Idk how we don’t have a sure fire 5 star CB lined up to come in and start..
especially with the level of recruiting we're doing ... i like our foundation next year though with brown and oj ... zaquan as your box ... need a quick twitch/sticky guy for the slot, would love for that to be robby/ie?

How’s Robby Washington been progressing at CB?

OJ has been a stud but we need Damari back or one of the other CBs to step up big time

DE, I’d be nice to see someone like Pickett get some reps on 3rd and longs. Baron is a great all around DE. But having speed off the edge is some thing we’re missing to produce quick pressure on the QB

Also Kiki has really struggled in space this year, so has Jaden Harris

Bottom-feeder is too strong.

Just looking at the ACC rankings, we're 7th in scoring defense (out of 17 teams) and 1st in total defense (which I think is deceptive, but worth noting).

I'd say average to below-average depending on how we finish. Yesterday was a step backwards against a bad offense.
Money I'm talking about UM standards. On Dukes 4 TDs the runner/receiver went into the end zone untouched by a UM defender each time. There were a number of kids on defense loafing. There is no leader on UM's defense.

Restrepo had 8 catches for 146 yards and 3 TDs and had two drops on balls he almost ALWAYS catches. They weren’t just flat drops in the open field, both were somewhat tough catches but he makes both of those 99 times out of 100. And he still goes 8 for 146 and 3.

He is simply one of the best football players we have ever had at that position, ever. End of story.

The narrative last year that the struggles of this team were due to him seeing too many targets continues to age like whole milk on blacktop on a July afternoon. Genuinely one of the most braindead discourses ever put into the universe by a fan base that is sadly known for saying the dumbest **** imaginable.

God bless that kid. I’m gonna miss the **** out of him next year and cannot articulate properly how much I’m going enjoy watching him play the rest of this season. He is exactly what it means to be a Miami Hurricane.

My guess is Meesh Powell plays more nickel and Patterson plays more safety.

That's what Guidry should have done before Richard's injury. Hate his hand had to be forced that way, but glad it's finally happening.

ZP is going to make his mistakes. But so did the prior personnel. Meanwhile, his two tackles were the types of plays we haven't seen since game 1 when Damari was in.

@DMoney Excellent article as usual

So do we need to do much better job in picking up right replacement CBs/Safeties in transfer protocol and recruitment process beyond 2024? What kind of skill sets?

!!!! It is not coaching’s fault that guys get out there and lose their composure more a few times a game. Because if you watch the film back all of the checks they miss on a big play, they got right on another play. They’re out there not reading keys
To me I think this happens or has happened quite a lot and we / other teams have an “eraser” who just cleans up busts. I know Guidry isn’t this bad of a coach. I will say the didn’t do the best job of prioritizing cbs and @DMoney spoke to nickel. With all that, I think we can go toe to toe with anyone this year. Conversely any can take us toe to toe as well.

ESPN's SP Plus (which adjusts all rankings to competition level) had us 31st nationally last week in defense. I expect us to drop a bit since Duke's offense stinks, but it will be in that general area.

Again, the defense is a major problem. I lose sleep over it. But saying it's a bottom-feeder defense is not in tune with the stats. There are a lot of bad defenses out there. We're towards the middle or a little below.

Haven't looked at the stats. But I presume what's propping us up is our run defense which is still generally stout. Against the pass, we fail the eyeball test. I've been following the Canes since the early 80s, and I believe this is the worst secondary we've fielded in over 40 years. Now that may not technically be bottom feeding. But it's super painful to watch.

Not D but yesterday duke was getting ball out quiiiiick, on most throws his first read was open and ball was out. I would say predetermined also, that's why he threw a couple picks because he was surprised by coverage.. he wasnt reading, just drop back and let go based on presnap..

When game got out of hand and he had to actual drop back it was different story
That is why actual complimentary football is important and some criticize the feel for the game in the game threads, etc. Miami goes up early and it is a boat race, but we sputtered on offense and then were in a dogfight because our D sucked, we got no pressure and Murphy could pick on any number of weak spots. We saw it when we stormed back, Duke had to play our game and not us play their game. There is a time and place for different offensive moves, we just have trouble getting there at times - until we let Cam get into rhythm and ball. Then we loosen up and can run or pass effectively, it seems.

Look at only conference games. It’s not great. If you look at only the ACC teams in games of ACC vs ACC, here is where Miami ranks:

Scoring defense: 14th out of 17
Yards per play allowed: 12th out of 17
Rushing yards per carry allowed: 12th out of 17
Sacks per game: 10th out of 17
TFLs per game: 10th out of 17

The first 4 games are really skewing the year totals. This defense has been well below average in the ACC. Maybe bottom feeder is a little too harsh, but we’re splitting hairs. The defense has been bad and is very likely going to cost us a real shot to win a national championship. The offense and kicking game are legitimately good enough to win a natty. I’m fully convinced.

Eh. Lot of sunshine when talking about the defense. What lacks is consistency and speed across the board. We still make terrible mistakes from communicating switches to run fits to attacking with just 4. Not sure if it’s scheme or players or both, but we are just a bad defense anyway you want to slice it. The most pathetic thing I saw was the defensive timeout before Dukes 4th down TD. First how are you not prepared for them to go for it you waste a timeout early in the 3rd? Second you call a timeout and the defense looks less prepared then just going with what you had out there. The slot is left under covered pre snap and post. The linebackers might as well have been statues with no1 watching 8 in motion. He ends up wide open too. That’s a great playcall from Duke that’s strictly based on watching film of how pathetic our defense is when it comes to motion action. We are going to have issues with GT, Wake and Cuse in that regard too. Gonna be a long 3 games coming up.

MVP was Jalen Rivers’ neck roll.

Honestly, Bell has come a long way at tackle and the lineup with Bell at tackle and Rivers at guard played the best.

Our OL is going to be just as good next year as it is this year, most likely even better with Rodriguez back and continued development of Cici, Bell and McCoy. Hope Coop, Samson and Kinsler come back. That would be a murderers row.

This is not an average defense. This is a bottom feeder defense. If it was average they wouldn’t be giving up team scoring highs.

I agree the secondary lacks talent but Guidry is getting worked every week. It’s like we go into the game with no gameplan at all, then Guidry waits until halftime to try this or that.

We keep playing the same guys who are getting exposed.
who doesnt know that teams are going to isolate our lb on their running back? They do it every game and Kiko is always a step or 5 behind

We’re getting a lot of pressure but not converting sacks. I think it’s a combination of things. Quarterbacks are comfortable challenging our secondary, Bain missing time, Baron being a little tight at the hips as a finisher, and Mauigoa not repeating his pass rush production from last year

D, we are not getting a lot of pressure. We are not getting that immediate pressure from someone just beating their man from the get go . Murphy had a clean pocket for the first three quarters.

@DMoney - I am curious what your analysis is on the DLine. Before the season started, I anticipated us getting much more pressure on the QB. Is the coverage so bad that these DL don't have time to get to the QB or is it something else I am missing. Thanks.
One thing is that offenses are leaving in more players to block because they feel comfortable beating out secondary with only 2-3 receivers
