MEGA Conference Realignment and lawsuits Megathread: Stories, Tales, Lies, and Exaggerations

Am I reading right?

105 scholarships??

Looks like it.

And somebody correct me if I am wrong, but this is pretty big for our baseball team, right? With the high cost of private tuition versus say UF, I would imagine every baseball player being able to get a full ride now is big. Or did we have ways around this already with the scholarship limitations?

Glad you folks with under 1,000 post counts have everything figured out regarding the Twitter parrots and their hot takes

Please continue keeping us in the loop, you guys are doing the Lord’s work
Bro we all start with less than a 1000 posts at some point. Doesn't mean we're new to following the sport.

All I'm saying is everybody is posting about FSU and Clemson getting out right now because they either hate the ACC or they're trying to cash in on clicks. The connected insiders I know have been pouring cold water on this since the rumors popped up last year of FSU imminently announcing their departure. Maybe FSU announces intentions to leave soon, but who is going to touch a team that hasn't waded through the legal hurdles of this yet?

Plus 34 full scholarships! The reason our baseball program has fallen off is because of tuition costs due to partial scholarships. This is why UF has gotten so good in baseball, owns Miami baseball now and has won 2 CWS. This is great news for Miami baseball, however, NIL will need to utilized on baseball as well. The P2 will separate further in the big 3 sports because athletic departments will be able to pay NIL. It is even more urgent to get into the P2!

The issue with Athletic Departments paying NIL directly is Title IX. Right now the NIL does not have to be equalized along gender roles because they are being paid by third parties, but that will change once the schools start offering NIL. They will have to equalize it across both genders. Paying 500K for a starting QB is great for the football team, but then you have to spend 500K on the women's Olympic sports to match that for sports that do not bring in a fraction of the revenue. That might be fine for giant state schools that have a bigger pie and robust student body, but it won't be for the smaller private schools.

I don't know why so many people assume Miami and FSU will be split. Conference expansion over the last decade has been with geographic pairs: Oregon & Washington, USC & UCLA, Oklahoma & Texas, Colorado/Utah/Arizonas...all either within the same state or bordering. You bring built in rivalries for TV that work outside of the designated home markets.

This is also in line with what the Flugaur guy has been saying, what that Athlon Lassan guy predicted with his "bold predictions", and would put into context what was meant by the recent report from Brett McMurphy that the B1G and SEC are "not interested" in FSU or Clemson if the rest of the ACC stays intact, ie FSU only gets in WITH another school that makes the package more broadly appealing, and same for Clemson.

In that context, FSU and Clemson need a more academically prestigious research school to pull them into the B1G, similar to what happened with Oregon and Washington. I'm sure the B1G would like to grab UNC and UVA first, but both are pretty dug into the ACC both culturally and politically, so they might not bail until the writing is on the wall and their state counterparts secure landing spots. So FSU going with Miami, and Clemson with GT sounds like a pretty bold yet sensible prediction.

Fluguar is a guy working out of his mothers basement getting Twitter clicks as a hobby. He isn't a legit sports journalist like Josh Pate and has "0" actual inside contacts. He and his nemesis @Genetics56 are two adult men who lack something in their family lives.

Forget what YOU BELIEVE makes sense as a "sensible prediction" ... nobody outside of ESPN / Fox and the commissioners of the B10 / SEC know what is really being negotiated / pushed for. In the middle of this is the "ACC Conference" which is literally a political creation of the NC State Government and the State of NC is pushing for it to continue operating solely due to the "tourism value" to the State of NC ... specifically the Charlotte Metro Area where it is estimated to have a $500M per year economic impact due to all of the conference games in different sports that are held there (championships specifically) that fill hotels and restaurants.

Both the B10 and SEC are being extremely cautious at this time due to the risk of being sued by the ACC for Tortious Interference. Everybody is waiting for one of two things to happen:

1). For judges in Florida or SC to rule that the wording IN the ESPN media agreement clearly state that when a school leaves the ACC they
take their future media rights with them. Sure, there might be appeals, but if both courts rule the same, it is basically game over. Anybody
can leave with rights and pay the ACC exit fee ... which will be challenged (specifically since there is no media deal in place past the 26
season).

2). Feb 2, 2025 ... the date that ESPN has to choose to execute the option to extend (and even then their right to do so will be challenged).
If they decline, game over, no media deal = no GOR. If they offer a REVISED media deal .. that has to be approved by members. Some
have stated they believe if a new media deal is not unanimously approved those not in favor can leave.

If the media deal interpretation that Clemson / FSU are claiming IS correct, that schools leaving leave with their FUTURE media rights, then FSU and Clemson will give notice of leaving, and then they WILL BE contacted by both conferences with offers and will be able to make a decision based on specifics at that time. ESPN doesn't want FSU to end up in the B10. UNC / UVA, outside of NC politics, the SEC would grab both in a heartbeat if the coast is clear.

Very good summary.

The other thing to note is that, regarding the exit fee, worst case it’s around $140mm, and today, that would be about a 4-5yr Breakeven based on SEC and BigTen payouts. However those figures are going up in future years, which would shorten the break even. However that assumes full shares at the new conference

Long story short, the ironclad $500mm cost to exit is getting whittled down by the month now that these court cases are proceeding

I wonder if ESPN actually intends to renew. I know "its cheaper, so why wouldn't they?" is the go to answer for a lot of people. But if they exercise that option, they'd be tanking the value of their own product. All the teams in the ACC would be at a significant competitive disadvantage for the next decade, hurting ratings in the process. The fallout would last much longer. The financial gap would likely bleed into other sports too. Like basketball programs of the golden children Duke and UNC.

So in the end.. wouldn't ESPN be hurting themselves by exercising the option? Especially now that its under a microscope. There'd be a lot of backlash.

Agree.

The flip side is that ESPN can be the "white knight" by not opting in for its 2027-36 extension with ACC and thus (seemingly) permitting FSU, Clemson and whoever else to move into free agency

So a month ago FSU and CLEMSON were a PACKAGE deal.

Now we thinking FSU and MIAMI are a PACKAGE deal?
