With Chatfield can’t it just come down to fit? He’s definitely a fit in their scheme and a role player here. Just saying, might be over-thinking it a bit.

He’s no LB running a 5 flat 40. He’s a DE in the mold of Toolbox. Toolbox wasn’t a OLB either.

A 3-4 OLB and DE and both Edge rushers...they essentially have the same role, except occasionally a 3-4 OLB will drop into coverage. That's why 3-4 NFL teams are looking at Trent Harris as an edge rusher.

no

Don't "no" him, he's right.

Yall are putting way too much stock into this forty time. He's not a 4.9 kid on the field. I know a kid who's ESPN recruiting profile says 4.7 and he ran an electronic 4.47 his freshman year of college.

Yall are trying to use this forty time to validate a reason for him coming here and playing DE in the 4-3. Guys who know a lot more about his ability than we do think he's a 3-4 OLB. His own high school coach thinks he should be a 3-4 OLB and he's been coaching him for years.

In no world is a 6'2" 245lb 4-3 DE considered ideal. Now a 6'2" 245lb OLB...completely different story.
Even if he struggled in space, their DC would make sure they only put him in those situations a limited number of times. (how often you see Von Miller or Suggs in space?) More often than not, you're gonna have your best pass rushing OLB coming off the edge not playing in the flats.

Wait a minute, if one of your OLB is no threat to defend the pass and is a pass rushing specialist, what makes him any different than a 4-3 DE who rushes the passer and never plays in space?

Isnt the whole point of a 3-4 is to give the D more flexibility using their OLB to rush the passer, defend the pass, run down running plays to the edge, etc?? If Chatfield can only do one thing, what value is he in a 3-4?

I will say, seeing as how a couple guys have asked Dee a few times about how this weekend has gone and Dee hasn't answered ****, I would go out on a limb and say thats good for us. And Rattler is still MIA.

Because he **** near said too much on Saturday morn! It had to be erased...I worry about him, he may fold under questioning (Pesci voice)

Could you summarize what rattler said Saturday morning?

NO

It was Dee, not rattler...And it didn't seem like a big deal, the post was deleted

Here's the deal with the Chatfields, Briggs and others like them -- the cardinal sin of their recruitment: They just don't want to come to Miami.

Not Richt's Miami, not Golden's Miami, not Jimmy's Miami. We could have Alabama'd the game for the the last 10 years and they wouldn't want to come. I don't know why that is, but you see it every single year. Some kid that everyone pencils into our class because of the almighty "crooting algorithm", which doesn't take into account these guys are human beings and not Playerbot X.

I'm not bashing any of these kids for it either. I'm sure every school has them, we just notice it much more because of the concentration of highly skilled players in this area and how narrowly we've scraped by on talent for the last decade plus. Also because we feel, rightly or wrongly, these kids should have a debt of loyalty to the local program. A debt we would gladly excuse when it comes to the Coburns, DJ Johnsons and Ezzards.

I haven't thought Chatfield or Briggs were coming for awhile because they never showed me they wanted to be at Miami. Everything else is immaterial.

Ya i agree with a lot of this...But a lot of the local guys on here said Chatfield did want to come to UM. Esp before he got the offer (that's where all the complaining started... The rumor was he was dying to be a cane. And then it was pretty much a wrap when we offered. Go back and read the Chatfield thread...A lot of knowledgable posters Rattler, Gogeta, the whole board said it was a matter of time before he made it official.

**** the week offered the whole world switched their crystal balls to UM

I think he's a better fit here. He really could develop as a pass rusher like Trent Harris, and he's used to being a 4-3 DE.

He'll struggle in space as a 3-4 OLB. He ran a 4.95 40 at the Nike combine. He needs to be playing with his hand in the ground, at least in college.

Who knows what he's being sold on by Mullen though

He doesn't fit a 4-3 or 3-4. But in a 3-4 he doesn't have to go head up with a o-linemen every play.
Our most productive end was Trent Harris who is 6’2 240... Idk why he cannot see he could do well in our scheme..:

Harris was 250. I don't know if chatfield can get to 250.

