doesn't opt in. I don't think it would take long at all to make a announcement if that happens.

We are playing the long game. If the 32/48/64 team league is a real thing as our Canes leadership seem to think it is, everything being done by FSU and Clemson now is a waste of time. Even if it isn't, or if the ACC collapses for whatever reason, we benefit and look better than the school that's on every social media outlet getting their daily whine on.

Yes, but thank God they did spend that money. If they hadn't, the contract wouldn't have seen the light of day.

It will be interesting to see how the courts rule whether the amendment is active or not. If they rule it is active, could they also rule the GOR is null and void since Phillips did not follow process in signing the amendment without a member vote?

Leave with no GOR penalty after the 2026 season, but there will still be some ACC exit fee, ideally less than the $130M stated. Big thing is to have huge seasons in 2024 and 2025 ... then possibly leave for the 2026 season with a full share P2 invite to the B10.

Yes, 100% agreed.

We're basically the kid in the group project that did absolutely nothing and still got an A+.
