Interview: Merced California JUCO 4-Star CB Devron Davis Talks Football and 30-Plus Offers
October 24, 2015
Written by Ryan Wright
Twitter: @HogManInLA
In every sport coaches are always looking for that rare athlete that can change the fortunes of a given game on talent and athleticism alone. College coaches have identified a rare talent at Merced College, cornerback Devron Davis.
Davis is a true freshman working his way through a standout junior college season after lighting it up during his senior season for Franklin High School. The Stockton area recruit dazzled in all three phases of the game catching eight passes for over 300 yards with four touchdowns, carried the rock 10 times for over 300 yards with four touchdowns and racked up over 500 kick return yards. On defense, Davis had 33 tackles, a forced fumble, and two picks to complete his high school career. There has been no drop off in production at the junior college level seeing Davis compile 29 tackles, five pass breakups, a forced fumble, and one interception in just six games played.
College recruiters have flocked to California in hopes of pulling the 6’0”, 210 pound, star to their campus knowing they will have him for four years to play three. Some of the 30-plus colleges to offer Davis includes Arizona State, UCLA, Oregon, Nebraska, Illinois, Texas A&M, Alabama, Florida State, Georgia, Missouri, South Carolina, Tennessee, Kansas State, Utah, Washington, Ohio State, and Ole Miss.
In an exclusive Recruiting News Guru interview, I caught up with Davis getting an overview of his senior year and how he has transitioned his abilities to the JUCO level and received a recruiting news update.
Interview
Devron, college recruiters are blowing up your Twitter in-box this year but before you started tearing it up for Merced, how did your senior year go for you?
“I feel like it was one of my best years in football. My senior year was really good. I got out early and remained dynamic on offense. On defense, I played safety and was set on cleaning up anything that got to my level. It was a great year all the way around.”
How many offers did you have as part of the 2015 recruiting class?
“I had three offers; Arizona, Cal, and Washington State.”
Did you have any individual honors at the end of your senior season?
“I was first-team All-League.”
What did you work on in the offseason to prepare for your freshman season at the collegiate level?
“The biggest thing in the transition was just the mental part and getting physically ready. I worked on getting stronger and faster and keeping up with the pace I had set for myself. Physically I did not have to work on too much. Really it was just the mental part of football, and you can always get better at that.”
How has the transition been for you from the high school level to the junior college level?
“The transition was not a big transition. The speed of the game still feels like high school to me.”
What goals did you set for yourself entering the season?
“Just to come in and work hard.”
In your opinion, do you think you are playing well?
“I think I’m playing really well. I always want to play better because you can always get better.”
What are your strengths on the field as a cornerback?
“I feel like what makes me a good corner is my speed and my physicality. I know it going to get harder but I like going hard against the receivers I’m covering. I like to take the air out of my opponent early when they come to my side of the field.”
Because of your size, speed, and skill set you could easily play cornerback or safety at the next level. What position are most of the colleges recruiting you to play?
“Mostly corner. The Pac-12 schools, like Oregon, like me at corner. They know I can be a physical corner in their conference. I think some schools might move me around to safety or a little in nickel but primarily everyone is recruiting me to play corner.”
Devron Davis at Colorado State
Have you gone on any visits this year?
“I went to Colorado State over the summer. I have a couple of visits coming up and I’m undecided on another.”
You have over 30 offers right?
“Yes.”
Have you released your top schools yet?
“Yes. My top schools are Oregon, Arizona State, UCLA, Missouri, Texas Tech, and Cal.”
Have you set a time-frame for when you would like to have a decision made about where you will play your college ball next season?
“Not exactly. I’m going to wait until after all of my visits. I want to get a feel for the environments of the different schools. I want to feel at home. When I get that feeling, then I will make my decision. I don’t want to make a decision just to make a decision.”
Are you able to enroll at a program after the new year break?
“Yes, I’ll be able to transfer to a four-year in December.”
What are some of the other factors that will influence that decision beyond feeling at home?
“The coaching staff, the environment, and the DB (defensive back) coach. How I feel about those three things and how far away from home.”
Is there a player be-it on the college level or the NFL ranks that you like to watch to learn more about the game?
“On the NFL level I like watching Richard Sherman (Seattle Seahawks). I watch him a lot. I watch a lot of film on him and see how he plays different receivers and how offenses play against him.”
Do you know what you want to major in when you enroll at a four-year program?
“No sir. I’m undecided, but that’s very important to me. Whatever carries the major that I decide that I want to pursue will play a big factor in where I commit.”
What is your favorite part about the game of football?
