Why would the coaching staff go after a kid that is already committed to another school (USCw) if the only reason was to use that kid as "leverage" against Pelon and Johnson?

That makes ZERO sense

Same reason we went after Artie Burns when he was committed to Bama.
Same reason every school is going after our 24 verbally committed recruits.
Poaching is part of recruiting.
If you have qualms about poaching you shouldn't be a recruiter.

I think what Zon3 is saying is why would you go after a recruit if it isn't legit interest. Even if there is a ranking of all the players and a back-up plan player it is more then just to put pressure on somebody is it's also because they think he's good enough. We have flipped many studs before and we will continue only if he's good enough not to put pressure on others

They could have picked someone else but that is who they wanted. They hired him before the sanctions came down and that job pays north of 3.5 million per year. Someone would gladly coach at USC even with sanctions on the horizon.

They have another year of sanctions.

USC had a choice and they choose Kiffin. Perhaps they went after the wrong OC (Steve Sarkisian) in 2010. There was no evidence that Kiffin was a good HC (look at his career), USC made a bad choice. Even though they were going to get punished, if you pay an HC what you paid Kiffin (http://sports.espn.go.com/los-angeles/ncf/news/story?id=5196431) someone good is going to bite.

They had a choice and made a terrible one.

One year isn't three. This is a great job with only one class left to suffer through, the worst is over . Kiffin was just a stop gap to get through sanctions . No other coach worth their salt would've touched that situation four years ago .

You would be wrong. USC wanted Kiffin, they got him right away.

Let's look at the facts of what USC offers:

1. A ton of money, north of 3.5 million.

2. Great talent (thanks Carroll)

3. Great recruiting base

4. Tradtion and they had recent success

Even with unknown sanctions on the table, this job was attractive. The issue with Kiffin is he sucks and couldn't keep them a float. That 7-6 season, even with sanctions, was a failure. They bounced him.

They wanted *****in and got him with great alacrity. If they wanted Sark they would have got him.

with DE Naim Mustafaa leaving the Team, I think UM can now sign both JUCO NT's Cory Johnson and Micheal Wyche to add with current JUCO NT commit Dalvon Stuckley, this would allow UM to redshirt current 2014 prep commits Valentine and Jenkins along with potential future commit Anthony Moten. This way even if Wyche doesn't get his 5yr granted from the NCAA UM will still be fine talent and depth wise on the dline in 2015. When one door closes another opens.

Not exactly. Yes getting Monte is a bonus. However, Kiffin and the staffs he has assembled/been a part ofcan RECRUIT VERY WELL as far as talent/stars go. At Tennessee dude recruited at a High level. Same thing at sC even with sanctions.

This is what I said a few pages back. If Orgeron stays, Wyche is not leaving USC. Since Orgeron is the recruiting coordinator at USC, he recruited many of their current commits. It would be stupid for the AD to get rid of him this season or before signing day.
