There’s two lines of thinking regarding Miami’s defense. The first one is that they have talent in the front seven but really struggled on the back end and that a handful of portal DBs could help them make the jump back to respectability. If that’s the case, the additions they’ve already made through the portal combined with a bunch of highly ranked recruits who are ready for starting roles should get the defense back to where it needs to be. In which case, adding a great quarterback would mean they’ll win games 42-20 instead of 21-20.Would you rather try and win games 21-17 or 42-38 every week?

The other line of thinking is that Miami is bereft of talent on defense and none of the four and five star prospects they signed are good. If that’s the case, it’s going to take a lot more than a handful of portal guys to make this a good defense. They would have to replace almost everyone which is near impossible to do in a single offseason. If that’s the case, Miami’s ONLY option is to go all in on another star quarterback to try to outscore everyone again like they did in 2024.
There’s literally zero reason to not go after a great quarterback. Playing Emory Williams or Judd Anderson isn’t going to make our defense pitch shutouts every week. We’d just lose 42-17 every week instead having shootouts.