“I like the physical part of the game. I like the adrenaline, the highs and the lows, I think it’s all beautiful. All the different parts compliment the game.”
Devron, thanks for your time today. Good luck with the rest of your season.
“Thank you.”
Missouri Tigers Offer JUCO Football Star Devron Davis
OCTOBER 6, 2015
MERCED, Calif. – According to his Twitter account, Missouri football has offered Junior College Devron Davis
Davis is 6-foot, 210 pounds and is ranked as the No. 5 JUCO cornerback in the 2016 class, according to the industry generated 247Sports Composite. 247Sports, and the composite, considers him to be a 3-star; though he says in his Twitter profile that he’s a 4-star athlete. Davis plays for Merced College, and boast offers from multiple other major football programs, including Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, LSU, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, Utah and Louisville.
With the addition of Mizzou, Davis now has 28 offers. He’s planning on announcing his Top 6 later on this week.

Davis plays defensive back for the Blue Devils, who are currently 2-3 on the season. According to stats on the Mercer college website, the newly offered Missouri target has notched 20 tackles, one interception, 3 pass break-ups and 1 forced fumble so far this year.
When watching his HUDL highlights, it’s easy to see his explosion as an athlete and why so many major programs have offered him so far. As a cornerback, he has very good size and gets an extremely quick break on the ball. He has solid footwork and is fast to come down hill and play physical at the line of scrimmage. Davis also has the agility and speed to flip his hips and run vertical with a route, and he plays the ball like a safety in the air—a true ball hawk.
Take all of the aforementioned qualities and it should make it easy to imagine Davis as a dynamic kick returner as well, and his highlights boast examples of him making multiple big plays as a kick and punt returner.
Overall it’s easy to see why Missouri offered Davis, and it’s safe to bet the Tigers won’t be the last major program to jump on his offer sheet.
Analysis of Devron Davis
Posted on July 15 by jensenjake123
The 55th 2016 Husker prospect that we will cover is Cornerback prospect Devron Davis.
Devron currently attends Merced Community College in Merced, California. He is originally from Franklin high school in Stockton, California.
Devron is considered a 3 star recruit by Rivals, Scout, and 247 recruiting services. While Rivals and Scout have yet to release their Junior College rankings for 2016, he is considered to be the
#4 JUCO cornerback prospect as well as the
#21 JUCO prospect in the nation regardless of position.
Other Offers
Devron has one of the more impressive offer lists of any husker prospects, as he sports offers from schools in all 5 power conferences, including college football heavyweights like Alabama and Ohio State. Devron recently named his initial top four, other than Nebraska the schools in that top 4 are:
Arizona State: Once again battling it out with Nebraska for a prized JUCO prospect (Eric Lauderdale), also the team that appears to have a slight edge in his recruitment. Team that has been steadily built up by Todd Graham and looks like it could be the sleeper team to watch out for in the Pac 12. Runs an ultra aggressive defense that wants to blitz from every angle and position. Scheme wise it is a solid fit, and there will be plenty of opportunities for early playing time in Devron’s career.
Florida State: Team that has been fantastic the last 2 years under Jimbo Fisher, going 27-1. Runs a complex 3-4 scheme that asks a lot out of its corners, as D coordinator Charles Kelly often leaves his corners on an island in order to pressure the passer. With Jalen Ramsey likely leaving after the 2016 season, the Seminoles will be looking for a hybrid corner/safety type to fill his role, meaning Devron will likely get an early opportunity at playing time.
Oregon: Arguably the most consistently excellent team the past 6 or 7 years under Chip Kelly and Mark Helfrich. Team that runs a bit of a funky defense under Don Pellum, as it is a scheme that shifts from a 3-4 to a 4-3 and almost always brings multiple defenders on blitzes. School that has utilized big, physical corners like Devron before (Ifo Ekpre-Olomu), so Devron will likely fit in very well at Eugene.
Eye Test
Devron is listed at 6′ and 210 pounds on his Rivals profile. Devron is an extremely well built prospect, one of those guys that you want coming off the bus first as he looks more like a NFL running back than a JUCO corner. Devron is very well developed in his lower body and has a muscular upper body. I’m not sure if his frame allows much more room to grow, but honestly he doesn’t need it.
Strengths on Film
The first thing that jumps out about Devron’s film is that he has tremendous burst and acceleration that allows him to break on the ball lightning quick to break up passes or land crushing hits. I don’t think I’ve seen a prospect in 2016 that breaks on the ball quite as well as Devron, as his film is full of him flying in from out of nowhere to break up passes, pick them off, or lay the wood.
