Coaching, Salaries and the Coastal

Before I begin, the goal isn’t simply to win the Coastal, as that is an incredibly low bar. The point is to further explain who we’re competing with on a regular basis as we play six games against these teams in the Coastal.

As you read the post below, I present the following questions:
  • If you were starting from scratch, which HC(s) in the Coastal would you hire?
  • If you were starting from scratch, which coordinators in the Coastal would you want?
  • If it isn’t the money, what is holding us back from dominating the Coastal?
As a frame of reference, Dan Enos was paid $1,500,000 last season. The second highest salary for a coordinator in the Coastal was Bud Foster at $1,000,000.

Please Note:
  • Duke (like Miami) is a private school. They’re not required to share their salaries and I couldn’t find any information about them.
  • I couldn’t find a source for Pittsburgh and their salaries for assistant coaches/coordinators. If someone can find one, I will gladly update.
Duke

HC: David Cutcliffe ($2,670,000)

OC: Zac Roper

Co-DCs: Ben Albert and Matt Guerrieri

Total Assistant Salaries:

Georgia Tech

HC: Geoff Collins ($3,000,000)

OC: Dave Patenaude ($400,000)

DC: Andrew Thacker ($450,000)

Total Assistant Salaries: $3,205,000 [Brent Key is their highest paid coach and not a coordinator at $600,000]

Dan Enos made more than both coordinators and Brent Key combined. Dan Enos was paid ~50% of GT’s total allotment for assistant salaries.

North Carolina

HC: Mack Brown ($3,500,000)

OC: Phil Longo ($600,000)

Co-DCs: Jay Bateman ($600,000) and Tommy Thigpen ($500,000)

Total Assistant Salaries: $4,075,000

Dan Enos made almost as much (~88%) as their three coordinators combined and was paid ~37% of UNC’s total allotment for assistant salaries.

Pitt

HC: Pat Narduzzi ($3,214,000)

OC: Mark Whipple

DC: Randy Bates

Total Assistant Salaries:

Virginia

HC: Bronco Mendenhall ($3,700,000)

OC: Robert Anae ($550,000)

Co-DCs: Nick Howell ($550,000) and Kelly Poppinga ($375,000)

Total Assistant Salaries: $3,400,000

Dan Enos made more than their three coordinators combined. Dan Enos was paid 44% of UVA’s total allotment for assistant salaries.

Virginia Tech

HC: Justin Fuente ($4,000,000)

OC: Brad Cornelsen ($490,000)

DC: Bud Foster ($1,000,000)

Total Assistant Salaries: $3,670,000

Dan Enos made more than both of their coordinators combined. Dan Enos was paid ~41% of VT’s total allotment for assistant salaries.

if it isnt the money what is holding us back from winning the coastal: were a **** program. It’s like asking what’s holding back virginia from winning the coastal

Again, you don’t get it.

Let’s keep it simple. The answers should only be limited to those teams in the Coastal.

1. Which team has by far the most talent?
2. Which team spends the most on football?
3. Over the last 30 years, which team has the most tradition in football?

so now you are rewriting your “questions” in an effort to argue with me because you don’t like my answer

typical and hilarious

1. You didn’t answer my questions. You made a porst.

2. Again, did you read the OP? This is about Miami and the Coastal. It is all there. It isn’t about Miami status in the P5. That isn’t relevant for this discussion. So can you answer the questions or no?

I answered your question you just didn’t like the answer so now you want to argue like usual because you are incapable of just making a point and think you’re running a 1L law school lecture

Where did you answer my questions? Post #27? When you compare us to Pitt and a low tiered P5?

So if you were starting from scratch, you would consider bringing in those coaches? Why Bronco or Longo?

Please keep in mind that Foster is retiring.

That is fair. Remember, you're not required to pick HCs and/or coordinators in the Coastal. The question is if you were starting from scratch, would you serious consider them?
Is this your ONLY comment on the whole post?

OP is so good at making points and bringing substantive discussion that he just repeats questions and attacks posters because he is incapable of making a point in a single declarative sentence. Really great stuff

Are you asking for my opinion? Please read the two posts which are linked in my OP. I have been very clear on this.

I didn’t know I can only answer and make points thats were acceptable to Tony Potato.

Are you going to answer my questions, which you never did?

I think we had this exchange in a thread yesterday. I'm not entirely certain what your ultimate point is but can surmise on my own that we've had horrible coaching and competent coaching has been the main on-field problem. Looking at your questions:
  • If you were starting from scratch, which HC(s) in the Coastal would you hire? Maybe David Cutcliffe but not over choices outside the Coastal.
  • If you were starting from scratch, which coordinators in the Coastal would you want? Bud Foster if he wasn't retiring.
  • If it isn’t the money, what is holding us back from dominating the Coastal? Horrendous coaching. We have more talent than the other teams and pay more in total coaching salaries than the other teams yet we have won the Division once in 15+ years.

The only thing holding us back, from that low bar, is our own incompetence. We have more than enough talent and resources but we fail simply because of our decision makers.

Anybody see the spending stat during the Clemson v OSU game. My memory is

OSU revenue 100 million. Expenses 50 million.

Clemson revenue 50 million. Expenses 48 million.

If my memory is accurate, Clemson appears not to be taking football money to prop up say volleyball. Maybe Miami needs to spend football revenue on football. Just a thought.

Check the disparity from Alumini related booster support at Clemson and UM and "Volleyball expenses" at Clemson vs UM.

Volleyball expense is a drop in bucket and womens sports are Title IX

1.) Just because MIA paid Dan Enos the highest assistant salary in the division this past yr, doesn't mean the school is paying the most for coaching salaries, has the highest football revenue, or is even allocating the highest % of revenue to football. I'm confused as to why paying Dan Enos $1.5 proves that money is not holding the university back? What about spending on support staff, facilities, etc? How did MIA's football budget compare to the other coastal teams for the other 14+ yrs?

2.) In CFB talent can easily be negated without spending because the essential nature of the sport is developmental.

3.) Tradition is also irrelevant in this discussion because it doesn't determine future success.
