'Canes Scouting Reports from NFL.com

So golden is a poor recruiter and coach. Not good.

You realize that the talent that sucked on defense was brought in mostly by Randy Shannon, right? You either lack perspective or aren't bright. This years seniors are the class that Al cobbled together after randy hadn't done **** in recruiting his last class.. the juniors and below, those are ALL golden though.

You realize that this talent brought in by Shannon could not be supplanted by anyone Golden brought in right? So again, either golden can recruit or he can't.

I see people harping on Shannon about being a bad recruiter yet Golden, who is supposedly some great recruiter, can't recruit guys good enough to replace these so called Shannon scrubs.

Fsu had frosh starting on its national title team. you mean to tell me Golden can't find young guys good enough to replace players who were a large part of the worse defense in school history?

Rather you realize it or not you are saying golden is a below avg recruiter.

Was FSU's defense largely freshman and sophomores? I'm guessing not... having one or two "frosh" starting on the D doesn't really detract from the upperclassmen they have elsewhere, that they've been developing for years. Freshman and sophomore Dlineman for example, don't normally come in ready to dethrone much bigger/stronger guys.. even if they have more talent then they do. All evidence points to golden being, at the very least, an above average recruiter... the fact that we weren't playing all of those young guys ahead of more mature guys, doesn't really take anything away from them.. feel free to show me a breakdown of FSU's starting defensive lineup.. i'd love to see how many of those guys were freshman and sophomores.. in fact, do that for the top 5 defenses... you'll probably notice it doesn't work how you have magically thought it up... "if he's a good recruiter, he should be able to replace the guys that aren't good in 2 seasons" that's not how the real world works.

Break a top 5 defense for what? Don't need too. They obviously didn't have their programs worst defense in school history like Miami did. Again, with these players being so bad and Shannon being scum a horrible recruiter why can't Goldens guys come in a take their positions? Let me give you some examples....if Sean Taylor isn't behind Ed Reed he starts in 2001. Same for Rolle. Same for wilfork.

The problem is Golden a recruiting has been equally as poor as his coaching. Darius Smith? What impact did he have? Cory king? What about the kid Golden bragged in the newspapers about benching 225 40 times? What impact has he had? Grimble? The kid Miami stole from temple? What's he done? Earl Moore? What's he done? Junior Alexis ? Dequan Ivery?

The same issue you had with Shannon is now being done by Golden himself.

Alot of the better Shannon guys left early which is normal in cfb these days. At that point it's up to Golden to replace these players and he's obviously failed.

I mean, it's also obvious you feel that Shannon should have left Golden a complete team. Lmao. Well he did on offense and Golden screwed that up too. Lastly, there is zero evidence that suggest Golden would be any better with a talent advantage. The reality is his history suggest it doesn't matter. He still loses games he shouldn't be losing.
at some point you're going to have to deal in facts, rather than your opinion.... the reality is that history suggests al golden can put football team together and a good defense togethe. History also suggests that it's going to take more than 2 now 3 recruiting classes to get to where we want to be..

Excellent, excellent point! Many of those guys are still in the league and having nice careers - Franklin in particular. So in addition to getting more "game changers", we've got to develop the talent that we do bring in.

So, this will make it 6 years straight without one of our players going in the first round?

That says a lot.

during those 6 years, who was the highest drafted?
Franklin and Harris, 2011
I mean, look at this list since 2009
to see the lack of high profile talent is amazing

2013 5 149 Brandon McGee CB St. Louis Rams
2013 6 189 Mike James RB Tampa Bay Buccaneers
2012 3 72 Olivier Vernon DE Miami Dolphins
2012 3 86 Sean Spence LB Pittsburgh Steelers
2012 4 97 Lamar Miller RB Miami Dolphins
2012 4 100 Travis Benjamin WR Cleveland Browns
2012 6 198 Tommy Streeter WR Baltimore Ravens
2012 6 200 Brandon Washington G Philadelphia Eagles
2011 2 46 Orlando Franklin T Denver Broncos
2011 2 60 Brandon Harris DB Houston Texans
2011 3 79 Leonard Hankerson WR Washington Redskins
2011 3 81 DeMarcus Van Dyke DB Oakland Raiders
2011 3 86 Allen Bailey DE Kansas City Chiefs
2011 4 109 Colin McCarthy LB Tennessee Titans
2011 6 181 Richard Gordon TE Oakland Raiders
2011 6 192 Matt Bosher P Atlanta Falcons
2010 3 95 Jimmy Graham TE New Orleans Saints
2010 4 102 Darryl Sharpton OLB Houston Texans
2010 4 128 Jason Fox T Detroit Lions
2010 7 235 Dedrick Epps TE San Diego Chargers
2009 6 176 Spencer Adkins LB Atlanta Falcons

The funny thing about this list is it's still better than a lot of teams we faced.

History hasn't proven anything for Golden. It's proven that he took a bad Temple team and got some wins against a bunch of other BAD teams. The offenses of the teams he played were hot garbage, and that's a fact, please go check the numbers. Guess what, he's not playing those crap teams anymore. What's worse though is he is struggling against average to below average teams. What is a fact is in the time that Golden has been here, the recruiting classes he's pulled in are far better then the scrub teams we are struggling with (including Duke, VT, WF, and UNC).

The more I'm watching this team under Golden, I'm having bigger fears than scheme and it's his ability to develop players. I'm still waiting to see any players that have gotten better since Golden got here. The closest thing you could say is Tracy Howard and he didn't improve that much, considering a lot of that improvement is just getting used to the speed of the game.

