Any good analysis of what caused Guidry to lose it?

Can anyone point to the reasons Guidry and the defense fell off a cliff. If we just had the 23 defense we’d still be playing. It can’t just be the loss of Kam and JW. We added a ton of portal lineman but got less pressure. I remember how worried we were about losing him to LSU and gave him a new deal.

What happened to the exotic pressures and 3rd quarter adjustments?

It reminds me somewhat of Alex Grinch and Don Brown.

Lost both safeties to early entry last year, staff neglected DB in portal to keep same talent level or upgrade and unit fell apart quickly with guys either not playable (#7/#19/#25) or playing in wrong position because of lack of options (#2/#0).. Since we can focus on certain groups every other year, we will now shore up the db group this year while we lose our 1 year rental generational QB and the small window we had last year..

The two safeties alone probably put us in the playoffs.

James Williams is in the NFL
Kam Kinchens is in the NFL
Leonard Taylor is in the NFL
Te’Cory Couch is gone
Jaden Davis was drafted by the NFL
Mauigoa got slow
Bain was injured and never himself
Damari brown was injured in week 1
Elijah Alston was injured most of the season
Losing Harvey and JHH was ****-on at the time, but they’re both good players and would have helped a ton. Branson Deen as well.
Jaden Harris is in the conversation for worst Miami safety of all-time
The defense wasn’t nearly as good as some of you remember. It was WAY better than this year, obviously, but not great. People just hated Dawson because of TVD, but the offense was statistically better last season.
We can’t recruit DBs to save our lives to replace the kids above we lost
Opposing coaches now have power level film on Guidry

Bottom line, we lost several NFL players/very good players and replaced them with **** on toast. Going from Kam and James to Meesh and Harris is like leaving Bern’s and diving thru Arby’s. Guidry was clearly outclassed schematically, but his staff and Mario did him no favors by again providing Arby’s. The portal additions have stunk, the DB recruiting has been beyond nightmarish conditions and Guidry was clueless.

1. He had some mature guys last year that were taught fundamentals already and could help others get lined up

2. He runs a lot of match. Those mature guys understood the assignments. I'd bet have of our lineup issues has to do with running match and the defense being confused on who has who when motion happens. It looks like man, but it ain't.

3. Maguinoa got hurt and regressed. Due to safety play and other reasons, we had him playing more in space. Recipe for disaster

4. Everyone hates the stunts, but our dline regressed. Could not generate pressure heads up to save our lives. Injuries, regression, etc. Poor execution all around

5. We stopped simulating pressure after the usf game because people remembered that Louisville last year gave everyone the blueprint. So now you have to have your line get pressure with 4 and your linebacker help your back end. We couldn't do either and now the defense is even less disguised. We made it real easy for opposing qbs.

6. It seemed like guidry assumed teams would keep doing what they've done all year in the 1st halfs when in reality they had a gameplan to exploit our weakness. Our defensive gameplanning underachieved.

There's more. But that's some of the bigger things I saw outside of the obvious talent change from last year.

More of scheme and lack of adjustments than talent deficiency. Did we have drop off at DB talent sure. But our defense allowed offenses to do things they didn’t do against others. I refuse to believe our backend talent was so bad that our coaches could not scheme a better plan to protect them.

We could rattle off 10 teams easily who had lesser talent than us but played better defensively overall.

**** watching them allow Kiko to line up wide to cover a RB on go routes for 3 games was enough to let me know we had scheme problem. Because there is no way you watch him play and believe that’s something he could do well. It’s not in his skill set and after watching the first team (Cal I believe) do it and have some success you’d have to think “Hmmm… teams who have RBs who can catch are going to try this. I need to do something different here because that’s obviously the go route in that match up.” Believing your Mike backers can cover go routes on RB consistently is asinine. And borderline incompetence

I think the first few posters nailed it pretty well.

One issue is lack of accountability. Mario doesn't seem to intervene in any situation during the season. He hires people and let's them do whatever the **** the want.

A good head coach should be keeping his staff within the correct lane. Mario should have given Guidry course corrections throughout the season, but it's obvious that that didn't occur.

