Al Golden and the Defensive Staff

This defense is better suited as a 4-3 with McCord and Muhammad at de. They can get after the passer and will be better in run support. In the current scheme they're out of position a lot and covering wr's.

It's not complete foolishness to have some faith in next years D. There's some good parts to it. Yes DT is terrifying but the pass rush showed flashes last year, and it was mostly young guys. Bush being at full strength will help because IMO, he was our best blitzer. McCord and Muhammed are destined to do big things, just not sure where they are at just yet. Pass rush changes everything, and masks a lot. Pass rush + legit secondary......well there's some hope. A real cooridinator could do some really good things despite our weaknesses. We will see.

Not sure Doritos has what it takes to make the changes.

Just saying we will be better by default. Beyond that, it's up to the guy in charge to decide just how good we will be.

For us to be better by default, Earl Moore cannot be the dude who plays Porter's 2013 position. It just won't work. Anyone know if Michael Wyche needs a paper written or for me to make index cards? We can help.

I really don't know, Lu. Porter was an absolute animal in the UiF game. One of the best games by a Miami DT in years. But the rest of the season, I dunno, maybe I just couldn't bare to watch but it wasn't much.

Make or break year for Moore since he is now getting to that point where Porter really started to flash some promise.

I hear ya though. The LB, DE, and secondary should all be solid though with the potential to be difference makers. We are going to give up a ton of yards again but I think the sacks and turnover continue to rise.

Yep. We need our version of Mebane lined up over center. Wyche certainly seems to fit the bill more than Moore. My favorite pressure, by far, is A gap. I've always felt it uniquely challenges a quarterback to have pressure straight up the middle.

Getting a little tired of people pointing to one of the best defenses in recent history and telling a college coach, that deals with constant roster overturn, to emulate that.

It's just ****ing stupid.

Be like the best professional defense on the planet? Groundbreaking.

Lock Thread.

"Carroll’s Seahawks are a different story. In Carroll’s first season with Seattle, his team ranked a dreadful 25th in scoring defense and 27th in total defense. The Seahawks jumped to seventh and ninth, respectively, the next year, though, and haven’t looked back since, finishing first in both categories this season. The biggest reason is the job Carroll and general manager John Schneider have done in revamping the roster."

Love Seattle's defense. It isn't a college style defense though, Carroll even said it himself. Said it was too tough. Everyone has to be able to 1-Gap and 2-Gap along the DL. They play alot of combo looks with their guys in the box.

That said, playing aggressive press coverage, and getting after the passer are things the Canes could do.

when we've done that, with our current front 4, we get waxed, just like we do with basically anything else we try.. I this point, i'm inclined to believe the jimmy's and joe's have more to do with it than the x's and o's..

Besides that, our defense can't be sooo complex that temple kids were able to pick it up, but ours can't.

While I think it would be naive to believe the U has loads of defensive talent in the front 7 outside of a few guys, I think we'd all agree that obviously there are many coaches who could do more with what Miami has at this time. No way should Miami ever have a defense that isn't at least in the top 50. The ACC isn't even the Big 12 or Pac-10 when it comes to crazy, high scoring offenses.

Golden's 4th year here and we still don't have the pieces we need in the front seven.

Seattle doesn't run 5 skinny guys onto the field for every 3rd down. I don't know why they don't pick up on that.

Can't help but to retain hope that Golden is capable of fixing this. I get how stubborn he is but going back to his early days at Temple, everyone that knows Golden consistly states that every little thing he does is extremely thought out and calculated. I know Al is a smart guy, he is absolutely capable of fixing this... I guess it's just a matter of him pulling the trigger.

"Think players, then plays," Al Golden

If this is true we should see some major revamping schematically as we don't have adequate depth and talent at DT to expect this 2 gap scheme to work.

And the last 3 years was what???? All of a sudden he is going to figure it out... wow.

we can't buy them from one season to the next.. revamping the roster in college takes at LEAST 2-3 years..( ie... 2-3 recruiting classes).. and this is his legit 3rd class..

that's possible, and maybe they could do more with the guys we're trotting out there, but that's not a long term solution.. golden is trying to fix this long term, not put a bandaid on it for a year and then try to install his system..

He's done pretty well at OL, WR, DB, DE. He's been average at LB, QB and TE. I'd say he's been subpar at RB. He's failed at DT.

i'll give you TE.. but Olsen and Kaaya are solid QB pick ups.. I think we'd be in better shape at LB had some of our guys not been flunkies, those guys that got booted had potential.. agree 100% with RB, not sure why either, we have solid RB history.. and DTs i'm not sure either, he can point to knighton and wilkerson in the NFL and say "those guys came to temple and look where they are now"..

i mean if we're judging the DT guys before his first legit class has had the time to be juniors, nothing..

Sounds like what you're saying is that magically next year (it's always next year with this guy), he will have those pieces? Which actually contradicts what you just porsted.

that's not what i'm saying at all actually. It does take time, that's just logic, people see the U on the side of the helmet and think we're loaded and just need a coach to handle the abundance of talent. That's not the case. Now, his first class will be Juniors this year, so we should start seeing more improvement, and with the JC guys coming in, who knows, it could be drastic improvement if those guys ball like we are hoping/expecting them to do.

Some day people will realize that 10 years of sucking, doesn't get fixed in 2 classes, and if randy had been recruiting well and just mismanaging the on field product, that'd be one thing.. but the classes that should have been seniors and juniors this years.. and next years Seniors, were just not good. I see people throw the term out "development all the time".. but a polished **** is only that.. you have to have a solid foundation to develop a guy into a stud..
