WR Jontavious Carter off the team

Coley has come in and jumped the whole depth chart at one of the easiest positions to transition from high school.A freak injury and he could be starting. Everyone talks about hard work, but talent + hard work=transfers at that position.

Dawg, ur avi pic....CANT..STOP...LOOKIN

Guys are transferring at alarming rates... I think a lot of the issues aren't attributed to depth chart concerns... I always viewed Carter as role playing wideout... I didn't think he was going to be star but I did think he'll eventually contribute... Didn't he say he was coming for TStreeter's spot? That's why we need to chill with the tough talk from freshman... Kevin Nelson, Taylor Gadbois, and JCarter all displayed why we should take it with a grain of salt... I don't ever recall Duke selling out... I still don't... He's confident and his game speaks for him...

[h=2]Wide receiver Jontavious Carter leaves Hurricanes[/h] by Matt Porter The fourth player to leave Miami this month is wide receiver Jontavious Carter, a UM spokesman confirmed.
On Saturday, InsideTheU.com first reported the news that Carter, a redshirt freshman from Cordele, Ga., left the team.
Carter (6-2, 205) was a scout team player in 2012 and appeared to be entering this season behind Phillip Dorsett, Allen Hurns, Herb Waters, Rashawn Scott, Malcolm Lewis and emerging true freshman Stacy Coley.
Carter’s move leaves UM with seven scholarship receivers — the receivers named above and 6-4 redshirt freshman D’Mauri Jones. Coach Al Golden said last week depth at the position would be a recruiting focus going forward.
This month UM jettisoned defensive lineman Dyron Dye for to his connections to the ongoing NCAA case, and running back Danny Dillard and defensive lineman Jalen Grimble left involuntarily.

Kids gone because he was buried on the depth chart and Golden gave him the talk. Yeah, he wasn't good enough to cut it at Miami.

Meh. I think he was buried on the depth chart & gave AG the talk. I don't see it as him not being good enough to cut it at Miami... It's just he's not Stacy Coley & he would have had to wait for his opportunity, which he obviously wasn't willing to do.

I won't speculate on what is going on, but we are going to have a recruiting class of 35 kids.

With no scholarship reductions or attrition (there will be both), the max we can take is 28 to fill up 85 scholarship spots.

28 is the max, but then you add in early entries.
Off the top of my head I figure we signed like 19 last year with maybe 4 EE's. add in renfrow, Gilbert, o'donnell and elder leaves us with 6 spots for EE's this year, so 28 + 6 = 34 we can sign.
With 19 seniors graduating and no Dewey we would have 56 scholarship players leaving room for 29 more.
These numbers don't account for early draft entries and that it's 8 am on a Saturday and I'm still sipping my first cup of coffee.

That's the max we can take, that's is not the max we can sign. There will be more attrition, and you bet any money that Miami is going to appeal any scholarship reduction just to take a bigger class. There is no way I can see this team taken less than 30 kids.

Spot on with the early enrollees although I am not entirely convinced (and I have no basis for this, except that BC doesn't send out a bat signal when they sign) that JC transfers count against that total.

As for leaving, I have heard rumblings that some large boned backs (one in particular) were asked to switch to the scout team and consequently left the program but that no on liked them anyway. Wonder if the same thing happened with Jontavious.

Based on name alone, I am not sure who I would hate to see go more, Jontavious or DMauri. Feel like we need both now that we are recruiting receivers named Stacey.

We're taking the scholarship hit this year. You don't just lose 4 guys a week before the opener.

we may be taking a scholarship but also remember ur gonna have guys leave especially after a final or close to final depth chart is released after spring camp. wasn't it crawford that said hed see how his spring was before he decided if he wanted to leave or stay?

Dat boy scared of comp that's why the boy leaving and coley comes in and out shines him.

From what I've seen of Golden he is class act and i think is just being very honest with some of these players, expecially those that have used up their redshirt. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think even if they're asked to leave they have to sit out a year.

If that's the case, Golden is letting Dillard and carter know that it's early enough in their career to be able to sit out their sophomore year and transfer to a team where they'll get playing time for their Jr and Sr year. A much better chance of seeing the field at another school then here.

If these players had the right attitude and work ethic I really think Golden would let some other schools he doesn't compete with, say a Temple whose new coach used to be his Oline coach while still there, know that these guys will be able to make an impact by taking them.

Just my two cents.

The EE last year doesn't count because we sign 30+ in 2012 so the 2013 EE dont have a spot in the 2012 class and I don't think Renfrow, Gilbert and O'Donnell has anything to do in theses numbers, so we were at 20 counting Elder, it makes 5 EE spots for this class.

LOL Why do people flip out when guys who are never going to play leave the program? This is such a normal thing.

But why would he take that route with young players he just recruited? So many things can happen between now and their senior years...

Agreed. Possibly he took them because of depth concerns/unsure of what he had with his current roster due to the inexperience at positions (obviously he now knows that hes got a lot) and felt they could develop into players down the line. After one year, he might have seen enough to know that the talent currently in front of them and the talent that will be coming in the next class is too much.

Again, just speculation.

If he left voluntarily he's nothing but a quitter scared of competing and too shortsighted to realize that guys get hurt all the time. He's only a fcking freshmans. Unless he winds up at some cellar dwelling MAC school he's going to have to compete no matter what. I got no good feelings for quitters.

If he left on his own, it's a testament to the spoiled ways of today. The dude was a fcking freshmans. Guys are so fcking impatient it makes me sick. He had a great fall and really stood out in a few highlight videos. Makes me sick to see how impatient guys are. How much did Mike Irving play as a freshmans?

Chise, IIRC, the Playmaker actually redshirted as a frosh

But I think a better example would be guys like Dale Dawkins and Andre Brown, guys who were relegated to back-up status for like 3 years behind 'the Bomb Squad'(Irvin, Blades, Perriman) and then in 88 after they had all left, finally got on the field consistently and provided quality play for UM as upperclassmen

What concerns me about this is that every program( quality ones, at least) need steady, experienced veterans that can come in and give you reliable play after the superstars leave early. Too much attrition, can leave some holes or vacuums in the roster. The guys like Dawkins and Brown provided a bridge before WR's like Lamar Thomas, Wesley Carrol( JC guy, so I know its a bit different), Hi-C, Kevin Williams and Darryl Spencer got on the field

But I don't think there's any doubt that this culture now is about instant gratification
