Canes Camp 11

Every time our offense makes a good play we freak out that our D still sucks, but everytime our D makes a good play we freak out that our O is regressing. You cannot form opinions of our squad off the very limited tape we get to see.

Looking good out there... However DP looks like he has gained too much weight to me.... But its just a few plays in a highlight section..

5:15 - Gilbert beating Gadbois around the edge

5:34 - Seantrel vs AQM

5:44 - Renfrow helping to clog the middle

5:57 - Real excited about Jontavious' development. Shows his Spring Game performance was not a fluke.

6:10 - Moar Duke wheel routes this year!!

Not sure if you wrote the wrong time, but that Chickillo beating Wells

Truth. That is what I don't get about scrimmages and practice. If you have your first team O going against your first team D, what do you want to happen?

Lot of big plays followed by turnovers. 15 Yard gain followed by a sack. At the end of the day if the players are getting good reps, executing properly and staying healthy, isn't that what's important.

All the hate that Rodgers is getting because of history and clips from highlights(Jenkins got roasted by Dallas Crawford in 1-on-1s in the play right before Duke got KC, btw) is in direct conflict with what the coaches are seeing through 11 days of fall camp. You can be a starter and not have a black jersey(Perryman, Crawford, Jenkins, Armbrister/Figs currently). All the **** being talked about him here and he keeps it.

I thin KC Rodgers has been doing a way better job then Rayshawn Jenkins out there and that's why Ray is now in the green jersey and KC is still in black.

Ray Jenkins obviously has more potential but he had the opportunity to hold down the safety position in the absence of Deon Bush and he hasnt done that at all to this point.

ur crazy my friend, mr rodegers has zero ball skills

****, you're right. Saw the flash of the #1 and thought (hoped) it was Gilbert showing out already. As the play unfolds you can clearly see the #71 on the jersey. That, Chick's build and the white legs probably should have been a dead giveaway, lol. I guess the search goes on for footage of Gilbert and Kamalu..

The only time I can remember kacy not sucking is when they had him playing man at the LOS at the end of last year. He's an awful deep safety.

Also, I'm not really sure, but isn't a big factor in the black jerseys hustle and leadership, not who's necessarily making the most plays?

This. Rodgers is actually a decent NB when playing man to man. It plays to his strengths.

In this vid, the two picks by Morris weren't actually that bad, IMO. The first was a great read by Dortch to peel off his man and break on the ball - Morris threw the out a little late. The second was tipped at the line right into the belly of the LB. Certainly any pick is a bad pick, but it's not like he stared down the WR or overthrew him by 10 yards...

When was the last time someone in our secondary made a read like that?!

I don't know if we should be excited for out D or worried about Morris throwing picks. We should all get a lot more clarity after the first game, but I expected Morris to be shredding our D being that we might have a top 5 offense this year. I hope he does very well tomorrow for his confidence.

Yeah....anybody defending Rodgers doesn't have a clue.

If Rodgers starts because Jenkins is still struggling then it says more about Jenkins than it does about Rodgers. Bottom line...we spent all offseason worried about the D Line....but it looks like the safety position is our biggest question mark on defense heading into the season.

We need Bush healthy and Jenkins to step up. Otherwise we could be sporting the 2 worst safeties in the ACC in Highsmith and Rodgers.

Then you're talking directly to the coaches. Not only is he slated to start, but he keeps the black jersey, while guys that people here gives message board blow jobs to like Figs, Perryman, Crawford and Jenkins have all lost it. He along with Howard are the only ones not to have a black jersey to start camp, get one and keep it through yesterday.

Ladarius Gunter has kept his black jersey as well.... ppl like to harp on him when he gets beat but i've seen all of our DBs get beat by our receivers. He is obviously doing something good to keep his black jersey as well.
maybe the people were ripping on the board are unlucky and never get caught on film making plays...just maybe

* Standish Dobard continues to make plays in practice...kid is making it hard for them to shirt him

* I hear the talk about Pierre but my guy Jelani Hamilton is doing work..

* Nate Dortch-Jontaviuss Carter battle has been really good since spring..Nate got a pick 6..but Carter bombed him twice in the video. Carter @ that height is kinda freakish how he pulled way from 165pd Nate Dortch.

*Coley needs to get Craawfor and Duke out wide some this yr....they completely embarassed likely our starting safeties for game 1.

* Morris had a nice pocket on alot of the throws.

* dont get too too excited about the defense...keep in mind they have seen our same plays like 100 times in practice and they just can jump routes etc...we had about 10 batted balls..something i think we barely had all **** season. On one of them was a sure fire pick as Tracy Howard was all over Coley's slant route.

*What teh **** @ Figueroa behind Perryman during the interview...dude was in the middle of the field acting like..E.T. that sh*t was FUNNY.

To a limited extent maybe. But it is a great sign if our guys are able to handle their zone drops properly, carry a guy through their zone on to the next guy, recognize combo routes and realize what's coming, and be in a position to make plays and stop the offense. Whether they have more familiarity than average with the offense or not, the fact that DL aren't being driven five yards back, that LBs aren't always stuck in no man's land off of play action, and that the defense seems to be making the field a little smaller for the offense is all positive regardless of how familiar they are with them.

Obviously these are just VERY limited clips and the D is still shown getting smoked a few times, but a lot of reports have both sides competing pretty well throughout the fall

Exactly and Ray Jenkins hasnt shown any ball skills at all either this fall camp which is really surprising to me b/c that looked like the strongest part of his game late in the season last year.... now it seems like he has hit a wall or something.

I think KC has the edge over Ray sadly when it comes to the run game... Now KC Rodgers sucks as a tackler but he has atleast shown the ability to put himself in position to try and tackle the ball carrier, which is what Ray Jenkins is really lacking at this point.

Thats why i'm anxious to see if Jamal Carter can push for a starting job b/c he has the ability to make plays in the pass game, and isnt afraid to come down and knock somebody out in the run game like a bigger Deon Bush.

Agreed.....guys like Tracy Howard seem to be 100% more comfortable just from the limited amount of clips ive seen.

I think in all honesty the defense could see a 30 pt jump from where they were ranked...at least. Thats just off the strength of the defensive line...and guys comforrtability.

This defense isnt going to be anywhere near UM standards this year so dont expect that at all.... but i still expect to see a drastic difference from the lack of a defense that was on the field last year.

I think next years defensive unit if certain key players decide to come back should finally be a unit that can win games on its own and just shut down an offense... at least thats what i believe the level of expectation should be.

Easier schedule coupled with returning everyone minus McGee = huge jump in defensive rankings.

I expect us to finish around 45th in scoring defense.

He looked good covering Duke at the end of that video.

Carter surprised me with his speed. What was just as good as the speed was the way the ball stuck in his hands like glue with no bobble. Really nice stuff. I hope he doesn't get frustrated with the depth at WR because he could eventually be a big-time WR for us. When he was pulling away from Dortch, he gave me flashbacks of Mike Irving streaking down the sideline against fsu when Walsh him hit in that big comeback

I'm not sure about that, many players make huge leaps from there freshman to there sophomore year. Our defense will not have to be a shutdown defense for us to win, being that we have a great offense. I just want I defense to not be a liability to our offensive success. If that happens we can win 10+ games.