The second thing that I like about Devron is that he is a patient cornerback. Most bigger corners have a serious issue with this, as they want to hit anything that comes into their area, causing them to be overaggressive and get themselves out of position. Luckily for NU fans, Devron isnt like that. Devron is extremely good at playing zone coverage, as he keeps his head on a swivel and waits for receivers to come to him. When he does see the ball thrown, he reacts and breaks on the ball lightning quick, usually making a big play.
The third thing that I like about Devron’s film is that he has tremendous ball skills and takes the ball away from opposing offenses. One issue with Nebraska cornerbacks since the epic 2010 secondary graduated is that they can get into position to make a play on the ball, but they don’t capitalize due to poor timing or poor ball skills. Devron can help in that regard, as he demonstrates fantastic timing and hands when going up for 50/50 balls, as his film is full of him making huge plays while isolated 1 on 1 with opposing receivers. Once he has secured the interception, Devron is even more exciting, as his experience returning punts makes him an extremely dangerous open field runner.
Weaknesses on Film
The first thing that I would like to see Devron work on is his press coverage at the line of scrimmage. Devron doesn’t get a ton of opportunities to show his press coverage abilities. When he does come up and press, I would like t see him make a bit better use of his hands, as he seems content to just turn and run with receivers instead of knocking them off of their preferred route. This is something that I think Devron will fix as he becomes more comfortable playing in a press scheme, so I think he should have the hang of press coverage around midway through his first year on campus.
The only other thing that I would like to see Devron work in is cleaning up his tackling form. Devron has a tendency to be a bit of a launcher on film when he comes down to defend the run. This method of tackling is not only ineffective against the better running backs in college football, but it can also lead to serious neck injuries. Devron needs to work on staying low going into contact before exploding upwards and shooting his arms to become a more effective tackler. This is another flaw that isnt to hard to fix, so I think Devron will shore it up as he continues to go up against better competition.
Final Conclusion
I’m a big Devron Davis fan after getting a chance to watch him on film, where he shows great instincts, fantastic burst and agility, and a willingness to come down and lay the wood. With Nebraska likely starting two seniors this year at Cornerback (Daniel Davie & Jonathan Rose), there is a serious need for an experienced and talented prospect that can step in right away and perform. Devron can be that guy, as he is more than Big 10 ready and might even be an upgrade over Nebraska’s current starting cornerback duo.
Can Nebraska Get Him?
Devron is going to be a tough get, as Nebraska is battling it out with some of the biggest recruiting bullies on the college football landscape for his signature. That being said, Nebraska has a very impressive defensive back tradition since 2009, and can offer a very realistic shot at early playing time in 2016. Right now I would say that Arizona State campus before the end of the summer, then I will start to really like our chances with him.

When is a three-star prospect not a three-star?
Merced College cornerback Devron Davis holds offers from Arizona State, Louisville, LSU, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pittsburgh, South Carolina, Texas A&M, Utah and others and seems to be gaining opportunities by the day.
Given his 6-foot-0, 210-pound frame with 4.4 40-yard dash speed, he has both the offers and measurements of a player who recruiting services won't be allowed to underrate much longer, as he has become one of the most coveted junior college players in the country.
"I'm really blessed and really appreciative," he said. "But it's a very stressful process, because you have to really figure out who wants you and who wants you because another school wants you. It's stressful, because you do only have two years and you want to come in and make an immediate impact right now to continue your football dreams."
Adding even more value to Davis' stock is his ability to help out on special teams.
"What coaches like about me is they like the fact that I can return punts and I wasn't just playing corner," he said. "They felt like that's a game-changing situation. I can play corner, then go back there and return punts. I can also play a little safety position or the nickel. They felt I was very flexible in the positions I could play and contribute to the team."
That wasn't always the case.
Coming out of high school, Davis said he didn't prioritize working out and lacked the focus to put in extra time developing his game. San Jose State and San Diego State were his lone offers as a senior, so he enrolled at Merced College (California) and hit the weight room.
"I think what changed by game... I was kind of, to say the least, a late bloomer. When I got to this level I grew a little bit, my arms got longer and I added an extra gear to myself with hard work and going to the gym every day," he said. "Just having that work ethic, that changed my game, because I didn't really work out in high school."
That work is paying off, as Davis now has 17 scholarship offers, including his most recent one from the Oregon Ducks, who could use some depth at cornerback after this season.
"I'd definitely say they are one of my top schools. I like Oregon, because, I mean, who doesn't like them? They are very vibrant," he said. "They have the best jerseys, the best facilities – they have everything you are looking for – best team. They fit me to a T as far as a DB."