It makes me laugh when these guys keep talking about our talent, but neglect to mention the talent of the other teams. Those guys on the other team are not more talented from day 1, they are just flat out coached better,

Duke, UNC, VT, WF are starting examples. Go look at the recruiting classes we've had since Golden got here vs the recruiting classes of those teams since Golden has gotten here. We have had better recruiting classes and more recruits than most/all of these teams (including accounting for the guys who left). If our coaching was as good as the coaching for any of these 4 teams, we would not have struggled with any of them this year. This is the worst VT we've seen in a long time. The worst UNC since Butch first got there. A very well coached Duke team who took a bunch of scrubs and made them competitors (notice they don't have draftable talent either). Then there is WF who basically ran the same play over and over and we just let it happen.

Let Golden trade places with Cutcliffe or Beamer, and I'd be willing to bet this is a 10-11 win team for this season that just passed. I say 10-11, because this was a soft schedule and we should have beat VT and Duke.

If we're going to deal in facts, the scary thing about history is that Coach Golden came here with a label as someone who could lay a foundation, but was less than optimal against teams with equal or greater talent. There aren't many factual data points to disprove this yet.

I don't think it's unreasonable to be concerned and hope for some adjustments.

Oh how I love dealing in facts:

Golden has been a DC/HC for 13 seasons.

His total defenses have averaged a ranking of 68th.

He's fielded a top 30 overall defense only 2 times in 13 tries.

Over these 13 seasons, he's turned in a defensive unit ranking 80th or worse 46% of the time.

And the most jarring, reality-rattling, teeth-shattering, ******* puckering, wake up in a cold sweat at night fact of em all:

When Al Golden has taken the field against a team that went on to lose 5 or fewer games, he's lost 22 times.

He's won once.

That's the reality of the situation there. Well stated by WTH.

you're right, it's not unreasonable to be concerned.. concern is one thing, though. You read these boards and you'd think we were all set to be an 11-12 win team but Al Golden's SOOOOOOOO bad .. that we only won 9 with such a good team.. the truth is, we weren't that good, and then we lost our best player.. does that suck? yes... but let's stop pretending golden is doing less with more..

So not one player on our defense is even projected to be drafted????

Wait wait where are the following
DT Renfrow
DT Porter
DT Robinson
DE Green
DE Gilbert
LB Gaines
LB Cornelius
DB Rodgers
DB Highsmith

SCHEME SCHEME SCHEME sucks lol

So why were they playing dipsh!t? You can't tell me it was the best we had. When Butch was rebuilding he played the underclassmen knowing we were building to the future. Golden is WAY too loyal to seniority - and that makes sense... that was the Penn St way.

This dude went out of his way to thank the seniors after every loss lol
What a ***ggottt coaching staff we have.

Being better than the bad teams doesnt make you good. Golden is being found out. His excuses are just pathetic. You are judge v who you play...we are outclassed by FSU. But cloud or no cloud Golden is absolutely doing less with more...compared to Duke, VT, GT, UNC etc. The fact that he persist with No D makes the point even more clear that he has no idea what a Miami team should look like

It makes me laugh when these guys keep talking about our talent, but neglect to mention the talent of the other teams. Those guys on the other team are not more talented from day 1, they are just flat out coached better,

But we've beaten those teams. What you all need to understand is during rebuilding years teams are going to lose against teams that have seemingly less talent.
Go ask Jimbo about it when FSU lost to WF and NC State. And they really had a major talent advatange over those teams. But they lost. Obviously it wasn't the end of the world for them. Just like its not for us. So get over those losses and the notion that we had some clear talent advantage over the teams you listed.

We didnt beat duke or VT and the difference between us and FSU was they handled good teams, and beat most of the bad teams easily. Then they slipped up against a bad team here and there. That is understandable, it happens. Notice they barely lost. They did not get embarrassed and run off the field like some kind of joke.

We did not only lose to these teams, but we got dominated by these teams. We did not slip up and lose a close game that we should have won. We let scrubs put up 500+ yards. Your comparison is a poor one. We are not even close to the level FSU was when they were getting there 4 loss years.

Yea you may lose some games like that but you also have some quality wins mixed in as well. You saw it with fsu ( Clemson). You like to use Saban at mich st well he beat a pretty good mich team in year 1 while on probation. Saban also did it at bama...harbaugh at Stanford as bad as they were beat number one ranked USC. Countless examples out there. Quality wins mixed in with some let down losses seem to go hand in hand.

Golden has zero quality wins so that's where the concern is. Then you look at his career.......Zero quality wins. This guy has done nothing in his career to make you think he can put it all together.

Nites, you don't think UF was a quality win? They were healthy and more talented. Not Goldens fault that Uf had play their 3rd string Qb and lost 14 players to injuries.
UF was favored to win their division and had gone 11-2 the year before. Obviously the slew of injuries took a toll on their final results. Still doesn't take away from it being a quality win.

It makes me laugh when these guys keep talking about our talent, but neglect to mention the talent of the other teams. Those guys on the other team are not more talented from day 1, they are just flat out coached better,
which teams were those?

Golden flat out sucks going into last year i thought we would win 10-11 games no reason not too... I mean we were loaded and the excuse of losing are best player when we have no depth i mean come on we had dallas back there no reason this team should not of won 10-11 games and went to a bcs bowl game golden needs be fired asap so what we were playing under a self imposed probation that limited scholarships and were thought to possibly get the death penalty in a 2 year long bull**** that the ncaa dragged out i mean its and excuse many teama have won 10-11 games on probation and competed for national championships get rid of golden asap :crownpour:

I mean think about it we were huge huge favorites to be va tech and duke 3-4 point favs how could we possibly lose those games and the fla st game were were a 21.5 point dog and were down 7 until duke got hurt poor excuse .... This guy has got to go he has been here for 3 years and got a team on probation and limited scholarships to a 9 win season pathetic
