As to what may come as a shock to many, AJ Highsmith retires

from football. Per the Miami Herald.

The 49'ers must have told him to try the rodeo clown business. This guy was the worst safety in the conference and he decided to give the NFL a shot. It's more than laughable.

You played how many downs on the University of Miami football team? Kid is second generation Cane and daddy helped win us the first NC. Before you write crap like this about our brothers, please find his daddy, walk up to him and tell THAT man his son sucked. Please get someone to video it for us. We will respect you for it even after daddy kicks the living crap out of you. Alonzo is not that hard to find.

Trash talking coaches is one thing, but those who trash players better have dropped some blood or at least sweet in the Orange and Green. Of course if you even had, you would never trash another Cane player. Well, except maybe Selio and Sapp. They just cannot control their mouths-- but they did actually play.

Good luck to the kid. By all accounts he's a bright kid and I'm sure he'll have success in whatever future field he chooses. Wish all our players took the approach to education that he took which now allows him to persue other opportunities

OP please provide link to story of AJ Highsmith's retirement.

If it is true then Good luck to the young man, he can now work as a grad assistant get his masters degree somewhere then go an become an nfl Quality control guy, which will in will lead to him getting a coaching job.

I bet he goes to either Bama, stanford, or Texas as a Grad assistant with his dad cashing in a favor or two.

Good Luck to the young man.

Go Canes

Alonzo messed his son up by pressuring the staff for him to play db... The kid was short but he would have been a good back up qb... He had adequate speed for option runs and wild cat... He also had a decent arm... He should have let him stayed at qb... He eventually started but he no more than an average db and seem to have lost his speed...

His dad's an nfl scout? I think if take his advice before yours

AJ was a legacy kid who if we were recruiting the way were supposed to doesn't see the field except special teams and is just a nice sideline story for commenters but with our cluster **** of coaches well you saw the results

I know he's an NFL scout, my opinion is of the impression he was hopeful his son can get an opportunity in the NFL. However, I believe he was more of a back up qb and his NFL aspirations were going to be a long shot no matter what... He was more of a back up qb...

They didn't switch AJ bc Alonzo pressured them. That's comical. They switched him, bc we had no one better, which explains why he was a starter. It's not AJ's fault we could not recruit someone to beat him out.

Some of you ought to think twice before trashing our players. Whether you believe it r not, it can factor in recruiting.

Maybe pressured was a bit of exaggeration but he was quite opinionated regarding his son's position and openly expressed his preference for AJ playing db... I think he preferred that when he was in hs but AJ was a pretty dynamic high school qb...

Great kid that always smiled and gave his all... Although I felt he would have been more useful as a backup qb, I don't think he was nearly as bad as some of us make it seem...

Apparently going to be a scout with the 9ers.... good for him.

That being said, all of the "it's the scheme" guys should take this into consideration, this guy played a TON of snaps for us at safety.

You can't have it both ways. Either Golden can't recruit, or he can't coach a lick either.

He had 3 years to find a better talent to replace AJ.

So what. I don't care who is daddy is. The kid was garbage on the field. And that's the only reason he was here. Because who his daddy is.

Since when does it matter for Miami football to have kids that don't get in trouble and go to class and try real, real hard and say the right things? I guess Miami wants to become Wake Forest or Duke. Keep starting kids like this and we are well on our way.

uncw305 every Cane paying attention knows what AJ was as a game-day player. However, he seems like a genuinely good kid and Cane to the core. Trash talking our players only makes you look bad and causes Canes to question whether you are a Cane. He has graduated and hopefully will have success at whatever he does next. Keep it moving.

Unless u went to miami as a student, dropped some sweat on greentree please don't talk crap about our players. We all know his career at miami but kid graduated and was a nice kid. did he go out of his way to personally hurt you? He wasn't the greatest player but he was a cane and carried himself well. No reason to bash him when his nfl dreams just ended.

Agree.

He should have stayed at QB.

He never struck me as a kid who was aggressive enough for defense ... But it would have been interesting to see him develop as a QB. He would measure above average as an athlete for QB, but is probably below average as an athlete for DB.

That's all I was saying... He came in running a 4.6 I believe... He was pretty shifty as well... Moving to db and gaining weight negated all of those attributes... He was too heavy, stiff and slow... Didn't he run like a 4.8 or 4.9 at his pro day? That's not cutting it...

He wasn't that bad when he played QB, you gotta remember he played QB all 4 years in HS. He moved to Defense because of our lack of depth. He was a team player and would've changed his position another 10 times if it benefited our team. Who cares if he lacked professional talent, he was a true Cane and anyone who is a true Cane is loved in my books. 88 days can't come soon enough.

Looks like you and AJ have something in common, you both "suck" at something. AJ as a safety and you as a fan. I hope you are as smart as AJ and retire also.

See , this is the problem with having so many people on the board that don't apply logic or sensibility to their arguments.

If you look at our safeties, i'd say he has found much better talent to replace AJ.... Now whether that talent should be ready to replace AJ their freshmen or sophomore year, is a different story.

People may not want to realize this, but this is Al Golden's first Junior class. Sure the seniors were "recruited by Al".. but no one in their right mind would count that class against him..

I think he has...
