Didn't Magic Benton come to The U???
Transferred a year or two later. But he originally picked the Noles in that 94 class. SICK to my stomach when we lost him. That was a bad morning in UM history.Didn't Magic Benton come to The U???

Never realized that or maybe I forgot. I was only 11 at that time. I clearly remember him wearing #8 and falling short of the hype for us, just thought he signed with us out of high school...Transferred a year or two later. Sean Spence was a better player than 6 (Matt thomas) in high school. As a HS player it goes:
Willie Williams
Marvin Jones
Lamont Green
Nate Webster
(Then a very large gap from 4-5 and it’s still not gonna be Sean Spence. Like I said I have nothing but love for Spence he was a fine player but Keith Carter, Matthew Thomas and someone everyone is forgetting to mention is James Burgess. Burgess didn’t really pan out for us but was a very highly regarded recruit. Everyone thought he was gonna be the savior at LB after Barrow, Smith and Armstead left.
I remember a story of someone going to watch one of the early practices in 93 that was open to the public. He went to watch Jammi German and James Burgess to see what all the hype was about. But what he discovered was there was another true FR on the team that looked to be not only the best FR on the team but what he described looked to be hands down the best player on the team. Said he was all over the field lighting people up! Anyone care to guess who that was? That’s right some skinny kid named Ray Lewis.
I said that though....I didnt watch much of any down south football. But would see the Davis brothers highlights more so on channel 10 or 7 and would chart their stats on the saturday paper. I was in elementary school then my man lolIt’s okay to say “I was too young to really remember Lamont Green at Southridge”. Lol. Anyone who saw those Southridge teams in 92-93 knows that Lamont Green, the Davis Brothers and Sedrrick Irvin took a back seat to nobody.
I would argue losing Lamont Green on NSD to FSU was probably a Top 5 worst day in recruiting in UM history because it was a domino effect. Every elite kid from Dade followed him that year..He took Magic Benton, Samari Rolle, and Troy Saunders with him. I was so sick that morning after I called in to the Bill Buckhalter dial in recruiting show when he did that automated voice telling you who signed where for the Orlando sentinel that I called out from work. Was too sick.
If it wasn’t for Omar Rolle committing to us that day it would have EASILY been the worst recruiting day in my lifetime. Dennis wouldn’t have survived that aftermath in this era.
Same thing i tought was 1 of my fav players as a jitNever realized that or maybe I forgot. I was only 11 at that time. I clearly remember him wearing #8 and falling short of the hype for us, just thought he signed with us out of high school...
That's because Erickson was a notoriously Lazy recruiter...Bowden ate him alive from 92-94 in recruiting...Butch turned the tables a couple of yrs later. It’s okay to say “I was too young to really remember Lamont Green at Southridge”. Probably as far as accolades and career but not as a prospect. Like I said I loved Sean Spence but people putting him up there with guys like WW, Nate, Lamont, Marvin is absurd.Sean Spence was a better player than 6 (Matt thomas) in high school.
Erickson won with Jimmy’s recruits. Then he landed some big time guys just off of who we was. Bowden ate him alive his last few years at Miami like you said. Bowden stole so many guys from Dade/Broward from 90-95 it’s not even funny. That's because Erickson was a notoriously Lazy recruiter...Bowden ate him alive from 92-94 in recruiting...Butch turned the tables a couple of yrs later.
LOL. Bruh it was 30 years ago. You seriously going to test my memory at the drop of a hat about something like that? So the exact details were off, but they get the point. Smh.Huh? Magic never went to fSU. Committed there but never enrolled.
Bill is a legend. That voice of his when you dialed in would make the earth stand still.I said that though....I didnt watch much of any down south football. They didnt show much highlights of lbs then.
I said i knew Lamont Green was a big deal because he always was in the paper and i remember it being a big deal when he committed.
*Cool Story..PROP JOE got wrote about by Bill Buckhalter as a Dandy Dozen or whatever it was called after i camped at the lineman camp called Down n Dirty n was ****** sh*t up lol
Yeah. Its amazing it took the SEC and other teams like Ohio State so long to figure out what was going on down here. It took another 15 years or so before the SEC realized that if you pluck some elite South Florida kids here and there you can win alot of games. Lol. Nobody realized that half of Bobbys roster during that 1993-2000 dynasty run were south florida kids. They were definitely asleep at the wheel.Erickson won with Jimmy’s recruits. Scroll up a few pages. We talked about DThomas and why he wouldnt be in the Mount Rushmore if we are talking HS accolades only.Another Great LB to consider is Derrick Thomas, played with a good friend of mine at South Miami. Said he was a beast.
Sometimes its hard to keep track with the different threads. Thanks thoughScroll up a few pages. We talked about DThomas and why he wouldnt be in the Mount Rushmore if we are talking HS accolades only.
If you remember Troy Saunders from Springs, do you remember Mitch Green, who was their RB a few years earlier? He was an unbelievable RB. I used to go to their games and he was just unreal. I think I went to the game where we broke the dade country single game rushing record that later Gore beat easily. But he got something like 350yards against Hialeah or HML and had like 3-4 50 yard runs in the 4th quarter. Just an unreal RB that didn't do anything with his talent after.LOL. Man was that his name? I remember that kid! Unfortunately because he wasn’t highly recruited (from what I remember) I lost track of him. Did he end up going to college on a scholarship? If you remember Troy Saunders from Springs, do you remember Mitch Green, who was their RB a few years earlier? He was an unbelievable RB. No man he didn't. I think he got some looks from Nebraska and i heard that he got a training camp try with Phins later, but never confirmed that. He was such a huge talent but the school part wasn't there... I feel, respectfully, that he may have had a learning disability no one cared about cause he was so talented.Man was that his name?
