Camp Notes Day #3

Armbrister is that dude I've got my eye on this year to come out the woodwerks. He has been quiet but Golden has himself an eye for linebackers and Armbrister is a guy he always praises.

I think you and I are the only ones. I didn't think he was that bad last year considering it was his 1st year at LB and he was about 215LBs. I hoping he can grab hold of that 5th LB spot and be a solid contributor.

Armbrister just needs to learn the position. Pretty sure he was a safety in high school and as a freshman. The athleticism is there.

I'm so happy, that I don't have to try to enable closed captions whenever our coach gives an interview or speaks.

Hey I guess that's all that matters to some people

It's not the fact the guy speaks well (though that's certainly a positive); it's the substance of what he's saying. When there is logic and detail behind his statements, it gives me confidence we're headed in the right direction. His very reasoned approach to strength and conditioning, for example, starkly contrasts the previous regime's inability to communicate anything coherent in that regard. And when I see the tangible results of what the coach has so eloquently expressed over the last two years, it's evidence that he knows how to implement his theories in a successful manner. I don't think anyone disagrees that in the end, the Don will be judged by wins and losses. But we're fans, not stockholders. Part of that experience is being optimistic and hopeful. For the first time in over a decade, this guy has given us legitimate reasons to be hopeful.

I know when to quit. But when people go on and on about how well Golden speaks I feel compelled to interject and restore some of the balance.

balance of?

??

My entire point this offseason has centered around people putting AG on a pedestal for things like his speaking ability and marketing prowess. Those things are great, but there's only so much of that I can handle. I'm awaiting placing a crown on his head (at the risk of messing up his hair) until these things begin translating into success on the field, which I fully expect to happen.

Remember the guy Golden replaced? With a head coach you expect him to know football, be a motivator, a teacher, sometimes a father.
Some things you just take for granted, like the coach's ability to speak English properly. They don't have to be speech coaches or professors, just have the ability to represent the team and the university in a positive light.

I loved Shannon as a player and as a DC but as a communicator he was a disaster. As the face of the team he made me cringe every time he opened his mouth. That mystified look he always seemed to have during a game was simply embarrassing. Then we learned he burned **** near every recruiting bridge in South Florida except the few with his homies.

We laud Golden, not because he is a good public speaker and represents us well, but because he is the anti Shannon.
The pall that Shannon cast over the program was too encompassing and destructive to even talk about.
Suffice it to say that when we start August with a team as physically impressive, talented and experienced as this one, and die hard fans like the ones on this site are saying, "a good season would be 9 wins, the Coastal and hopefully a decent bowl game," then the Shadow of Shannon still haunts us.
I'm over the dark days. A successful season is contending for the national championship.
A really good season is being in the big game.
A great season is winning the trophy.

I like Armbrister and have tried to defend him on here. I saw enough from him that I think he can grow into a reliable rotation guy and special teamer, which is respectable considering the circumstances under which he came in. Probably never a starter but certainly not a roster filler either.

Are Renfro, Gilbert, Derosier, Kamalu, Suttles actually coming?

They're just extra sets of eyes.

I still don't believe Derosier is a real person.

He was there. The Beast took a photo. This time he kept his mouth shut and didn't speculate on who he was. Probably because he didn't do any research to try to find out.

Looks like he just smelled a fart.

Can't hate on that.

But, I can hate on you not being able to "handle" the excess of it by trolling hard and hating on those that enjoy it. If you fully expect it to manifest on the field, then what's the problem (so long as it does)? It takes a lot to turn the tide on the public perception that surrounds Miami currently.

I'm okay with you hating on my mechanism for getting my point across as I'm not here to make friends. And I do agree that it's taken a Herculean effort on the part of Golden to get people thinking positively about Miami and I've never shied away from giving him credit for that.

So you agree that a Herculean effort is required, you've never shied away from giving him credit for this effort, yet your entire "point this offseason" has been to demean and counter its tangible results (i.e. excitement and positive momentum built through his marketing, interviews, etc.)?

You might have to rethink that one

Until these "tangible results" like excitement and positive momentum are accompanied by sustained success on the field then I'll be here to remind everyone that AG still has plenty to prove.

Stop, please.

For you, man. I'll stop for you.

Thank you. I can tell you're incredibly bored this morning. Perhaps visit: WestEndZone.com.

Don't send that sumbich over there - that's where I'm headed next.

LOL as if you're operating from some enlightened position. As if everyone isn't fully aware of that.

Newsflash: people like to enjoy their hobbies. Following the canes, talking canes, getting excited about positives is all part of most people's hobby when it comes to following the canes. It seems like you're hobby is trying to feel enlightened and smart by taking the cool contrarian skeptic perspective.

But you're very inconsistent and 2-sided when questioned on this. You state you fully expect the success to manifest this season, yet you feel a need to remind everyone it hasn't happened yet? You yourself expect it to happen, but you want to get on others for doing the same?

I get it. You're a humanitarian. You want to protect people from the possibility of disappointment. What a noble task.

Man I hate it when a good thread goes wrong...

I went from getting excited and looking at all the great info that was provided

Not that it means anything, but I respect your opinion.
You are just not a "half full" kind of guy.

You do seem to forget what Golden has had to overcome in less than 3 years. The investigation and 3 year limbo, not to mention every talking head spouting the word "death penalty" at every opportunity, are obvious obstacles that would have made 99% of coaches look for greener pastures.
I think about things like Alonzo Highsmith saying that our program was a joke to NFL scouts during the years before Golden. How Golden inherited a program that had alienated the vast majority of high school coaches in the most fertile recruiting area in the country.
How about inheriting a team that was subpar physically, mentally and undisciplined led by upperclassmen who seemed to only care about draft stock.

Butch had a much easier time and we praise him.

First off, it's all bout the U. Secondably, not everyone is fully aware that Golden might not be the guy. You know this. For some, all the evidence they need is that he's much more capable than Randy ever was, and this gives them hope. I can appreciate that people enjoy talking some Canes football, but I don't take kindly to being bludgeoned over the head by homerism when trying to do so. My hand has been forced here. There have been red flags since AG took over to go along with what he's accomplished off the field. I'm as hopeful as anyone that we'll begin to see this team enjoy success again, and I do expect us to be a whole lot better this year, and when we see this happen I'll be here with the rest of you praising AG for every little thing that he does or says or tweets or wears or believes in.

Al Golden would probably agree with you.
