that Golden and his staff feel this team/program isn't all that far away from winning big( perhaps as soon as next season). Just thinking about it, but he basically turned over more than a third of the roster last season( which suggests long-term thinking) and I can't remember the last time UM was so active on the JUCO scene across the board like they are in this recruiting season

It reminds me a bit of 2000 when guys like McDougle and Shockey were brought in by Paul Hilton Davis and plugged in certain spots as the roster was upgraded the previous seasons. Hired guns, designed to help right away( as George Allen would say,''The future is now." Bring in some grown *** men to compete with the elite and allow the younger players to continue to develop

That's the feeling I get, at least

Am I completely off-base?

k9, you aren't off. i don't think we are that active in the juco ranks this year as much as it's just a spot or 2. obviously they think an upgrade at dt and te seems to be where they wanted help from juco. they are active, but, it seems really at those 2 spots.

Yeah, that's kinda what I mean, Golden and Co feel that there has been major upgrades across the board on the depth chart, now it's time to just pick and choose certain spots( the ones you mentioned) to make a big run for 2013. I really believe that if they were further behind in the process of putting together a team that they feel comfortable with, they would just keep getting kids out of high school and develop them for the long(er) term

I think you nailed it - but it also shows just how weak we were at DL (once Forston, Olivier) left early.

We could win without Beau Sandland (though I'm stoked)
But we will not win without immediate impact on the DL

Statement of truth right here.

This post hits the nail on the head but also, golden knows he has to win in year 3 for this thing to really gain momentum. He needs to win 10 games next year to keep the fan base and prove to recruits that we are national contenders again.

He needs a JUCO D-Lineman desperately. If he can plug someone in that is either #2 to Porter or #3 to Porter and Pierre, we should be set up front. Between Porter, Pierre, Robinson, and a good JUCO kid, with Bond, McCord, and Figueroa and co. Outside, we should be able to get some pass rush and hold our own in the running game

I don't know if they are going after the Juco because they can be great next season(not saying they won't be) but more that they see a desperate need to fix a certain position right away to take the next step.

This pretty much says it all. The DL situation is dire. Not much more complicated than that.

Nonsense. Golden gave up on rushing this process after the Shapiro issue kicked the legs out from under the momentum he had built leading up to his first year as HC. He's in this for the long run and will build methodically and carefully trying his best to work around the coming sanctions. He's having to work hard enough to win recruits over because of the NcAA thing....forget about the issue of being national contenders for now.

My money is that he is rushing the process along, so that when sanctions come, we have enough momentum to overcome whatever gets thrown our way.

We Gon' be good next year. Especially if we keep Porter and sign a legit JUCO D-Tackle.

Agree that we need to keep the momentum moving forward next year. Otherwise the sanctions could erase the goodwill built-up by Golden. New coaches usually have only a few years to energize the fan base. If we win 10+ next year with the added help of JUCOs we should be able to ride out any sanctions imposed as the fans will see a capable leader (AG) guding us through the tough times. Besides, we haven't been relevant nationally for 10 years. We need a push now to re-plant the "dream school" seed in youngsters.

Honestly, I think 10 wins next season has to be the floor. In the ACC I don't think anyone aside from FSU can stop our offense and if we play Clemson, they'll likely torch our current defense but that's by no means a loss. We have a weak OOC schedule next year. Assuming we play Clemson, we would need to go 1/3 vs Clemson, FSU, and UF to get to 10 wins.

Nearly all our games were close but, that also taking into consideration large chunks of games where the offense was just completely nonexistent. I think that with Morris finally having a full season under Fisch and the acquisition of Sandland that this offense is going to be awfully difficult for anyone to stop.

If we're able to pull in a good JUCO DT to give us a three deep and Bryant, the defense will make a big jump. The linebackers aren't very deep but have a couple of outstanding players in EJ and DP. We need another safety in a bad way, but the depth at corner has me convinced we'll get some much better play there. The key is a DT ready to play now though.

117th ranked defense. Sure, we'll be a lot better on that side of the ball in 2013, but as of our last game we still can't stop anybody.
