Totally get where you are coming from but I think the frustration with Mario is warranted. He’s had a budget and resources in an unrestricted era to put this team in the playoffs. And it didn’t happen. It’s all under his watch at this point — he flipped the roster, picked the coaches, picked the players… and he lost two gimmes.
I say let the frustration flow. It isn’t hate; it’s passion.
Sensible post. I told myself and everyone that it takes 18 to 24 months to flip a roster and build a team like how you want it. Year 3 is when we should really start to see big results. Year 4 is the final verdict as to what he will be and you can make a decision whether to keep or move on. Just like elections for presidents every four years. The problem is, if you look at the totality of his tenure, including the first two seasons, it's been somewhat of catastrophe. I don't care what anyone says, there was more than enough talent on the 2022 team to beat Middle Tennessee and get to bowl eligibility. In 2023, the inexplicable and infamous inability to end the game against Georgia Tech remains one of the most inept coaching decisions in the history of organized football at any level. This season, with the best offense in America, with a Heisman finalist, you failed to protect a three touchdown lead against an inferior opponent in the most important game to the program in 6 years and we are toasting pop tarts now. There is a pattern here and enough evidence on tape to show that he isn't the man for the job. Look, I don't hate Mario. I didn't hate Shannon. Both men were Canes and in our hayday, both played on championship teams. BUT, both men were/are not up for THIS job. This job is hard! To be honest with you, I'd like someone who isn't close to the program at all but can come in and can objectively build it and is obsessed with winning and nothing else. This will be an unpopular opinion, but the next hire needs to be a tyrant like a Saban, like a Meyer, like a Dabo, like a Smart, etc. Classless jerks, but by God, they have a system and a formula and they will never stray from it.
When I look at Mario, I see a guy who just likes doing one aspect of the job (recruiting) and not game planning for a specific opponent week in and week out. He works hard, but he doesn't necessarily work smart. He's somewhat clueless with the more cerebral aspects of the game. Therefore, he needs extremely intelligent and expensive coordinators, coaches, and player evaluators basically doing all of the work where he can just focus on the only thing he truly loves, which is recruiting. The problem is, this new era of college football and NIL will neutralize coaches like Mario who are one dimensional recruiters selling program building. With his greatest strength neutralized, what we have is an engine that can't get to the 4th gear. Therefore, we will remain average and nothing more.
