For the guys screaming about the portal, what positions do we really need to hammer? I’ve seen QB, DBs, LB and DT listed by some. Most I could see us getting via portal is six guys , maybe seven (1 QB, 2 DB, 1 or 2 LB and 1 or 2 DT). If we take more, where? At some point the young guys on the team gotta step up. DT next year looks like J Scott, Moten, A Jones, Horton and a transfer, maybe two. If we can’t get an elite QB in the portal, I don’t see the point in taking one. Some of our young DBs need to step up - Brown, Patterson, Stafford, Robbie Washington, Dylan Day and hopefully an incoming freshman. Add 1 or 2 transfers and I think we are good. LBs have Adarius, Popo, Wes, Pruitt and Alderman coming back. How many more we have room for? My entire philosophy is I hope we stick we high end guys only. At some point the HS recruiting needs to see the field.

Miami will always use the portal to get better! QB is needed. We have to see who enters. A center DTs DBs are needed. Probably a receiver. You can play young players with talent but you need guys who have been there before also. My biggest concern is QB and the schedule next year. College football isn’t a video game. When you play a lot of true freshman no matter how talented they are can be trouble.

But to everyone saying this portal class was “good”, this same caliber class would get us maybe 8 wins without Ward.

Personally, there’s no QB close to Ward that’s expected to hit the portal. Mateer isn’t on his level. He’s good, just not 1st rounder.

Portal class and evals need to be even better in 2025.

We don't need a cam ward if we can improve the floor of our incoming dline and DBS. We need a NFL go to receiver restrepo is good he is like a poor man wes Walker but I mean a go to outside receiver. One that is difficult to single cover.

I still believe you should prioritize his recruiting because you will likely have more time with them if they can reach or exceed their potential. I don't believe you need to prioritize QB anymore out of his. I think you need to prioritize the trenches then DBS then linebacker. Rb and wr are some of the easiest positions to fill. I don't think you can take 20 to 30 guys year in year out and be dominate. The program and nil has CFB look like the NFL off-season on steroids. Btw Im loving it. I can't remember the last time we have had this much balance in college football. All the top teams are bearable and all of them have been in a dog fight at least once this year. To be honest I don't think I've seen a team in playoff contention that has a lockdown defense either.

Do we know what people got paid?

Besides Hill and Richards, who are objectively just poor football players (Richards might be a S playing CB, but even so he never shone), I thought the transfer class was pretty good.

Ward, Martinez, Carpenter, Barrow and Brown are good players. Baron has tailed off massively, but got us through the early part of the schedule. Alston was good pre-injury. Powell has had some very timely turnovers.

I think some people have unrealistic expectations for the transfers portal.

I’m happy with Mario bringing in a half dozen contributors and another few players for depth. If there are surprise elite players declaring for the portal, and Mario can sign a few, all the better.

All programs need to build their roster around high school recruits and use the portal to fill needs. Sign elite portal players if fortunate enough to have such players matching your needs.

Here’s what’s gonna happen. We will land a big time kid we didn’t think we would. We will lose a battle that will be upsetting. And we will close with Alford. Wiley will go elsewhere. Even if we finish 10-12 I expect the portal to be used heavily this year. We need a QB, DBs with experience, a receiver, and DT badly. I expect fans to complain no matter what.
