You guys are knocking the speed like he’s a project who hasn’t done it and we’re projecting him.
The kid has performed at the highest level. Not some 1a north Florida comp. he’s currently doing everything you keep saying he Isn’t able to do. He can only do so much at the hs level and he’s doing it. Not sure what more you can ask for at this juncture in his career.

There are a lot of guys who are good in hs ball. It's about projecting to the next level.
 
Kid is graduating early and will get a spring under his belt. Wouldn’t be shocked if this kid is a 4 year starter and leads the team in tackles.

Not sure how many “piling on” plays you saw. Maybe a couple but let’s not pretend that was most of his tape.

Not even referring to anyone specifically in this thread but there absolutely is a certain mindset among some that would prefer an impressive SPARQ score over ANY and ALL actual game film- disirregardless if the games are high level competition. Yet these are often the same guys that clamor for us to offer every local "under the radar" kid with offers only from FAU, Akron and Bethune because they see "intangibles" in him.

As best as I recall most of late '80's LBs were not better than 4.9. Rod Carter, Randy Shannon, George Mira Jr., Tiger Clark we're not particularly fast. Recall their 40 times from the media guide. They made good decisions, were not out of position much, diagnosed plays well, etc.

Now that was 30 years ago. Game is faster now, but I trust the coaches on their evaluation. I'm sure this kid fits our scheme and philosophy very well.

Ha! That was Lamont Green coming out of HS. Guy who was always running to catch the bus. Another overrated FSU LB.

this is the important evaluation point here.

i'm always skeptical of the 40 times of high school football players who don't run track. too much of the 40 time, particularly with a bigger guy (LB, Lineman, FB) is technique dependent. Some kids are naturally fast and can get great 40 times without the track training. I just wouldn't throw shade on the kid because he's not timing 4.6 right now. There are plenty of 230 pound 4.6 40 HS LB's that couldn't touch the combination of a 4.4 shuttle and 30 inch vertical.

I like this kid a lot. IMHO, he answers the only evaluation question that matters: can he help us win?

Exactly.

Zach Thomas couldn't run a 4.7 40 if you gave him a running head start.

Dude is in the HOF.
