Camp Report #13 (2nd scrimmage)

I don't know what you guys are watching. Maybe I need to watch again. I saw a defense that is still giving up too many plays. Yeah, we're fast and athletic and we're stickin' people but we're also getting shredded routinely by the offense.

I know, I know. Our guys on offense are really good.

I'm just being a pessimist.

Honest question but why would our defense be expected to handle our offense? Our offense should be our strength and really let us down last year at the end.

Our defense just needs to create a little bit of havoc like it was early on. We won't stop people consistently and we definitely will give up big plays.

Maybe it's pathetic we are at that point, but **** denial.

Because our offense has new QB's and a whole new right side on the offensive line. Also, our best RB's are injured and all they have is Gus, who appears to be tearing our *** up on a daily basis. Even Tucker is having minor success against our defense.

I haven't seen us get much of a pass rush this spring either.

West End zone: I'll bite since you asked fronts and coverages.

Against option and passing teams/downs:
I would kill to see us line up in an over front with (strong to weak) AQM/Chad at 9, Kamalu/Chick at 3, the best DT after fall at the 1, and McCord at the 5. They can still run cover-3 from that by rolling safeties down. Ie: roll Crawford to the WS flat, DP and Kirby have the two hook/curl, but now instead of AQM or McCord or Green in the SS flat, you'll have Figs or Grace etc there.

You could then use the same back 7 with an under front and have chick play the strong 5, your best DT the nose, Kamalu the 3, and whoever they like better of AQM and McCord at the 5.

Wouldn't have to teach any new coverages from their base, and would only have to teach the simpler to sxecute single gap run fits.

Where are you playing the Sam if you're using a 9? I assume you're referring to a 44 type over with a 6tech (head up TE) and an overhang Sam outside of him. Pretty much every over team runs it like that these days. Bud Foster comes to mind. Rolling a $ down weak with a 9 and a 50 stacked Sam might be poor alignment. Though, it might be feasible if you roll a $ strong if you're playing a heavy TE running team. I like the personnel.

Here's my take (based on the fact that we've recruited for a 34ish system):
Im with you in regard to option/passing teams or downs. I like an even front in those situations, but if there's two backs in the backfield and at least one TE (21,22,23) (and they're a power scheme team [down, kick, lead]), then I like the 50. It's nuts how unfair it is against man blocking. I also love the 50 to zone blitz. My only difference with your idea is that I would like to rotate between a 50 and an under (with quarters or cov1, I have an affinity for both). That under front also includes nickel, which is essentially the same thing, just with different personnel. Any team that wants to base their running game on any form on veer/zone blocking -- pretty much any one or three back teams -- then I want to play gap control.

The under and 50 are already very similar in alignment. There's a thread on the board that describes it well.

Personnel 50/Under
Sam /Sam Fig
ST /SDE Chick
N /N [??? best dude, lol]
Wt /3 Kamalu
Rush /WDE McCord

Mike /Mike Denzel
Will /Will [Kirby/Grace?]
S$ /S$ [Crawford/Carter??] -- I consider the S$ as part of the front

The Nickel front will vary based on situation -- pass rushers or not.

Fair enough. Its always the questions of the spring. We see the offense light up the defense, or vice versa and we can't help but wonder.....is it good or bad?

For me, I would hope the offense would be winning. We have weapons. The receivers and TEs should be a strength and Gus looks like he is coming along.

All in time though. I'm pumped for the season, but I really have no idea what to expect. I just feel like its going to be a roller coaster like I felt at this time last spring.

So glad to see safety depth. To be honest, I forgot the name Rayshawn Jenkins because I've been so impressed with Bush, Carter, and Crawford. And I agree with whoever said the offense is so scary because of the weapons we have displayed so far, and that is minus Duke and Yearby. The Williams injury stings, no way around it.

Would like to see as little of Jenkins and Antonio Crawford as possible this season tbh.

Rayshawn was alright...he has a nice skill set....hes not an enforcer hitting...but he has range and ball skills.

Crawford got picked on almost all yr....

Both of them should really have been RS Fr. I expect both to be good here. Reyshawn's a kid with a monster physical profile who hasn't quite put it all together IMO but physically theres a lot to work with. I'd like to see him maybe 5-10 pounds lighter this fall, looked a little heavy.

i thought crawford was our best DB against slot guys. He was the only one that could handle Campanaro vs Wake Forest...

Defense looked...gulp....pretty awesome. Bush and Carter destroying people.

Look at our best teams. The common theme is a devastating secondary led by a safety. Obviously we aren't there but adding a kid with the type of leadership and balls to the wall style like Crawford to a group with guys with ridiculous god given ability like Deon and Carter and suddenly our secondary looks like its ready to compete with anyone.

I agree we always had top notch defensive backs in the glory days, but the real common theme was a devastating defensive line, particularly DTs.

what is the song that is part of the final few minutes on all these highlights from last season?
