Recruiting roundup: 4-star DL likes Miami
August 28, 2015
Matt Porter

A few notes on Hurricanes recruiting to kick off your weekend …

* Four-star defensive tackle Darius Whitfield (6-1, 268), from Mobile (Ala.) St. Paul’s High, told Canesport he plans to choose between UM, South Carolina, Missouri and Florida on Oct. 13. He wants to take an official visit to UM before then.

* Four-star wide receiver Freddie Swain will visit Tennessee Oct. 10 and Miami Oct. 17, Scout reported. Swain (6-0, 177), from Citra-North Marion High, is rated the No. 3 receiver in Florida. Florida and USC are reportedly contenders. His teammate, uncommitted three-star defensive end Jordan Woods, will accompany Swain to UM.

* Rivals analyst Rob Cassidy on recent UM commit Jawaan Taylor, a three-star offensive lineman from Cocoa High: “They’ve got to like his power. That’s what pops off the page when you see him, his upper-body strength … he carries some bad weight, but the raw tools are there and he moves his feet well for someone 330 pounds.” Cassidy predicted a redshirt season as a freshman for Taylor, so Miami can “reshape him.”

* The Hurricanes are the frontrunner to land three-star offensive tackle Brandon Walton, of Seminole High, according to Canesport. Walton (6-5, 285) said he likes Miami more than Vanderbilt, one other school he’ll visit this fall. Walton’s other major-conference offer is from Kentucky.

* UM safety commit James Pierre said UNC is making a run at him. He told Canesport the Hurricanes are “definitely at the top” but there’s a “small chance” he could flip to the Tar Heels. Pierre (6-2, 170), a three-star recruit, said North Carolina State, West Virginia and Bowling Green are recruiting him the hardest, aside from UM.

* Canesport reported UM is working hard to flip Eddy Pineiro, one of the top kickers in the nation. Pineiro (6-1, 180), from North Miami Beach, is an Alabama commit. He attends ASA College Miami, where he has hit from as far as 73 yards in training sessions. He told Canesport his family is “all UM fans,” but he grew up rooting for the Crimson Tide.

Offensive Weapon Desmond Phillips to Stay Put in Miami-Dade

The University of Miami is in the midst of doing their homework and looking for a new head football coach, but that certainly hasn't had any impact on Desmond Phillips, a local star out of Miami Jackson who provided the Hurricanes with a verbal commitment on Wednesday.

By COREY BENDER, Scout

Despite currently not having a long-term solution in place for their head coaching vacancy, the Miami Hurricanes have had some recent success when it comes to replenishing their roster and filling needs in their 2016 recruiting haul.

A good handful of prospects decided to take a step back and look elsewhere, but when you live out your childhood just a short drive away from the university with the colors orange and green flashing in from nearly every direction, it's sometimes difficult to pass up the opportunity to team up with the hometown school you've always rooted for.

For Desmond Phillips, a versatile offensive weapon that constructed a stellar senior campaign under center for Miami Jackson, he made that known on Wednesday when he decided to put an end to his recruitment and commit to the local Hurricanes, sources told Scout.

The former Toledo commit is a dynamic threat at the high school level that can dissect defenses with both his arm and legs, but will shift out and make the transition to slot receiver once he kicks off his career at the U. In addition to Miami and Toledo, Phillips possesses offers from Pittsburgh, Syracuse, South Florida, Marshall, Cincinnati and Temple among others.

Phillips becomes Miami's 19th commitment in the class of 2016.

Scouting Report:
Phillips is the type of athlete that can simply make an opponent look silly with his ability to stop on a dime and slither through defenders. He flashes great awareness and escapability when operating in the pocket, and is at his best when navigating through the open field as a ball carrier. Phillips certainly has speed to burn, but he also does a good job of changing speeds to throw off defenders.

You also have to love Phillips' grit and toughness as the team's leader on the offensive side of the ball. The Florida native isn't shy when it comes to putting down his shoulder and fighting for that extra yard to give his team a crucial first down or touchdown. Phillips' sudden quickness and burst is something to take note of as well.

Phillips operates in the shotgun for his high school team, so he's somewhat used to catching the ball and utilizing his hand-eye coordination. He'll have to continue to season up all of the technical aspects of being a wide receiver, but there's no doubting his explosiveness once it's time to put the foot on the accelerator and head north for six points.

WELCOME TO THE U! #SWAG16

Miami Flips South Dade RB Jawon Hamilton from FIU ($) Miami Flips Local RB Jawon Hamilton from FIU
7:50 PM - 22 Nov 2015

Hamilton, who was previously committed to FIU before decommitting a couple of weeks ago, is a talented player who hails from the same school that produced current Canes WR Tyre Brady. Having rushed for nearly 1200 yards and 16 touchdowns as a senior, the 5'9" 190-lb. Hamilton has been a productive player at the HS level and has skills that project well for the collegiate level as well.

Obviously, without a head coach in place, this commitment seems to come at a weird time. But, it also shows that Hamilton, who has previously stated that Miami is his "dream school" and he's loved the Canes since he was little, is committed to the school and the program, not to the coach.

Hamilton is the 17th commit in the 2016 class. He joins Travis Homer at the running back position in this class.

Miami commit and Jacksonville Raines LB Michael Pinckney comes out of the tunnel with U headband.

Coach Richt is a class act. We were sitting about 20 rows up on the fifty on Raines side. Smack in the center of a contingent of citizens from the Northside of Jacksonville and to put that in perspective for those not familiar with Duval County... it like smack in the middle of Liberty City in 1980. Raines has one white kid on the team and his family was the only white spots in a sea of black people. We tell Hurlie where we were sitting and he says that they were on their way up. Well when they emerged out of the tunnel into the stadium... IMMEDIATELY people are like MARK RICHT... everyone throwing up the U and cheering.. and Richt reciprocated with his own U. He had to take at least 15 pictures before he could get up 20 rows. He took pictures with old ladies, young kids...everyone. He makes it to the seat next to Shaq with Hurlie and Ice... people continued coming up to congratulate him and welcoming him back home to Florida and never once neglecting to respond. Even one FSU fan asking how could he commit treason against FSU.. he replied with a smile on his face... I had to go back home... I don't know the connection but one of the white people in Auggie's (Raines QB and only white player) contingent was none other than Greg Nauta who quickly came up to greet coach Richt. It was obvious they knew each other. Richt set with us from the end of the 1st Qtr until Halftime and then he went down to about row 5 to sit with Mike Pinkney's mom for a stint...The whole time taking photos and shaking hands and throwing up the U... speaking of which Mike got a picked and when he got up from being tackled Mike throws up the U and the Ref throws a flag. Coach Richt stoop up and threw up the U ... and replied "I can't believe they penalized him for that... we got to fix that..." All in all it was exciting and I can't wait to see what's next...

Dec 11, official visitors... get Zach and Bethel!

Do we have all our official visits back next year or still limited on amount we can have

I believe so...

Entire athletic program
Three years of probation.

Football
No further postseason ban.
Loss of 9 total scholarships over the 2014, 2015, and 2016 seasons. The program may divide those as it chooses.
Players on unofficial visits may be provided only one complimentary ticket to one home game in both 2014 and 2015.
