The 3-4 and the 4-3 under are easy to switch back and forth between based on personnel

Ghost2 made a comment comparing our defensive "style" to San Francisco. He's actually pretty dead nuts I think. People assume SF plays this ridiculous aggressive defense but they don't. They just have incredible personnel. Their scheme actually is a bit passive at times but they have it down to a science.

My favorite part of Gilbert's interview. Conversation begins @ min 1:36 (I'm assuming the female is Susan Miller)
(Reporter)..."What percentage would say your foot is at...?"
(Gilbert)..."I wouldn't put a number on it but it's coming along."
More talk about his about foot...
@ min 1:52
(Susan)..."When did you have surgery on your foot?"
(Gilbert)..."In March..."
(Susan)..."What did they repair?"
(Gilbert)..."Planar Plate."
(Susan)..."What is that, like a ligament?"
(Gilbert)..."Yeah, a ruptured and torn ligament..."
(Susan)..."In your foot?"
In my foot? No in my groin, of course my foot you idiot. We've been talking about my foot for the last minute.
It would make my summer to watch some just smack the **** out her the next time she asks a stupid question.

Most people who've spent a lot of years in locker rooms, barracks or crowded highways use curse words quite liberally.Golden making them run, sounds like he's not very happy with the scrimmage.
Could be he was happy but doesn't want the team to become complacent. Also, after a day off it signals back to work time.
Yeah, cause coaches drop f bombs when theyre secretly happy...
Believe it or not, happens all the time.
"Honey, that fuucking dinner was the Shiit! It was fuuckin great!"
"Hey motherfuucker, move that piece of Shiit over to the fuucking slow lane, you dumb asss ****sucker!"
Those phrases sound familiar to anyone?
Susan's a moron. Strange that a veteran reporter hasn't learned to think before she speaks.
Lucky for her she still has her looks.

San Fran and Seattle both play a read and react defense.
Carrol in Seattle has been using it even before USC.
I read an article recently on the best defense to use against read option and spread offenses, and it was a 4-3 under or 3-4 under.
Everything depends upon assignments and smarts.
Might be why we were miserable last year.

Al not happy this AM...Gassers being run...F Bombs being dropped...

Yeah this defensive scheme can only work with a veteran defensive unit from top to bottom.... thats why i still expect wholes and i still expect the defense to look real bad at times b/c the secondary is so young.

I think it requires being stout up front, which we now are.
Also requires players to know and respect their assignments. When a front 7 player freelances it screws up your gap control and big holes are created.
We had a senior safety in VT last year and he looked like he committed 2 mental errors for every tackle.
Young, old, who cares as long as they play smart.
Gambling for int's knowing you have help to prevent a 70 yard td is fine with me. Not being close to an int and having the deep help looking at the cheerleaders, that's not going to fly.
All that said, we are going to be much better on defense, and our offense is going to light people up.

Agree 100%

I still think the 3-4 is one of their "multiple" packages.
If they were to go to it full time, you'd have a DL of Pierre, Porter, and Luther.

They can play the SDE or 3-technique DT positions.
