Some thoughts on the Duke game after rewatch

Guidry says opposing teams will eventually play to their film, but as we have seen, opposing teams not doing that until 2nd half. I think Guidry thinks opposing teams will only do that for the first series.

If a team could come up with full game plan of different looks for us, it would be ugly.

That goal line stand where Duke shuffled and we were running around was as embarrassing as it gets from a planning perspective.

First half Murphy was getting the ball out fast. Looked like we played a lot more zone in the second half? By doing so it looked like it slowed down Murphy’s reads which in turn gave our DL more time to pressure. Last year I think we got a whole lot more pressure with blitz packages that got home vs this year where we’re sending people but we’re a step late. Need Damari back in the worst way.
with time and prep man to man gives clear reads

If you’re too dumb to run man or cover 3 I’m not sure what ya do lol. I’ve never seen anything like this in all my years. On the Duke fourth down they had two guys wide open and a third guy about to clear the lb’s face lol. Maybe that run a shell defense 🤷‍♂️ .

I agree with you. Intelligence is the only way I cant even try to explain it. There is zero effing way it's being taught that way. I can confirm its not, because ive seen the team actually do it correctly a few times. Half our big runs given up are players losing the edge on a stunt or simply not lining up correctly. Yesterday, in the redzone after the facemask, we had guys running sideline to sideline trying to figure out how to line up.

I personally think it's a mix of intelligence and athleticism. But maybe I'm wrong. Regardless if guidry is a g5 coach, I've seen his defenses ran flawlessly and take out much higher rated teams.

It seemed yesterday, every big play by Duke was perfectly schemed. The tape is out. It was the misdirection in the flats, getting kiko on a rb in 5 wide, trips with rub routes vs man, etc.

Bain is a problem, someone else has to step up and help him more consistently. Barrow and Mesidor are consistently violent. Baron and Alston have to go to another level.
I can agree with this for the secondary.

D-Line getting no help from Clark and Cook. These guys are just JAGS and nonexistent. I wasn't expecting them to be all ACC performers, but I thought they would have more of an impact than what they have had so far. Alston is still hurt, I believe. We do need better play from him when he's back. Baron just needs to wrap up and make tackles. He's still all over the field and in position to snuff out the play, but missing the tackle. Baron, Kiko, and Wes miss 3-4 easy tackles per game. I can't explain it and its beyond maddening.

Kiko isn't playing downhill because teams aren't running against us. Teams know they can torch us in the backend so he's having to play back, which has eliminated him from being able to play inctinctly
They are running against us, and having success doing so.. however, they are having to pass more as the game goes on to keep up with our offense. FSU’s strategy was good, because they had some 7 min drives that shortened the game and forced us to run and have long drives as well.. unfortunately for them, they didn’t have the talent to sustain drives. Against better teams we will have to be better on defense and force more 3 and outs. What I am noticing is that our D-Tackles are lining up in the b gap often with backers being responsible for the A’s. Teams run up the gut and easily block our backers. We had a total of 1 sack and 4 TFL yesterday!! That CANNOT HAPPEN at MIAMI!! Especially since we man blitzed a lot! We are just not winning in the front 7.

Excellent write-up as always!

Interesting notes on Restrepo…sometimes he’ll make a cut and he’ll remind me of Berrios for a split second, but I see what you mean with the RB comment too. I can’t wait to watch him on Sundays. Some team is going to be very lucky.

Also want to point out that after accounting for Cuban time, the stadium looked pretty full on TV. Don’t pay attention to the idiots that get off on screenshotting right at kickoff, but don’t understand Miami culture. I believe there were close to 60K there yesterday, which is fine for a Duke noon game.

I've played football into college and I played on team where this what the case. Long story short, our team wasn't smart enough to take on a new complex game plan designed to stop the other team. It ended up making us play slow as everyone was thinking about film study or the new wrinkles. At half, we would get back to some of these base blitzes and things installed in fall camp and we would route.

I have no clue if this is the case, but I think our backend is green. They struggle getting lined up. They're thinking to much. Some of our better plays in the secondary yesterday was when guys were bailing in zone.

I think guidry can improve but he's got his hands tied behind his back. His d line isn't doing him any favors. He needs to simulate pressure and/or stunt to get home. Opening big lanes. If they don't get home, we have a secondary who can't process the game getting torched. Man is the easiest thing to teach, yet these guys can't figure out how to get lined up.
Guidry basically does the first part to a T - see my previous post.

I think if you go into first half blind we need to at least try to impose our way and live with result (either heavy run blitz or cover 2 forcing offenses to take the stort stuff and stay disciplined).

Man is easier to teach, but becomes crazy to adjust with motion and complete offense shifts and new formations.

!!!! It is not coaching’s fault that guys get out there and lose their composure more a few times a game. Because if you watch the film back all of the checks they miss on a big play, they got right on another play. They’re out there not reading keys

ayo D$ why did you put Lincoln Riley over Ceedee Lamb for 2018 Oklahoma offense :ROFLMAO:

Kiko has regressed to a point opposing offenses are ******** themselves by not attacking him

Glad to see Pruitt getting more time on passing downs

Samson has a chance and is doing some good things in practice. Markel Bell has passed him. He's put a lot of dominant reps on tape and is improving every game.
Markel also has more collegiate experience than samson. I want Samson to succeed. But he might not have a spot on this roster come spring next year.

And they don’t communicate. If a team motions late enough, the DBs don’t even look at each other to talk or signal anything

1 play in particular I noticed on defense watching live was a 3rd down and 8ish with #2 in man coverage, his man was pre snap motion , #2 lollygagged following the motion, ball is snapped and QB immediately goes to his man and picks up an easy 1st down... only 1 play but I remembered it ****ed me off because it was obvious where the ball was going

Not D but yesterday duke was getting ball out quiiiiick, on most throws his first read was open and ball was out. I would say predetermined also, that's why he threw a couple picks because he was surprised by coverage.. he wasnt reading, just drop back and let go based on presnap..

When game got out of hand and he had to actual drop back it was different story
That was the most frustrating part first half. I said to myself we are getting beat by a one read QB because the first read is always open what in the world.
