BREAKING: Coach Larranaga to step down as head coach of Canes Hoops

View as article
Bring in Shaheen Holloway from Seton Hall, he got St Peters to the Elite 8 and won the NIT with Seton Hall last year with practically no NIL money. This year he has complete crap and is keeping his team competitive.

NO Caputo, no successful track record, mediocre in game coach.

Give me Memnon over Caputo.

Last point is the most important. Football has been mid for so long. Someone mentioned Alabama, who had a terrible basketball game while dominating football, then they moved on to fix basketball.

Fix football and then move to basketball if that is what you want to do. Prove we can do one before we attempt both.
I agree that you continue to fix football but I just don’t believe it’ll take that much to get bball program back where it was. I feel like Coach L stayed maybe a year or two longer than he should. His evaluations of late were the issue not necessarily the falloff of the program as a whole.

We get a good coach, we back in the thick of things again. Hiring Coach L even proved that.

That’s fine and I respect that. But he is the first choice of some of the people who will be involved in making the decision AND knowing what his contributions actually were during his time here, I think they’re right.

Our roster construction fell apart after his departure (Omier and Pack were key but complimentary players on the F4 team).

Coincidence?

And Caputo is proving it with how he’s building back the GW program… they’re still 1-2 years away but they are on the trajectory to be a top team in the A10 (Caputo inherited a mess of a program there when he arrived).
Yes, Caputo has a key to Jim's success. Most certainly in recruiting, too. But he has to start winning games in the A10 at a higher rate. He won 10 games in the A10 his first year. He only won 4 A10 games last year. I realize GWU is a tough place. They just don't have the NIL so he it is a longer build, but if you are not competitive in your mid-tier conference then you have to take pause.

Alabama tried to be relevant in basketball well before it actually hit. They didn’t wait until Saban had them fully rolling. Gottfried wasn’t cheap. Anthony Grant was a hot name when they hired him. Avery Johnson was an attempt at a splash move. Didn’t fully work until bringing in Oats, but they didn’t fix football and then move to basketball. They just sucked at it lol

Cincinnati coach Wes Miller.

Totally reasonable post but as you said they had ZERO financial infrastructure (Caputo is actually building it himself) and as a result last years roster was thin and injuries were a major problem.

Even with a weaker schedule 11-2 out of the gate is a good start to this year (they let one slip away and competed with a vastly more talented Kansas State team).

Coach L deserved a better ending. The Elite 8 and Final Four teams were so much fun to watch. Add him to the list of greats that aren't built for this era of free agency.

I'll say I was against Caputo when there was talk of L stepping down a few years ago because of the stigma of us always hiring first time coaches with connections to the university. I'll also say he's on the road to proving himself at GW this year.

Considering FSU's coach is our old coach, I don't think their opinion counts.

Fair, And **** FSU, but you know the point I’m making. I want a smart net looking at coaches that would be top choice at programs across the board - not a specific narrow minded “Miami” search.

Fixing football won't be about diverting NIL resources. People have rightly pointed out that Alabama was trying to do both at the same time. Alabama whiffed on coaches in both then hired Saban and now Oats. That fixes your programs. The right hires. NIL aint saving Mario or Miami football. That's up to him.

Yes, and Chris was important at Mason, too. But he has to have a breakout year or in my opinion is the risk is too great. I'd rather go with a guy who has won his conference multiple times at a mid-major or has demonstrated he wins at wherever he has been.
