CB Emmanuel Karnley commits to Miami

I’ll say this about taking guys like this in the portal. I get it if he’s a third or fourth guy and you like his potential. He’s very raw but has good length and speed. The negative is most of the guys they’ve taken like this has been flops. Depth / rotation guys. Questionable takes. So I don’t trust this staffs evaluation and I have doubts about their development.

If I’m taking somebody in the portal I want a player I KNOW can play , has shown he’s a quality player at P4 ball. Especially at a position like cb that was so bad the previous year. Also should I mention our cb room has multiple portal guys from previous years.

Now I see taking somebody like Verse that has a very high ceiling but a low floor. A player that produced at a very high level at a much lower level. Boom or bust type . And that’s occasionally.

Most of the free agents need to be as close to a sure thing as possible . Save the risky takes for HS.

I'm okay with the portal on the riskier takes if they have 3 or 4 years and aren't that expensive, personally.

We see the predicament we're in at RB. Trying to find a 3 or 4th string RB out of the portal. I'd assume some of our current CBs leave after the bowl? We still need two starting level guys, IMO.

D$ is not the problem. The problem is the staff who has brings this mediocrity. They think they are the smartest guy’s in the room and you’re not a Cane if you don’t agree with them.
If this guy is a highly rated player recruited by top teams, how is the Miami staff acting like "the smartest guys in the room" by taking him?

Maybe he's good, maybe he stinks, but it has nothing to do with them going against the grain.

He’s still young and has a lot of natural ability but he needs a lot of work imo. I wish I trusted the staff more to develop guys like this. I’m ok with the take if we add the WSU kid and potentially Lucas.

I don’t give two ***** if he’s good in the pros. He was a walking disaster here, and that’s all that matters. What good is DJ Ivey now to us? Maybe he’s receiving proper coaching, great. No one on this current staff is offering that.

The spin cycle is in full affect here, per usual when we take a developmental player. No one has said he’s good, they just say things like “big offers”, “potential”, “6’3’’ corner” and “DJ Ivey”

Every single clip is him getting roasted by mediocre WRs. Every PFF grade is dog *****. But sure, let’s focus on the positives.

Sunshine and rainbows.
I am betting heavy on the Broncos if he reads this

On the flip side in 2023 and 2024 we brought in 3 total OL from the portal (2022 I wash out because frankly we needed bodies)

Lee
Cohen
Carpenter

I know PFF suddenly made Carpenter an enemy of the board but no one was complaining about him this year

Point being these guys are known for OL and the guys they bring in have started every single minute they’ve been here

I don’t really remember the details of their portal recruitments but I don’t remember a bidding war and Cohen was somewhat cast off from Bama

Then you have the **** show that is CB transfers…

OL is the one spot I have full trust .

Yeah I just put it out there because we know what the good looks like

And we know what the bad looks like

Seems like we wanna pretend it’s not that simple

Your posts already summed up what I think though. We still might end up with a homerun in this CB portal when we talk about it a year from now and the staff can reverse this trend

I agree on all of that.

Seems like WR, TE, and OL are some of the only positions being developed. Maybe RB (which is one of the easier ones).

Jury still out on LB, DL, CB, S.

Looking back at my comment above...the offense is being developed, the defense isn't, lmao.

You think Lucas will play CB or S ?

There's definitely a stark contrast to the development of offensive players vs defensive players. That shows it's not a systemic lack of coaching acumen but more likely the assistants on the D not holding up their burden of responsibility.

This is my whole problem. Why are we taking this type of player from the portal? If we want high ceiling dev guys, sign them out of high school. We need contributors to play NOW. We are a turf toe and a leg away from these guys playing. We don’t have the margin for error or the track record of developing these guys to justify it. Even your boy Ivey was not developed here…he had to go to the league to become a 6th DB on the depth chart guy . Who gives af about traits if we can’t use them?

This guy does have experience. It's not like taking Earl Little off Alabama's bench. I know the staff has placed a premium on snaps played, even with players who have multiple years of eligibility.

With that said, it's fair to question our development track record with a player who is not a finished product.

We do that out of HS. They either transfer or don't work out. To the point our entire secondary needs an overhaul. Both starters and backups.

Youi're getting what you'd get out of a HS kid but with 300+ snaps of P4/5 experience.

Nothings changed. We still need 2 starting level DBs.

Would hope the emphasis was on coverage ability + speed. We have major lack of guys who can stick to WR's and possess makeup speed. The uproar seems to be because this kid has neither of those traits.

I get the pessimism with the staff. The last 20 years has harden even the most die hard fan. But Schnellenberger, Johnson, and Davis took 4 to 5 years before they really made there mark. The staff and especially, Mario must be confident in the QB room or waiting for the playoffs to end.

Next year will be the determining factor if this team is going to get back to at least 75% of what we saw in the 80's, 90's and early 2000's. If Mario takes a step back from this year then we as fans need to get used to being on the fringe of a ACC title/12th team in the playoff.

He isn't going to get fired. The donors love him. He is one of there guys. Hand picked. If he doesn't work out, then no one can (In there eyes). It's been a long time watching this kind of football. We can get to 11 wins today.

Give him the benefit of the doubt at least until next year.

I don't think I have ever asked you a question. And maybe some of the other guys can answer this. Why do we recruit more safety's than CB's? Or does it just seem like this? Every player we recruit in the secondary that has "CB" on the recruit file on Rivals or other sites, seems to be labeled a "Safety" here.
