## Encouraging news for those who want to see UM blitz more and play more man coverage:*Al Golden said last week UM will be more aggressive in its defensive approach this season.

Here's how Golden answered when WQAM’s Channing Crowder asked Golden what he says to people who criticize him about his loyalty to defensive coordinator Mark D'Onofrio.*

"It doesn't have anything to do with my loyalty to D'Onofrio," he said. "It has to do with: We*were better this year than last year. And*two seasons ago we played 14 or 15 freshmen on defense. Now we're
better. We've been trying to add to that and improve on defense during a very difficult time.

"Here's what our defense was good enough to do last year: They were good enough to win nine. Now we've got to get better and win more games. The offense wasn't good on third down [or] time of possession. Both of those directly impact defense.

"Anybody who wants to blitz and play cover 1, who wouldn't want to do that? We feel we have a group here that is going to allow us to be more aggressive. The deeper you are, the more athletic you are, the more things you can do.*******

"You can call all the pressers you want. If your fourth and fifth [rushers] aren't getting there, someone is hung out to dry down the field. We've made a lot of progress there, adding 14 guys [on defense] that can help us.*Most of our guys that had interceptions, sacks, caused fumbles are returning. Why would we abort right now?"

He is a used car salesman... Sad thing is many here will slurp this up.

This doesn't say anything. Granted, Al is great with the media and its positively impacted our program so I enjoy that about him.

I really think our fundamental issue was we were not getting to the quarterback. Our blitzes weren't effective either. That 3-4 **** didn't fool anybody because we sent the same Jack from the same spot every time we did it.

The fix is simple for me. 4-3. More speed on the D-Line. I'd rather be aggressive, have the greater chance for sacks, fumbles, hurries, and picks, even if it means sacrificing a little size in the running game. It fits our personnel. It fits us historically. It fits the region we recruit. At some point, 4 years later, if you've failed to recruit the personnel to run your ****** system then the onus is on you to adjust. We have 4 and 5 Stars all over this defense now, most of which are now very experienced, and there isn't a single valid excuse left. So you got your homie his one last year, hopefully he can work miracles. And no, being top 50 isn't a good enough improvement. Being bad isn't ok just because we've been awful.

Plenty of talent this year. Top 30 or GTFO.

What a piece of ****. Throwing the offense under the bus, yet again, to save his best friend.

He's right.
Personnel wise this will be the best defense he's ever had here at every position. DT is still TBD but I don't this the Juco kids will be any worse than Porter and Renfrow with the good possibility of being better.
So talent/experience wise this will be the best defense he's had on paper and that alone should mean improvement.
Add to that the more options in play calling like Al mentioned, more press coverage, blitzing, etc and we should see marked improvement with this defense.
And here's the icing on the cake, if the offense can be more efficient on 3rd downs and go from 34% or whatever they were this year to around 42-45% with all that I mentioned above the defensive stats will be a 180 from the past 2 seasons.
If we don't, someone has to be seen the door.

That interview makes me feel so much better. I feel like our defense is finally trending upwards.

tryiq, aqm, carter, young, owens, hester, etc all try to kid people on the field. Watching that cane freak video of denzel. one thing i noticed is gaines was afraid of contact as were the other seniors but he just stuck out.

When he has gotten to this point where he has to publicly deny his loyalty to Dorito, you know there is blood in the water.

you are 150% right!!!!!!!1

his friend also had to deal with an offense that was 118th in the country in time of possession. when you don't have depth and your best players are fresh and soph. its a lot. How many games did our defense carry us early in season? How many times did they start off well then get worn down? its wasn't all on him. this year you guys will realize how bad morris hurt us.

I'm just glad a media member finally called him on his cronyism. The heat is definitely on Doritos. Another season similar to the last two we had on defense and I think his head will roll and there'll be nothing Fat Al can do about it.

What a ******* tool.

And McGahee2TH is right, this isn't the first time he's thrown the offense under the bus.

Sad thing is, in regard to recruiting, without James Coley, we probably wouldn't have landed Chad Thomas, and plenty of other defensive studs in this cycle.

Did Crowder ask him to imagine how many games we'd have won if we weren't giving up 500 yards to everyone and their uncle?

Same old talk from Golden. I liked him a lot but this defense has me really questioning him. It's not even that it's not a good defense, it's ******* horrible..

Morris hurt us a lot.

That said, teams moved the ball against us AT WILL from 15:00 on the clock in the 1st Q.

Me too. As Ethnic said, "the blood is in the water" now. What is going on at Miami is the definition of cronyism. Yet some people still can't see what is in front of their faces. Crazy.

To take another line from my nig Ethnic, whenever someone says "it isn't about the money" it is usually is about the money. Same rule can be applied to "it has nothing to do with my loyalty to Dorito"

And lol at whoever says that the defense won games for us in the beginning, forgetting or blatantly not adding in the fact that we essentially played high school teams in the beginning. As soon as we hit conference play (Wake Forest) we looked just the same as we have in every game since Maryland. I wouldn't expect some of the mental giants around here to consider that factor, though.
