Camp Surprise: Braxton Berrios

Tommy, until the OL and DL problems are solved, all the competition in the world at skill positions is basically for naught.

Very scary that this DL can gets sacks on this OL in scrimmages.

Actually, the competition on the DL is the best it's been in many years.

That's not saying very much.
Agreed. However, I believe we'll take a really big step forward this year. We should. For the first time in ages we have depth, talent and experience on D. If there aren't improvements, I pray changes are made.

All these weapons. Now if only Coach Coley can get them all going, should be fun to watch.

I wouldnt call him a surprise at least not for me that is. Ive had high expectations for him since i watched his film.

Did you expect him to do this well this quickly? It's not a surprise he's a good player, I think. Moreso, it's a surprise he's doing so well that he may force himself on to the field at a stacked position.

That was a pretty nasty injury so realistically it is amazing this kid is 100% this quickly. What's different about this kid is he is stronger than most upperclassman. That is incredibly unusual where most true freshman wide receivers are lucky to rep 225 pounds more than a couple of times if at all. So with this kid it is about technique and playbook. Here's another kid, like Kaaya, who seems to be in love with football.

The only issue with his size is his height. He is physically put together. Strong and explosive. Definitely further along physically than most freshman receivers.
JHall,
I think his vertical is close to 40 inches which could offset the height issue. I recall when Santana got drafted the reason he went so high at his height was because of his vertical jump.

Yup he had close to a 41" jump at one of the combines.

For a number of reasons, I'm surprised by a lot of what I've heard about Berrios during Fall camp.

#1 Coming off a knee injury, I didn't expect him to be full go.
#2 As a True Frosh with size questions, it'd be understandable for him to need some time.
#3 At one of the deepest positions on the team (3 likely NFL players and experienced guys in front), he'd have an uphill climb either way.

I can't say I've seen it live, as I don't have those privileges and therefore can't really talk about *how* he is doing what he's doing. However, 3 separate guys who get to watch a considerable amount of practice consistently mention Barrios made "this catch and move" or "found a spot in the zone" or "he catches everything" or "he's going to have to play." Some of these guys don't know each other, so don't bias their views by talking to one another. After yesterday's scrimmage, it was all but cemented that this guy, assuming health, may actually see the field this year. That'd be an incredible feat.

There isn't a lot of meaningful film to look through, as he played QB in HS a good amount, but this short clip was fun to watch:

Just a couple routes here, but my immediate takeaway was zero wasted steps at the line and tremendous burst. Looks like someone has polished up his steps. He also pretty clearly has insane quicks (think he had the best shuttle at The Opening).

I still can't imagine him getting extensive snaps. I imagine Malcolm Lewis will own the slot position when we're not throwing out the Coley/Waters/Dorsett trio. In case of injury or perhaps in mop-up, I'm really looking forward to seeing if the hype transfers to game action.

His 3.81 shuttle time was the best by any football player including NFL guys in something like a decade.

Kid is just a football player.
Ran for over 1000 yards a couple seasons in high school. Played qb. Played wr.
Probably played defense.

Just a player and a Cane.

I remember watching the Dolphins - Jets back in the day and getting so frustrated over the number of catches Wayne Chrebet would rack up against us. I think Berrios can have that type of impact. One of those guys who is just insanely hard to cover.

As a Jet fan, he was the last WR we had that I had total faith in to be open whenever we needed him to be. If Berrios can get close to that we'll be set.

All around football player. I didn't know his shuttle was THAT great. I knew it was the best one at the event, but the best going back that far, that's saying something. Kid is dedicated, and will be a fan favorite the next 3-4 years.

If this dude were black we'd be comparing him to Tavon Austin. He's better than everybody he's been compared to in this thread IMO.

He's an elite athlete and not just a "technician."

A couple guys at the NFL combine had a 3.81 but that's it.

He's basically one of the quickest football players alive on any level.
Plus, all the reports say that he catches everything.
Great hands and elite quickness is a pretty dangerous combination.

I compared him to Tavon during his recruitment, but would need to see him at this level because I watched a ****load of QB runs. The crazy part about all of this is that his specific skill set is suddenly a premium in the NFL, which really just means offenses are being formulated to feed guys like Berrios.

Austin ran a 4.01 shuttle and Berrios ran a 3.81.

Brandin Cooks tied a combine best this past year by running a 3.81.

However you slice it, Berrios has truly elite stop and start quickness.

McKenzie at Georgia is showing out also.

I wonder if we got the best player. It will be interesting to see how that pans out.

Ya'll might think im crazy but when Berrios really comes into his own in a year, it would not surprise me if Coley throws in a wildcat package just to have Braxton make magic out of nothing. This kid is gonna be that good. I have no doubts he will make an impact this year. Golden already stated that this kid would do special things on special teams. However he has been shining so much I don't think special teams is the only place we will see him this year! Madd excited about what he will bring to the table. Call me crazy but with are already talented rec'n corps, adding Berrios to the mix and we have the best receiving squad in terms of talent and upside in the ACC.

I'm sure the testing at The Opening is not as precise as the testing at The NFL Combine but like you said, either way he has elite quickness.
