Assessing this recruiting class

To be honest, I don't think it's fair to say "it was the right decision" until we actually land top portal players that drastically change things. That can only be said looking backwards. Our Dline was supposed to be dominant but turned out to be average (not arguing whether it was due to scheme or players).

You know as well as anybody this is a results business. We **** on Fspoo for this strategy which failed miserably for them. Kiffen executed a similar strategy going all in on the portal and is on the sidelines of the CFB as well.

I do not agree with forgoing HS recruiting in favor of 1 year rentals. We've been saying it for the past 2 years. You need to be able to do both in order to succeed.
Was our DL expected to be dominant? There was excitement about Bain and Baron but lots of concern about DT and Barrow was a nice surprise but Messidor was out of position and should have been at edge the while time. Moten came on late. Bain missed multiple games and so did Alston who was our #1 backup.

Great write up D$. Curious what you mean about Nickel. You say he can drops balls in a bucket. But then you say the tools aren't special. Those two statements seem to contradict.
Not necessarily. Plenty of guys who aren't 6'5" and have rocket arms and run 4.5s who are still very productive QBs. That's what he means by tools.

You’re joking right? Yes. There was a ton of hype regarding the dline from the moment we got Barrow until 3-4 games into the season.

Agreed. I think this year's defensive woes are similar to Mario's 1st year here hiring "brand name" coaches that obviously didn't get along with the players or the other coaches.

Who did Guidry pick to be part of his defensive staff? I don't think he was given carte blanch to pick his own staff but who knows. If Mario is a true CEO type coach, he should hire a good DC that he trusts to pick his staff.
I bet he picked the DB coach

No issue with the strategy. However, I don’t trust Mario to be quick enough, nor identify the proper talent(especially on the defense/WR) to get us major impact guys. Not to mention convincing players wanting to play for this defensive staff if it remains in tact
Bruh, what are you talking about? We had the #1 DL class last year. Bro, do some research before you just spew garbage out here.

And....most of the impact transfers improved their stock from their previous years and programs.

Cam Ward - from a practice squad no draftable QB in '23 to Heisman Finalist, ACC POTY, no question a 1st round dp
Carpenter - from mid performance to top 3 centers in the country - Day 2 draftee
Martinez - improved YPC immensely and saved his body from overuse to project nicely as a top round pick
Barrow - improved to earn 2nd Team ACC and clearly improved his draft stock from previous program
Powell - solid year despite the mess our defensive scheme was. Definitely improved his body and draft stock here
Bell - from JUCO guy to starting LT now projected as a 1st round pick
Alston - upgraded his stock here after Marshall...proved he can compete at P4. Shame he was injured most of the season

Noone hits on all of the transfers. But, to say people Mario is not "identifying proper talent" is just stupid. Pure stupidity. You are one of those last to get picked at P.E. kickball types.

If you want to use blue chip ratio to spin the overall quality of the 2025 class, that’s fine. I do believe in quality over quantity.

But then don’t call last year’s class elite because there’s a 4 next to it, considering we finished outside the top 10 in 2024 blue chip ratio. You can’t have it both ways, pick one.

people on here tend to grade classes based on top end of the class, instead of holistically. See Blount & scott in a position of need. The OL the year before.

Without those big names, a class will be a disappointment for many. Our average recruit ranking has been @ 91-92 the last three years. This one just didn't have the big names. A pickett, hanks, alford, etc. would have changed most people's opinion.

A solid class nonetheless. Not great, not bad. Big holes in the secondary though.

It is a little exhausting seeing us like 2 bad bounces away from an undefeated season and people acting like we just went 7-6 and acting like the #15 recruiting class is the #60 recruiting class or something, but people have PTSD, and I get it. But you know, maybe buck up a little.
Exactly my sentiment. We've been dog **** for years and remember when we would be happy with 8 win seasons. We have a banner year with 10 wins and exciting gamedays and cucks on here think the program is in shambles and the staff can't "identify talent." Cuck level within the fanbase is next level. People need to man up.

In the portal defensively as I stated:

Richards
Cook
Clark
Alderman
Hill
Riley
Cloyd
Campbel
Deen
Roberts
D. Brown
Shelton

WR
Brown
Harrell

More Jags than the team in Jacksonville. But if you like it, more power to you! Didn’t even include 2022

Yeah, they really haven’t shown great talent eval and development skills. Better in some areas than others. People on here who were ripping Manny with the same record rip people for ripping Mario for the same things. Cuck level within the fanbase really is next level.

K thx.

bell? where is he projected as a first round pick?

Who was excited about 8 win seasons? Maybe YOU were, but I wasn’t. Majority of this board probably was so maybe that’s the issue now. I’ve said it a million times, this board wouldn’t know what a legitimate program and legitimate coaching looks like if it hit them in the ******* face. Ya’ll are so accustomed to an absolute dog **** product that we go slightly above that and everything is fine. No, it’s still dog ****, it’s just been cooked a little.

i think the elephant in the room is the fact that we arent P2
so it will be a forever uphill battle getting elite players that we want
the only way that changes is to show recruits even if we arent P2 we can make the CFP and compete
mario had a great opportunity to do that this year
but the weekend before ENSD we lay an egg on national TV
and the day before ENSD ESPN nuts on our face by putting in a 3 loss bama over us
we look beta as fck right now as a team and conferance
the ACC is a beta conf
they needed to do whatever needed to be done to get MIAMI in and a second team as an at large
its only going to get worse
this year the precedent will be set that a 3 loss SEC team is better than any other 2 loss team outside SEC/Big10
this will effectively ensure that both conf take 8/12 spots yearly

For a guy who brings zero to the table from an X&O standpoint, this class is a disaster. It isn't just volume, it is (last i checked) 12th in average. Not going to cut it, and not even close. He is the wrong guy for the job if he cannot secure top 5 talent annually.

STFU soy boy

Anybody who's been a Cane fan for more than a minute was never happy with 8 wins