I dont think the defensive staff meshes well together. Mario hires yes-men who won't challenge him on things, instead of innovative guys who teach to the system.

I also wonder if the kids even go to practice sometimes. Damari Browns first rep coming back from injury a few weeks ago, he did a full 360 ballet spin on the line. Is that taught? Against ISU, #15 or #19 is literally running out of bounds trying to keep up with his WR. Is that taught?

Mario is famous for being a top recruiter. I really don't believe this at all. He gets highly rated players. Guys who are supposed "4 stars" but rarely pan out to being even G5 guys. He gets guys that the big schools passed on bc they did their homework.

As a result of him trying to keep the SFL highschool pipelines loyal, he sacrifices any semblance of intelligence/football IQ on his roster. There isnt any good fundamental ball down here. Its blitz the QB, run go routes, and 7 on 7. Kids like Bissainthe don't know where to line up after being in the program for 3 years. There's probably a huge chunk of the roster that's actually illiterate. Look at how many kids aren't ever put in front of a microphone or so interviews.

There's a lot of small issues that compound into bigger problems.

In 2024 with other teams
On dline
Harrison hunte had 6.5 sacks 9 tackles for loss
Harvey had 7.5 sacks 13 tackles for loss
Taylor is an nfl guy and producing
Chantz Williams 4 sacks 7 tackles for loss

At linebacker
Corey flagg
80 plus tackles for mizzou 5 tackles for loss

Safety
kam kinchens(probably the best rookie db in the nfl)

James Williams (making tackles in the nfl on defense at linebacker)

Cb
Plus couch who is with addae with the bills on the practice squad and Jaden Davis with the cardinals

We lost alot of talent, he11 we talk about the db losses but we underrated what we lost on the dline with hunte, Taylor and Harvey **** even at linebacker with Flagg.

1. Bad recruiting
2. Bad development
3. Bad evaluations
4. Dumb players which means not being taught well
5. Got exposed as a DC after one year of playing at the highest level. It’s like offenses was sitting in the huddle and knew the plays.
All💯would add:

1. Below average staff
2. Poor week to week and in game adjustment capability ( we had 6 months for UF game to prepare, with 6 days Guidry not organized enough to excel.
3. Maybe not hardest working staff
4. Big drop off from Addae to Chevis.

Thank you, thank you. Some make it sound like we lost Bama level NFL talent.
Could argue our high-powered offense forced opponents into shoot outs, but still no excuse for a defense that often was misaligned, wasn’t physical and from the first to last game got abused on off tackle and perimeter runs. Don’t care if we lined up a bunch of walk-ons, at some point you figure it out and make adjustments.
Guidry obviously struggled to make proper fixes. It’s also clear the rest of defensive staff are recruiters and not capable coaches. Our head coach is an old OL coach - never a coordinator -and lacked the expertise to step in and fix the defense.
In his CEO role, Mario now needs to identify a quality DC and give him total control of that side of the ball.

How come so many other teams can do more with way less talent than Miami? It’s going on 20 years of the same excuse, not enough talent. Let’s just face the facts, since Butch, we have struck out on coaches. Talent excuse is played out.
Culture of losing and expectations. Why did we win 5 titles? Culture within program demanded excellence, and we made some really bad hires at AD and HC.
I am not biggest Mario fan as a game tactician and game manager, however, he does understand the culture of hard work and high expectations has to return.

This has happened at a number of schools ( Nebraska, USC, Etc) where bad hires changed the fabric of the program. You make a few bad hires, and all you wind up doing is cuttting and pasting every 3 years with different systems, coaches, etc.

For better or worse, Mario having a 10 yr deal will ensure continuity of message and culture. He may not be good enough to win a Natty, but I think it is our best chance to have a consistent winning program.

You know why Mario can’t intervene with schematic changes? It’s because he’s not a schematic coach. He brings no value to coaching in that area. He cant help the defense figure things out like a Kirby, Lanning, Stoops, etc…..He cant tweak the offense like Kiffin, Harbaugh, **** Lashlee. (Not saying those coaches are perfect).

Mario has to stay out the way and ride the rollercoaster because he can’t help, outside of O-Line ****
