SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Miami (Fla.) Southridge Top247 defensive back
Tyrique Stevenson is all set to announce his college decision on Saturday during NBC’s broadcast of the All-American Bowl.
Stevenson checked in for the event on Monday with practice beginning Tuesday in preparation for the 19th-annual game.
Ranked by 247Sports as the No. 2 cornerback in the country and No. 25 prospect overall, Stevenson will go public with his decision between Georgia and Miami. He’s already signed a letter-of-intent for the school of his choice.
My family has been waiting on this moment since I picked up a football,” Stevenson said.
“It’s going to be very exciting because I’ll be the first one in my family to attend a big university and play college football.”
Stevenson signed on the last day of the three-day Early Signing Period.
“I was going back and forth with the other school and made a pros and cons list and I went off the pros and cons list.”
Stevenson said his decision came down to “being comfortable and just how I fit into the defense.”
For much of the process it looked like Stevenson would be a Hurricane
“My whole junior year they were leading,” he said. “I didn’t see myself nowhere else.”
But Georgia obviously changed that.
“It was coming into my senior year it evened out because both were presenting the same thing,” Stevenson said. “Miami was always leading over them because they were home.”
Then Stevenson visited Athens.
“Georgia, being in the SEC, they compete for a lot of bowl games and SEC Championships and the National Championship.”
Stevenson said
Mel Tucker taking the Colorado head coaching job was a “real shock” and a “mind-changer” at one point, but the waters steadied and he has faith in
Kirby Smart.
“Coach Smart is feisty,” Stevenson said. “He wants to win. He’s a sore loser and he wants the best for the players and for the team. He has that it in him that I’m going to do whatever and coach as hard as I need to coach for my team to win.”
Stevenson has basically lived on Miami’s campus throughout his recruitment.
“Every other day I would visit,” Stevenson said. “Just hang with my former teammate DJ (Ivey) or Gilbert (Frierson) and hang with them.”
The relationships are strong with the staff too.
“Just them being home and the relationship I have with Coach (Ephraim) Banda and the vibe I get when I go into the locker room and go to games with the players and coaches.”
Even though Stevenson was already signed when former defensive coordinator
Manny Diaz was named the head coach at Miami, he was happy to see it.
“It shocked me,” Stevenson stated. “It’s a real eye-opener.”
Stevenson likes seeing the former defensive coordinator Diaz as the head coach and the former secondary coach Banda as the defensive coordinator.

“What other place would you rather be,” he said.
We’ll know Saturday if Stevenson would prefer another place.
