After reading Mike kaffee report the last two days. This is all I have to say
Any update from this morning? So Omaha this year?
Was pitching better today??Standout guys from todays scrimmage: Ogden, Galvin, Peralta
It was all the freshman today, encouraging signs from all of them. Was pitching better today??
In your eyes, if we find a way to develop these guys and they take the step up, how good of a team could we be (with the level of coaching JD will bring).Need Robert to take a big step forward. Need Laz to be an impact guy.
Both have the velo but need to work on the secondary stuff. (Like most young guys).
It’s all going to come down to this staff developing players and making them better then when they showed up. So hopefully after last year JD did some deep self evaluation and started making changes.
Soto alone is going to help. I’ve always said strength and mobility will clean up some issues because your body goes to the path of least resistance.
But now we need to learn how to play the game as well.
Man we have a lot of new faces. In your eyes, if we find a way to develop these guys and they take the step up, how good of a team could we be (with the level of coaching JD will bring).
Love everything you just said, especially the whole concept of "fun baseball". This team is going to be significantly more athletic and offensively adept, multiple guys with double digit homers and SB's. All that I would add is that the development from the pitching side is starting to bear fruit, and I believe can really surprise some people.Man we have a lot of new faces.
I think we have a shot to be pretty good offensively. More SB’s, extra bases, etc. fun baseball.
The pitching is still really concerning. But let’s see what the small group, lifting, fall and winter practices bring.
Right now I don’t think we can be worse. I think we have some hard nosed well coached (from other programs) kids so if we can get to 33-36 wins and .500 in conf that would be a step in a positive direction.
That's very high expectation. I wouldn't put that on this team. I would say tournament team and lets hope we can push to be a top16 seed at the end of the yearSo Omaha this year?
Olivera looked absolutely horrible. In ACC play he's going to give up HRsRobert and Olivera on the mound to start the day here, velocities on the scoreboard too
slaide has looked amazing both days i’ve seen him, carving up some of the best hitters of the line up at the bottom of the zone. looks like a guy that’s gonna get us out of a jam when we need him. If people don’t know about hudson at this point they gotta get with the program, dude is gonna be a stud this yearI was able to watch the whole scrimmage. Olivera velo was also down from 92-93 to 90-91, he was leaving so many baseball right down the plate. Robert looked decent, his velo also was not impressive. 89-91. Vargas also struggled, did not get any help from his defense. Amaury De Jesus was playing 2nd and let a routine ground ball go right through his legs, next Ethan Puig committed his first of three fielding errors today (He is on the cut list imo) Jake Dorn came in next he was ok, I wasn't impressed by him. Brixton lofgren looked a lot better today than his first outting. He also was leaving balls over the plate and his velo is not very high. These next two are two players I think have a chance to do something for us this season or down the line. (This season) Slaide Naturmann this kid looks good man, his side arm stuff is really impressive, he is going to be a serious player for us this season. (Future) Freshman LHP Michael Fernandez he has the velocity but no control at the moment. He was painting corners at times but I think he is someone Laz needs to work with and he can be pretty good for us.
Hitting
Todd Hudson: Just a dude, also made 3 defensive plays at 1B. He continues to impress
Dorian Gonzalez: He had the best hit of the day, just a beautiful hit in the gap between CF & RF for a double, meatball thrown by Olivera
Defense
Renzo & Todd Hudson. If renzo could find his bat he will for sure be in the lineup. He made one of the best defensive plays ive seen this team make in a while. A absolute missle down the first base line, and Renzo full extension diving catch.
Nick Robert, first AB of the scrimmage i believe, they bunted on Robert, really nice bunt as well, Robert showing some athleticism and picks up the ball from the 3rd base line, and throws out the fast runner. Great play all around.
Negatives
- Left side of the infield is a massive issue
- Derek Williams has some base running issues (I was told this could be happening because theres no coaches at 1st and 3rd)
