Camp Report #13 (2nd scrimmage)

The one wear Deon blew up dobard and when Kirby batted a ball is all Williams plus he got sacked

And Olsen was sacked too, and had a horrible throw at the 1:32 mark that should have been picked. Both guys are making good and bad plays. You sure couldn't name a starter based on the silly practice highlight clips. Nobody is hating on Olsen. He has more raw talent, and I think almost everybody (including myself) hopes Olsen wins the job. Many of us just aren't ready to hand it to him without him earning it. The competition between the two players is a very good thing, and I'm glad to see Olsen stepping it up this spring. He has that IT factor.

kirby is a beast, he should have played more last year

stacy is just stacy, will be a first rounder IMO

good to see gus in the vid put his pads down

Olsens pick in the endzone is the throw that i was talking about, you saw stacy make a great play on one and then say tracy pick the other, those are the throws that olsen takes chances on

love that all so great commentary on the plays of the game (sarcasm)

Kirby looked lost last year. Looks great now after experience with the gameplan or should I say....,the scheme.

That Olsen throw was just a bad throw. Can't call it anything else but what it was. Good to see Tracy make the pick and capitalize on a mistake.
That other throw by Olsen in the back of the end zone was spectacular. Artie couldn't cover Coley better and Olsen dropped it in there in the only way to guarantee either a reception or an incompletion.
Perfect throw and catch.

Welcome back, Deon and Malcolm.

Very exciting video. Tyriq McCord is quietly developing the rest of his game. Encouraging stuff.

encouraging to see the energy on defense too. Figs the vocal leader, Carter, Bush, Mccord and AQM bringing the rukus.... But, those CBs look like they're getting abused a lil bit. I know our WR group is special, but ****...

And i can see us having the best WR/RB duo in the nation too. Any pair better than Coley & Duke?

Burns got toasted on that long td, and then didn't chase Coley.
Coley must have incredible long speed if a kid who is one of the fastest hurdlers in America doesn't even try to chase him down.

Coley's gonna Coley. :D

I said a route miscommunication no he needs to fight for the ball better but ok and still yet dont get your players killed sometimes you have to take chances to open up thr defense

Get your players killed? Dobard took almost two full strides before he got hit. Getting hit hard doesn't mean it was the QB's fault. Its part of going over the middle. That is why some guys don't do it.

Exactly. That throw by Williams was just fine. Actually a very good throw over the middle. We need those plays. Dobard just needs to hang on to the ball. And Bush is looking like the 2012 Bush.

Defense looked...gulp....pretty awesome. Bush and Carter destroying people.

Look at our best teams. The common theme is a devastating secondary led by a safety. Obviously we aren't there but adding a kid with the type of leadership and balls to the wall style like Crawford to a group with guys with ridiculous god given ability like Deon and Carter and suddenly our secondary looks like its ready to compete with anyone.

Need to nickname Crawford Pop-pop. Double meaning. He's popping people out there, and he looks like he's 50 years old in the interview. Moving him to safety looks like a good decision in the early going.

I thought you meant this guy

Dallas has to be one of my all time favorite canes players. I really hope he has a good year and has someone take a chance on him in the draft or free agency. Definition of team player. The kid has a genuine love for the U and football.

Regardless of what happens he seems like a smart kid that could find a role on the staff further down the road. I would love nothing more than to have him around the program 24/7. Golden loves to keep players like that around I hope we see that more often.

Looks like I'm not the only one that walks away from this report thinking that we are on the right track. Coley is Sammy Watkins this year and before the year is over he is going to be a regular subject along with Duke and hopefully others. Our defense may not be top five yet but they aren't going to be at the bottom of div 1. Like they have been. I hope Williams holds the spot ant let Olsen and Kaaya battle it out next year.

I think I can see what Golden is thinking. Our defense lacked any sort of spark last year in the 2nd half of the season. No more ooohs and aaaahs from McCord. No consistent turnovers. We just slowly wilted backwards.

Take a kid with the hunger and desire, and skill, like Crawford and get him in there and watch it spread through the defense. I love it.

Just glad Golden got here in time to recruit him. It would have been another guy we passed on that would have haunted us.
They slowly wilted because the scheme had them on their heels and allowed teams to do what they wanted against us.

When the D-line pops straight up and looks to control the man in front of him rather than getting up field THAT sets the tone. You have to have a **** ton of talent in the back 7 to overcome that nonsense.

Is it me or does Dobard look too big? Think he needs to be in that 245-250 range to be fully effective, not 260+ like Walford.

Malcolm Lewis looking like Travis Benjamin out there

The defense looks.....................................fast?

I agree with much of your post. I do think Olsen is really gonna be good. I just want a fair competition for the spot. If it is Williams so be it. Most of all I want two Qb's ready to play that can lead us to wins with no excuses. If Williams is the starter he better be leading us down the field, too many weapons not to succeed. If he is struggling quick hook and Olsen your in. I think more pressure and higher expectations from coaches is important this year. Team needs to see that our depth situation albeit not totally there is much improved. Lack of production and performance means next guy in. I don't give a **** if its Perryman, Duke(doubtful) or whoever. The Morris thing last year made me sick. Nobody better be comfortable with their job!(maybe Coley n Duke) I really think there are some promising signs going on. Go Canes!!

I've been big on Kirby since we were recruiting him (well most of us have been I guess) but he flat out looked lost last year when he played. His explosiveness was overshadowed by his uncertainty......a trait we've seen with many of our guys actually.

That seems to be gone. He is not overthinking and seems to be letting it fly. Exciting stuff.

I'm not going to get into yet another "scheme" debate.

What is 100% certain is our front 7 wore down as the year went along. Blame it on weight gain, blame it on time of possession, blame it on whatever you want, but it happened. When it did we started getting gashed more, lacked any sort of pressure, forced barely any TO's, basically went back to what we watched the year before all season.

Now the question is, will the D hold up this year? The front line has some positive signs and many question marks. If they are able to hold up, scheme or no scheme, we will have a chance to win most of our games. Just my opinion but there's enough there, just have zero idea whether we get what we need from it.

Offense looks like it should be very good this year. We seem to have a couple QBs, and Kaaya is still in route. Stacy could not be covered last year and he has gotten better. With him and Dorsett's speed, we will have a lot of deep drops in secondary. Slots, TEs and RBs out of backfield should have a field day in middle of field. If Coles is even half-a.. OC this year, the O will roll. As long as Golden does not get stuck on one QB no matter what again!

Defense has a lot more talent. If we stink again, coaching heads have to roll. That is my worry about scrimmage -- we are up against our own coaches not the guys who embarrassed the crap out of us last years. I love these kids; staff needs to be worthy of them this year! Still, have to get a little excited about what we are seeing.

Can't.

Stop.

Watching.

Coley.

He's that dude on this roster that would have even shined on our 2001 team.
