CB Emmanuel Karnley commits to Miami

Whatever. Let him come after me and try to convince me Lynn Kidd is good at basketball again.

(I’m just ******* around, to be clear)
Fair enough. I concede it sounds a little silly in isolation to bring up PFF, but my point was to say I at least have a rudimentary understanding of their grading, and was trying to compare what I graded vs. what they graded because there was a question of his poor grades. The point was to show a little credibility in regards to their grading and wondering how we saw things so differently.

On its own it wouldn't make much sense to bring up.

And as far as Kidd goes, I'm a data nerd and a football guy. I fully understand I'm not a basketball X/O guy and Kidd had great data. He's pretty poor as a defender and that has hurt more than expected.

Killing his confidence

To be clear to the thread, this isn't Karnley, and this was a bad rep by the CB who had no RPO or play action element and is purely in man with a blitzing LB so he has to mirror and follow inside better. Understanding what the other defenders are doing on a play call is pivotal to a defender pairing what could go wrong on a play with their actions more succinctly.

Some plays from Karnley.

This is one I talked about. He's outside leverage with a LB underneath to take the glance/slant. Defender jumps the RPO run and vacates completely. Could he be more attached? Yes. It's on that LB doing his job better though.

Attacks this one where he has no help and runs the route for him. Almost picked.

Perfect ball by QB. Ruled incomplete initially but overturned on replay. I thought it should've stayed incomplete. Good coverage with a better throw.
IMG_8212.jpeg

Near pick on a ball that LB forced QB to throw over.
IMG_8214.jpeg

The underthrown deep ball that WR came back to. Heck of a contested catch.

There are a bunch I could drop off Davis getting roasted to boundary with help, but this is just a quick one.

They had Karnley to field almost every snap, rarely with help. He's not a great tackler and can lose the ball at times. Needs to work on finishing plays a bit better, but this kid is better than you're letting on.

Even the UCF game had a lot more good than bad. His worst play in that game was the Hail Mary before half where he just didn't jump for some reason. Davis and another defender jumped too early so my hypothesis is he lost sight of the ball from them jumping too early (by too early, I mean they landed before the ball got there).

Happy to talk ball with anyone who sees it differently or has pushback. This stuff is fun for me.

I’ll say this about taking guys like this in the portal. I get it if he’s a third or fourth guy and you like his potential. He’s very raw but has good length and speed. The negative is most of the guys they’ve taken like this has been flops. Depth / rotation guys. Questionable takes. So I don’t trust this staffs evaluation and I have doubts about their development.

If I’m taking somebody in the portal I want a player I KNOW can play , has shown he’s a quality player at P4 ball. Especially at a position like cb that was so bad the previous year. Also should I mention our cb room has multiple portal guys from previous years.

Now I see taking somebody like Verse that has a very high ceiling but a low floor. A player that produced at a very high level at a much lower level. Boom or bust type . And that’s occasionally.

Most of the free agents need to be as close to a sure thing as possible . Save the risky takes for HS.
“Most of the guys” I don’t know a single recruit from highschool or the portal that they’ve taken and has above average length and speed as a developmental project. Not Savion Riley, Dyoni Hill, not Richards… the only guy would be OJ and he’s doing pretty good.

Is he a better Safety candidate than CB candidate here at UM?

Most of the guys meaning the depth pieces or rotational guys. Guys like Cook, Gore, Hill, Alderman etc. The portal should be for proven guys. Although im ok with guys like this if you actually develop them.

He’s skinny and not physical. He’s not good at tackling and that’s grading him as a cb lol. I do think he’s a better cover guy than I originally gave him credit for . I’m fine with him if he’s yiur fourth guy then develop him. He has a lot of physical talent. Nothing wrong with this is you add the WSU kid and possibly Lucas.

A lot of fans do not really understand the portal. The portal is just another level of recruiting - an extension of it. Yes, sometimes you are bringing in plug n play starters...just like in HS recruiting. But in this new era of CFB, you are filling roster spots, signing developmental talents, getting playable bodies to eat some snaps and extend the rotation, and some...SOME...are just lotto tickets you are taking a risk on and see what you can get from that player or players.

Miami has been one of the leaders in the portal since inception and we've seen the full gamut of player types.

D$ and common sense are telling you they are trying to flip the entire DB room.

If Emmanuel Karnley is one of 3 DBs we bring in and is expected to start next year...yeah, we got a problem. But bringing in Karnley, in this vacuum - to me - is bringing in a 6'3" athlete that has hundreds of P4 coverage snaps under his belt. He can play at this level, its just now up to us to develop him to that next level.

6'3" athlete (former WR) that plays corner and has started in the P4 with 3 years left? Worth the flyer all day...if he stinks, he can join Terry Roberts shiny and chrome.

btw - here is another take - to keep filling out the room with lotto tickets...Chris Wheatley-Humphrey should schedule a meeting with Mario Cristobal and Chevis Jackson (or whoever the next DB coach is on speaker phone) and ask to move to CB on Monday.

If OJFred was transferring in, you ***** wouldn't be able to stop *****ing about tHe SyRaKuZe TaPe.

The difference is most of the guys like this only had 1 yr of elligibility and were expected to be immediate contributors.

Its obvious that the staff does want him to be the 3rd or 4th CB just in this portal class alone.

This dude essentially is a HS take as he was just a RSFR who got PT last year. Do you think Karnley or Ryan Mack are more likely to be a larger contributor in 2 years?

D$ is not the problem. The problem is the staff who has brings this mediocrity. They think they are the smartest guy’s in the room and you’re not a Cane if you don’t agree with them.
We have signed 5 guys out of portal so far. How many are you saying are mediocre? Brantley, Daniels, Poyser, Blay all seem like top portal prospects to me.

I think a lot of gripes comes from how bad they’ve been in recruiting this position group. Then plenty of misses at the position in the portal. It’s obvious we need to douche that room but the question a lot of us have is “ why did we have to wait to see the abortion of cb play in season to realize this”? The next question is why are we so bad with this position ? Development on that side of the ball has been atrocious.

This class I’ve been less negative on them because they’ve been better with taking proven guys , but Karnley fits more of the large amount of flops they’ve had and there’s no denying there’s been a bunch. Not saying I feel this way about Karnley , I’m indifferent but other posters feelings. They’ve seen this movie before.

Nooooooooo. Not a great tackler and coverage is his best skill.
Great! More poor tackling DBs.

Man I miss the days of Michael Jackson and Tyrique to name a fairly recent CBs.

The poor DB evaluations, I don’t understand how they continue to be so putrid as a staff.

Brantley fits the large amount of flops with the exception that everyone on CIS likes him and views him as one of the top cbs in the portal, and he too is highly proven....

Karnley just has to be better than Hill if we get Lucas and O'connor, thats the key.
The one issue on Karnley is he’s an atrocious tackler and in today’s football you have to have a little dog in ya. You need some fight / physicality with all the bubbles and quick throws being made. There’s always blocks and one & one situations. This isn’t twenty years ago where you took away a side of the field and that was enough. The best teams tackle the best in space. Guys that can cover isn’t enough now.

I agree. At least this guy has good physical traits for his position, the other guys u mentioned didn’t really have those for their positions. I think it’s a good take if those close out on Lucas and/or the CB from WSU.
