Camp Report #13 (2nd scrimmage)

Did y'all notice who was guarding Lewis on his long play down the sidelines????????

McCord. :ohlord:

WTF are you talking about? McCord had the flat not Lewis! 27 had the deep third but bit on Dorsett's route and left his zone wide open.

It's at the 6:18 mark.

To add to your comment.

We gotta chill out with this talk. The rush position is only playing the boundary flat on zone blitz and drop 8 situations. We're not the only team that does this. It's very common, even in the NFL. You guys are going to be hanging off Tyriq's nuts when he gets a pick6 off one of those calls.

Looks like McCord was playing the ROLB in that pkg. We rushed 4, but can't tell who is rushing from the right edge. Looks to big and long to be a DB. 5 was the mike with 51 lined up on the left side. Probably getting Mccord some LB work.

Very nice assessment. Makes sense. They've been talking about Tyriq being interchangeable at S and R. It's a mirrored position in our base 34 stuff.

i lol'd when a lot of guys on here had no use for us recruiting Stacy Coley. I mean guys flat out didnt want him, and im sitting there telling them the kid is likely the best wr coming out the last 5 yrs....**** we need a thread bump.....Coley is doing EXACTLY what i envisioned.......silky smooth sh*t...looks like he put on some muscle too...enjoy the next two years of him guys.

You and I have been driving this bus for years. At first I had him pegged as an Ochocinco Clone, but it appears he has another level of explosiveness to his game. He's a freak hybrid of Ochocino and Desean Jackson. I've never seen anything like it.

Picks one of those off eh.

What about the other 4000 yards we'll give up in between? We have yet to have a dropping LB/End even slow down a slot guy so the next time would be the first. At least if we did a better job of disguising it by crowding the box heavily pre-snap and THEN dropping 8. Unfortunately we don't do it that way. We give the same passive LB's with heels at 7 yards off the LOS on every ******* down.

Those of us that absolutely hate the scheme and want that clown fired aren't saying a 3-4 can't work. We're simply saying the WAY these clowns run it won't work. We don't confuse anyone before the snap because it's the same passive look on every down. Then when we blitz you can see it coming from a mile away cause those poor kids can't help but start to creep up from their deep starting positions before the snap.

I have yet to see anything in those videos that gives me any hope this D will be materially better. If we tried hard enough we could put together a nice looking highlight reel from last years team despite the fact it was historically bad. The simple fact is the way this defense is run is conducive to the opposing team sustaining drives . What makes it worse is that we manage to sprinkle in some susceptibility to the big play as well.

I'm cautiously optimistic about the offense. The talent is definitely there so that won't be an excuse this year.

Not saying the D will be top 10-20 but it will be better, it has to be. Better athletes, depth and players.

And last year guys were telling me I was crazy because I said he had Sammy Watkins type talent....smmfh

I wish I could find that thread...dammit man

Call me when Golden has to pull the first team defense off the practice field because the offense can't do isht against it. Then I will believe.

4000 yds total defense will probably place our defense in the top 10.

You might be right about needing to implement some smoke and mirrors/misdirection into our front, but that's not the only way to succeed. Showing the same look every play is a viable strategy. Our defense in our heyday was not as aggressive as some might think. We showed the same front, and the same 2-high shell (usually playing quarters coverage) on almost every play. You almost need to show the same look every play if you're going to base out of a 34. The beauty of it is that it's mirrored. All you need to do is roll the $'s one direction and you are overloading a side. I just don't think the 34 lends itself to being amorphous. Also, no one plays their ILB's with their heels at 7.

**as a disclaimer (since everyone likes to assume things here if they're not directly addressed): I was not a fan of what we were doing last year either concerning the R walking out to slot receivers, but I was able to have enough vision to see where they were going with it, provided that we had better personnel in the future. I just think Tyriq playing in that situation is A LOT different than Shayon.**

In regard to you next comments, I disagree with how you feel or what you see. That defense teaser video that was posted a few days ago was very underwhelming. Almost sad. I think most people would agree that we look different this spring. It's just an opinion. I'm a firm believer that tackling and running to the ball are at least equally important as sound scheme and philosophy. We look a lot more energetic and active. It also seems like we have some more depth, which was a huge concern last year.

