In thinking about a guy like Carroll's ability to hone in on a new position, and develop players, Im wondering why McDonald never caught a lot of heat for all the drops we had last year??

Didn't Fisch coach WRs at Denver or something? I thought he coached Brandon Marshall at some point? If I'm correct, then Fisch will have his eye on that coaching spot regardless.

I prefer he focuses on the offense play-calling and QB's only. WR is more of a natural position that you can get by with athleticism - especially in college.

Yeah......no.

So what you are saying in your well thought out, informative post, is that WR takes the same amount of technical skill than a QB in college?

Let's face it, RB and WR are the two easiest positions to transition from High School to College. Guys who are not as technically sound can still get by just by being athletic.

This is a very interesting move, and I would not be surprised if there was some additional tweaking of the staff.

Yeah . . . no.

The WR coach cant catch the ball for these kids.

A lot of those drops if not most of them are on the players. Whether it was them not looking the ball in, trying to catch it with their body, or thinking TD before they even caught it.

Cant blame coaches for everything, players have to be accountable too.

Seriously think back before McDonald about how horrible our wr's as a unit were

Bingo, now lets apply this philosophy fairly to all staff members especially those with the worst personnel

Yep. ND game not withstanding, I thought our receivers made tremendous strides this year.

But remember when we crowned Aubrey Hill after the way his guys performed as Freshmen and Sophomores?

I think we'll be fine with Carroll. He played TE, and coached the position for years. Obviously TE and WR are different positions, but the concepts are similar. A post pattern is a post pattern, a wheel route is a wheel route, and so on and so forth. He'll understand hand usage to get off the line, blocking, sitting down in zones, etc...

Plus coaches work on their skills just like players do. There's nothing stopping him from going to coaching clinics, studying with other coaches, and things like that.

I'd be more worried if Carroll had never coached offense before, but this shouldn't be a culture shock for him.

Golden is no dummy. He'll make sure Carroll avails himself of plenty of resources to get better as a coach.

Al will not fail.

And to follow up on my point about Aubrey Hill, the WRs faltered once the overall program faltered under Shannon. Hankerson thrived because he had the will to get better on his own time. None of the drills Duper had him doing were groundbreaking.

they cannot regress. I mean just think I went to four games this year. all away games and I personally saw over 10 dropped passes. If we would've caught another 15-20 passes that were dropped could've been the difference between 2-3 wins last season.

I was kind of baiting with this thread. I just dont understand why there's a virtual lynch mob on the D-Coord but McDonald was praised when his unit may have cost us as many games as the D supposedly did