Oregon State is also considering an offer to the talented junior college product, as Davis indicated he has spoken with the program about a possible offer in the past few days.
"Oregon State hasn't offered me yet," he said. "Coach Darrick Yray said they want me too and want me to come on a visit. That wasn't too shocking. I think an offer is definitely in the works. They are a good school. My cousin went there. They definitely have some firepower with me going there."
Despite the lack of an offer, the Merced College talent is intrigued by the Beavers. His cousin, Steven Nelson, played cornerback for Oregon State last season and was selected in the third round of the NFL Draft by the Kansas City Chiefs, which helps give Davis an inside look at the program.
Although the junior college talent lists Arizona State, Nebraska and Oregon as three of the teams that he finds most interesting at this point, he is considering visits to both Eugene and Corvallis before he makes a decision.
"Oregon State wants me to come during a game on an official visit, so that's always good," he said. "I definitely want to take an official visit to Oregon to see Coach John (Neal) and Coach (Mark) Helfrich."
Davis is one of the hottest junior college talents in the country, and it appears both the Ducks and Beavers will take a crack at landing the big, physical corner.

JuCo cornerback Devron Davis de-commits from Colorado State
By Rich Kurtzman on June 22, 2015
Like a cornerback trying to reel in an interception, the Rams had Devron Davis and lost him. Of course, it was of no fault of the Rams. After news broke that Colorado State had landed the former three-star cornerback Wednesday, offers from other schools of the Power 5 conferences came in.
On Sunday, Davis announced via Twitter he has de-commited from CSU:
I appreciate all the love ram fans and coaches have showed but me my family have made the decision to open my recruiting back up!
— devron prime davis (@dheisman7) June 21, 2015
The other offers which likely made him reevaluate things? They were from Louisiana State of the South Eastern Conference and Arizona State of the Pac-12. The lure of playing for a program that could one day compete for the National Championship probably helped Davis make the decision.
According to Colorado Sate’s Rivals page, the Rams’ 2016 recruiting class consists of six players currently. Davis was the only cornerback, but CSU and head coach Mike Bobo have landed four three-star players so far. More players will be added soon.

Now that's a steal.
Merced (California) College cornerback Devron Davis could have played Division I football at Oklahoma, Nebraska, West Virginia, Louisville, Pittsburgh, South Carolina, Utah or Washington State. Eight schools from Power 5 conferences offered him, but he turned them down.
He wanted to play for Mike Bobo at CSU.
Davis, 6-foot, 210 pounds, announced via Twitter on Wednesday that after a successful visit to Fort Collins over the weekend, he has committed to play at Colorado State University in 2016.
Davis is rated a three-star recruit by the 247Sports composite score and ranked as the 54th best JUCO player in the nation. As a freshman at Merced last season, he had 33 tackles, a fumble recovery, three interceptions and brought one of those back for a touchdown. As a kick returner, Davis averaged 18.8 yards per touch with a long of 50 yards.
His Hudl profile says he can run the 40-yard dash in 4.4 seconds, benches 295 pounds and squats 385 pounds with a 34 1/2 inch vertical.
Davis is the Rams' seventh commitment of the 2016 class and fifth in the past week.
Devron Davis, junior college cornerback, sets Oregon State Beavers visit
By Andrew Nemec | The Oregonian/OregonLive
on March 17, 2015 at 10:19 AM, updated March 17, 2015 at 2:11 PM
Merced College (California) cornerback Devron Davis doesn't yet have an offer and isn't rated on Rivals, but with a highlight video titled, "Welcome to Alcatraz" and growing interest from a handful of schools, it's not hard to see that changing in the near future.
The 6-foot-0, 210-pound defensive back has the size and physical style of play that many programs covet on the outside, and while he has not been offered by the Beavers, they appear to be keeping tabs on Davis.
That relationship intrigues Davis because his cousin, Steven Nelson, attended Oregon State and is considered a player to watch in the 2015 NFL Draft.
"Steve is my cousin on my dad's side," David explained. "We didn't really start meeting each other and talking to each other until six or seven months ago."
Since that time, Nelson has become a mentor to his cousin, and the two plan to hang out on Davis' April 4th visit to Corvallis.
"We definitely plan to hang out on the 4th to get to know each other better," Davis said. "I've been following the draft extensively. He's a great player and I kind of look up to him."
The JUCO corner, who has garnered interest from Arkansas State, Toledo, Utah State and others, indicated that he would likely commit to Oregon State if the Beavers extend an offer. In the meantime, however, he's waiting for the first scholarship to come his way.