Doesn't matter how good or bad he is at coverage, your QB still has to check/adjust his protection based on where he thinks the 4th rusher is coming from. Even if he thinks Chatfield is always coming, there's that ONE time Chatfield won't come that will force that QB to make a mistake.

4-3 DC's call zone blitzes and drop DE's into coverage for this same reason. With the 3-4 you have the luxury of the zone blitz built-in. It's something you do every almost every passing down.

Guys get paid millions in the nfl just to rush the qb.

Thanks for the clarification. If Chatfield is as bad as his 5.0 forty time in space, then a good OC could take advantage of that if they can run plays where Chatfield gets mismatched against a fast RB or TE.

I still think he could excel in a Corey Moore role. His pass rushing production is unbelievable. But i dont know if our scheme actually accommodates what VT did with Moore back in 99.

That's like asking what's the point of the Broncos running the 3-4 and having Von Miller at OLB when everybody in the NFL knows he's just gonna rush the passer most of the time.

Yall think big *** guys like Demarcus Ware are great in space versus NFL skill players? No. They still play OLB though.
3-4 DC's tailor their pressures so that guys like Ware aren't playing in space a ton.

I don't think anybody is saying that he can't be productive for us.

But being "productive" as an occasional pass rusher is much different than being a staple in somebody else's scheme.
Look at it from a kid's perspective and what they're selling him on.

Can't make a living that way. You might beat Chatfield once in a blue moon but you can't make a living like that.

If it was that simple then we'd see it in the NFL all the time with their 3-4 OLB's.
Guys like Demarcus Ware can't cover NFL RB's and TE's on a regular basis. (and his DC likely makes sure he doesn't have to)

DC's are checking personnel substitutions before every play. They're going to sub guys in/out accordingly and (try to) make sure that they don't have inferior guys in coverage or ask guys to do things that they're not capable of.
If the offense sends out their 10 Personnel (4 WR's) then the DC most likely is going to make sure that his call doesn't involve his slow OLB covering a slot WR in space.

I will say, seeing as how a couple guys have asked Dee a few times about how this weekend has gone and Dee hasn't answered ****, I would go out on a limb and say thats good for us. And Rattler is still MIA.

Exactly what I was thinking. Dee is never shy about sharing info, and he’s been quiet as a church mouse and vague.

But he did come out and make comments about the weekend implying good things. I think that was a day or so again and he’s been quiet ever since. I take it to mean that things changed but that’s my opinion

Like someone else did on this thread it’s our turn to close on some of these kids and get great news Wednesday. Go Canes!

For once we all gonna have to just respect that. By the way what i said about chatfield came straight from someone who would know the exact story. Also said jits a lil short of a full deck. So rational might not be the way go approach this. PLEASE NO MORE PMS.

Please don't give these cats any information. None. No leaking no statements.

Rattler’s silence has gotten my attention. He has said he’ll let us know if we were out of it. No news from him is good news.

You guys way overestimate what this guy may or may not know. He is obviously not really close to the kid and not very likely that they would tell him anything. Hopefully, TC decides to join the program but don’t expect anything from “Rattler”.

This is provocative and shameful.

Does it surprise you coming from him?

247 is saying we are dead on Chatfield and maybe because he told them he wasn't coming. We didn't even in home him lat week that's something to be said in itself

Shameful describes about 80% the posts the last few days.

Is this an attempt at baiting Rattler to reply and post some information that is not meant to be shared?

I am not wasting my time with that. Chances are the guy dosent know a thing. What has he ever posted to make you think the Campbell family will tell him anything about TC’s decision?

You disrespecting the man because he’s not on here blabbing about what his family is going to do on NSD really makes you look like an ***.

What makes you think the guy would disrespect and ruin his families day by putting his intentions on here.I respect him and Dee and UKnowWhat and all the other guys on here who have family or inside info that refrain from ruining a once in a lifetime day for their kin.

Those guys owe us NOTHING.They owe their family the decency of keeping their intentions quiet.
