2008 class vs 2023 class

Man what are you talking about? Revisionist history at its finest. You probably would only take Spence but college coaches would have recruited more of those guys. As for David, I guarantee you knew nothing about David in 08. Like you really had to follow MNW close and from that 07 & 08 class very few if any mentioned David as a player we should take. Recruiting in 08 is a lot different than 2022. David also developed physically in juco and was a stud at Nebraska. David wasn’t even the 2nd highest rated LB on that MNW team. They had a LB ranked higher that signed with USF.

It’s irrelevant to point out how someone recruits in 2022 compared to 08. Trends and tendencies change. So referencing a recruit this cycle is pointless. That being said, the majority of recruits during that 08 class was major contributors to us winning 9 games in year 2. They were projected to win 10+ games in 2010. If the evaluations were awful then they wouldn’t have had high expectations. They just didn’t develop. Most of all those guys would have been national recruits today if they were class of 2023 as well. I mean even Arthur Brown became an All American at KSU.
Agreed. David was a JUCO kid out of HS. He wasnt a miss. Ended up better than the rest of the MNW crew but even if he was a 4 star and Miami landed him I doubt he'd be where he is today. Shannon was that bad.

Shannon's sidelines were in utter disarray....I'm talking bad. Especially after Onion calling a TO 3mins into the game.

Seen a Twitter thread and this got me thinking. Can the 2023 class be better than the 2008 class on paper? I know the 2008 class flopped once they arrived here… Obviously the 2023 class is gonna have a better staff to develop around once they get here. But I’m asking this merely from a perspective of recruiting and not knowing what was gonna happen after they arrived at UM.
Don’t do this to yourself.

This class of ‘08 was definitely a top heavy, overrated class. I believe this same class in today’s recruiting era would’ve been top 10, not #1.

This class was unbelievably top heavy.

1. It had 32! players in this class.
By comparison:
2. ND - 23
3. Bama - 30
4. USC - 20
5. UF - 22
6. OU - 19
7. UGA - 25
8. UT - 20
9. OSU-18
10. Clemson - 21

2. Only Bama & us had a class over 25 players. Bama’s avg. recruit ranked .9124 / us .8722

3. This OL class had 2 guys in it, both were rated 4* (Benjamin Jones & Jeremy Lewis)
-One guy barely saw action (Jones)
-One guy started on the DL before being switched to OL yr 4
(Now we see y Jacory got beat up)

4. The class had 16 blue chips & 16 non blue chips in it. We know the story of the “blue chips” of this class.
1. Harris had no OL
2. Benjamin was solid
3. Brown transferred ASAP
4. Fortson was a bust
5. Streeter was a no-show until one solid Jr yr & dipped
6. Lewis was a bust
7. Jones was a bust
8. A Johnson was a bust
9. Spence was a beast
10. Futch was a bust
11. Telemaque had one solid season (RS-So) & that was it
12. Holton was a bust as a RB & LB
13. Robinson was an inconsistent contributor
14. D Johnson went from a promising T-Fr to M.I.A
15. B Harris was solid
16. R Buchanan had a solid Jr yr & that’s it

That’s a horrible ratio. The winner of the class of ‘08 was Bama; that was the catalyst to start their championship dominance. Our ‘08 class put us behind the 8-ball further. Sad times.
B. Harris was a 3 year starter, earned 1st team All conference, had national honors, left early, and went 2nd round. I am pretty sure that is beast mode

You can't take 7 wide receivers in one class unless you're Mike Leach. Even if every single one of them is great, you can't play everyone. Especially back then when we still used predominantly 2 wide receivers on offense.

You can't counter taking 7 wideouts with taking 2 offensive linemen. I mean jesus, you play two wide receivers at a time but you need five linemen to field an offense. What the **** were they doing.

They took three quarterbacks Harris was a solid take. Mid 4 star guy, #12 rated pro style passer. Taylor Cook was a decent 2nd guy. Rated a couple spots down from Harris with great size and arm. Cannon Smith should not have been a take for Miami.

Cannon Smith was taken for other reasons i believe. But class was sooooo unbalanced

Yeah, u right. His efforts went unnoticed b/c of the crap teams, but he was definitely more than solid; he & Spence lived up to the billings

I maybe wrong but I was always under the impression that Cannon was a political take and hoping his dad would be a major donor. I don’t have any inside info but kid was a 5’10 QB who prepped and his dad was the founder of fedex

Yea his dad was the founder of fedex. The class was incredibly unbalanced. But we had so holes prior to RS coming on. As a 1st time HC he couldn’t run a p5 program. We needed the transfer portal back then.

You don't ever reference the NFL and what a player does there to evaluate how they were in college. Plenty of college greats swing and miss in the NFL. A draft is where it stops IMO.
I’ve always felt like the minority by agreeing with this but yes I’m with you

I mean obviously there’s transferable qualities but I don’t really care what a guy does in the pros

I’m pretty sure we all would have took Vince Young, Reggie Bush, & Peter Warrick as college athletes. Sometimes the players skillset just don’t translate. Look at Warrick then look at Lavernues Coles.

When all is said and done, Butchs 97-2000 classes are untouchable. Greatest job of evaluations, recruiting & development in UM History, and arguably NCAA History. Stars aren't everything. Great Staffs combined with Great coaching and development is where it's at.
Agree a million percent but recruiting rankings were a bit different back then. Still, agree here!