People don't understand the importance of depth, especially in college. The great college programs have depth all across their roster. We had great depth in our heyday. If Ed Reed went down, who was next? A freshman Sean Taylor? If Sean T went down, who was next? Brandon Meriweather? We're nowhere close to where we need to be, but it's getting better. We had 1 serviceable safety last year in Rayshawn Jenkins. Have we noticed his absence this spring with the emergence of Carter and Crawford, and a finally health Bush?

I might take some more heat for this, but I'm a believer in scoring defense, and I think most great defenses are centered around that idea. Fan don't like, but it pays off. The most important thing are the points on the scoreboard. We have been way too porous, I agree. But there is nothing wrong with that philosophy. I just don't think that we were good enough last year to stop anyone.

Everyone wants us to turn it around overnight. It's never been that way at Miami.

I was referring to the close to 4000 yards we gave up DOWN THE STRETCH.

Sorry brother...we'll agree to disagree to the fullest extent two people can disagree. I've seen enough of that scheme to know that if we keep running it the same way...it will keep getting torched.

There is absolutely positively no excuse this year. There's is enough individual talent for that defense to not be historically bad. When it's historically bad again....I'm sure another excuse will arise.

I pray I'm wrong. I'll be the first to come on here and eat crow with a fork and knife. However I'm pretty ******* positive that the issue here isn't talent...it's the way that talent is being deployed.

Gotta agree, unfortunately, until I see something that makes me believe otherwise, other than orange and green blood.

I've been pretty firm in passrush+secondary=chaos and turnovers. How much we will see remains in question, but I think we will see some flashes. We've got some horses. The scheme.....well **** it, I dont even want to talk about it anymore.

We just need the offense to be more consistent as well.

Jedi/Jhall, tell me what defensive talent we have sent to the NFL since 2011? I'm having a tough time finding one active player.

What have your experiences been with your respective defensive philosophies or scheme, Jedi and Jhall? I'm not sure what "passrush+secondary" means. What fronts would you like to see? What coverages would you like to see behind those fronts? What varieties would you like to see in the blitz game? What coverages would you like to see behind those blitz packages? On what downs would you like to see what?

What about your team goals? Would you rather focus on minimizing yards or points? Is stopping the run your number one priority?

I did a little research to back my argument with some more facts. Scoring defense wins.

Bama has succeeded by doing many of those things that you don't agree with. All I'm trying to say is that there are many ways to win. Every year a different team with a different style seems to win it all.

Man, seeing Malcom hauling *** like that was a joy to see. Those corner throws by Olsen were matched by the incredibly focused catches in zero space left, and Olsen's looking for an open man vs staring down his primary. Encouraging stuff!

Defense looked...gulp....pretty awesome. Bush and Carter destroying people.

Look at our best teams. The common theme is a devastating secondary led by a safety. Obviously we aren't there but adding a kid with the type of leadership and balls to the wall style like Crawford to a group with guys with ridiculous god given ability like Deon and Carter and suddenly our secondary looks like its ready to compete with anyone.

My thing is Kiy was hollerin snatchin spots and hasn't stepped foot on campus yet. What happens when he gets there? he shirts?

West End zone: I'll bite since you asked fronts and coverages.

Against option and passing teams/downs:
I would kill to see us line up in an over front with (strong to weak) AQM/Chad at 9, Kamalu/Chick at 3, the best DT after fall at the 1, and McCord at the 5. They can still run cover-3 from that by rolling safeties down. Ie: roll Crawford to the WS flat, DP and Kirby have the two hook/curl, but now instead of AQM or McCord or Green in the SS flat, you'll have Figs or Grace etc there.

You could then use the same back 7 with an under front and have chick play the strong 5, your best DT the nose, Kamalu the 3, and whoever they like better of AQM and McCord at the 5.

Wouldn't have to teach any new coverages from their base, and would only have to teach the simpler to sxecute single gap run fits.
