Butch Davis and Al Golden

Dam, I thought this was a Butch for DC thread. Butch coming in as DC and Asst. HC would do wonders, IMO. Between Al, Coley, Butch, Barrow, and Hurlie, that would be a **** of a recruiting team.

There's a lot more to Butch's story than what you think. UM ****ed up Butch's contract, and he left.

Just to let you know I could give a **** about the nfl teams your claiming there's no draft and players aren't supposed to be paid they're men these are kids that's like saying Schiano can't coach but most think he's the only thing that made rutgers relevant it's different personalities and desires but that's just from a dumb posters view

Except generalizations are what get this admin into bad sitatuions.

Al Golden never coached in the NFL. He never coordinated in the NFL. He never won a SB as a coordinator in the NFL.

Al Golden never coached on a National Championship staff. Al Golden's mentor, the man he learned how to run a program, was a failure at UVA and a failure at GT as DC.

Butch did coach in the NFL. He did win a Super Bowl as a coordinator. His mentor is in the college and pro hall of fame.

Al golden is NOTHING like Butch.

Al is 20 years younger than Butch. Give him some time, mane! Al has plenty of time to put tons of players in the NFL, yet fail to win any championships with that talent...

So?? Doesn't mean he's a great HC. Butch was a HC for around ten years between his stints in the NFL, at UM, and at UNC. Did he ever even win his Conference title as a HC?

But he had a great pedigree. So when the team was struggling during sanctions it was reasonable to think that he was still great football man.

But when Al Golden, a guy with a mediocre resume/pedigree is get *** raped in year 3 by Duke, there is nothing in his background that gives you confidence that he actually is a good football man.

There was every bit as much push against Butch coming off the 1998 & 1999 seasons as there was against Al prior to this weekends flirtations with PSU. I'm not saying that Al is as good as Butch. His story isn't completely written. All I was doing is pointing out the irony and that is appropriate. Butch has never won anything as a head coach except the Sugar Bowl in 1999. Outside of that he never won his league and only won lower level bowl games. Not exactly a superb record. And I was one of the ones who was excited at the prospect that he might be back. I just HOPE they actually make some changes in their approach in Coral Gables this offseason. If not at least we will have full cupboards of talent for the next guy.

So, who here thinks Butch will make the short list for Penn State or Louisville? They'd be crazy to overlook him, right?

I remember he built the greatest college football team of all time at Miami and made UNC a very respectable program with more NFL talent than Miami during that era.
 
Don't dispute Butch's place in Miami history, but can't live in the past or dismiss his warts. So wonder why Butch can't sniff any of the better jobs that have come open . . . Texas, Penn State, Wake Forest, Louisville, Washington, USC?

Why do people keep saying Butch was a great recruiter? He wasn't and he certainly wasn't a great closer. He was a GREAT talent evaluator. Big difference.

I was just looking at the Penn State board. They're throwing a bunch of names out as possible candidates, including Ball State's coach, George O'Leary, and even Tressel. One name that isn't even mentioned, however, is Butch. Why is that?

Just the best eye for football talent college football has seen and a pretty good judge of coaching talent as well.
