Will Golden ever win a National Championship @ UM?

No. Mark Richt v.2.0. You have to have a certain amount of ruthlessness and tenacity to win the ship. See Meyer, Saban, Jimmy Johnson, Carroll, etc. This ain't a nice guy business. Those guys will do anything to win (negative recruit, play freshman over 5th year seniors, etc.). Golden isn't that type of coach. He will make us relevant like this year, and get 3/4 star recruits and every blue moon a 5 star, but he is not on that level. Not as a recruiter and not on gameday. A good coach just not great.

I understand your point, however, coaches like Coker, Stoops, Miles, Dennis Erickson, prove it wrong. Not saying the previous are what Golden should aspire to be, however, they've all won ships. Carroll can hardly be considered "ruthless". Dude is a players coach, to the bone.

Carroll and Miles have paid players to achieve greatness. Coker had one of the greatest teams of all time, you and I could have coached that team to a national title. Dennis Erickson please see Larry Coker and apply it twice. Stoops is the only one you could say achieved the ship without being ruthless, but I also believe Stoops has gotten lazy up there in Oklahoma and is not the coach he once was.

So we're left with Saban, Meyer and Jimmie Johnson. Well....they aren't walking through the door. That brings me to my previous post about everyone on this board thinking everyone is a CORCH except the previous mentioned coaches. We're in good hands IMO.

Too early to vote on this for me!
Reserve my vote until December.
Not to see how we finish but to see how Al handles this downturn.

GO CANES!!!

Fair enough.....just thought it would be a good question after seeing so many jump off the Golden train this week.

At this point, I don't see Golden ever winning a conference championship with FSU on the other side.

****, he may never win a divisional ship as long as Beamer and VT keep coaching circles around him.

Did Beamer coach "circles" around Golden last year? We had a bad....bad.....bad game at the worst time unfortunately.

No

Going by the product that has been shown thus far. No way can i see a Al Golden team win a NC.

We look worse this season. With a way weaker schedule than we did last year, and sadly. This is with a team that returned almost all of it's starters.

No sign of getting better from play to play, series to series, and game to game. 9 games into the season, and we still look like we are in week 1.

No, he did not, but that was last year. and I can agree that we had some unfortunate stuff happen, but we allowed 500+ yards to the worst offense in the ACC. There's just nothing positive I can say right now.

On Saturday morning, Yes. By Saturday night, "are you kidding me!" KoolAide bucket empty, pedestal has fallen over, blume is off rose and halo shattered. Al seems to have done so much right, but we still don't tackle--WHY? He talks better than Randy, he walks better than Randy, he managed the game better than Randy. But his friggin defense tackles the same as Randy's. The other team dones't break our tackles, **** they mostly don't even notice we are trying to make one. I am apologisng to every gator fan I know. They were right, we weren't good they just were bad. Thankfully, they stink so bad they made us look good and we got to enjoy the first 8 games. The rest of this season is going to be too painfull to watch. We should thank Morris and the seniors for all their work, and tell them they get to strat whatever bowl game we land, but it is time to see what we have for next year. Williams needs to start the rest of the games. Let's find out if he stinks so as to not waste ony snaps in sping on him. Time for lots of burn for any underclassmen not redshirting. I would say I am throwing in the towel, but U am pretty sure VT took all the towels with our manhood on Saturday.

If Al Golden is given time for sure he'll win. If he keeps recruiting the way he has, we'll have a team loaded with talent.

Nick Saban admitted in his interview with Alabama that he isn't the best X's and O's guy, but he will be the best recruiter in the nation. I think with the handcuffs off, Al Golden will be considered among the best recruiters as well and hopefully if things don't work out with our OC and DC, we get some guys that are very good in the X's and O's part of the game to help Golden's limitations in that department. Although i feel his limitations have been exaggerated with this last loss...

Yes, this has been stated before, but Golden is a CEO. He may not be the best or even a good game day coach, but in many other facets he is elite. Be patient, give him time, and he will lead us to the holy land. Stay with the process and we will eventually be so talented and focused at every position that the only natural product of that is to win. Objectively, looking at the foundations and culture he has put into place, it is impressive.

Where is the evidence that this culture he's put into place will lead to success? Temple? The best he evr did at Temple was lose 4 games and fail to win the MAC. Keep dreaming.

Great thread OP and great question

My heart tells me yes cause i really want to win and would like for golden to find success

but

My head tells me no. He won't make the necessary changes until its too late

Answer is No

It is what it is. Like I said, Golden is a good coach and will have us ranked in the top 10-15 each year, but the question was, "Will Golden lead UM to a national title", my honest assessment is that he won't. ACC Championship, sure. Big 6/BCS Bowl games, of course. A good coach, just not great...at least not yet, and team's overall talent isn't good enough to mask deficiencies in the coaching. Keep in mind, Al Golden has never even won a bowl game as a head coach. Now the story can change, if he grows a pair and gets rid of his defensive coordinator (not saying his name), his DL coach, change the defensive philosophy back to the 4-3 one gap, and keeping recruiting top talent. If he does those things, then he just might get there, but its all up to him at this point.

I believe the evidence can be found in the general direction that the Miami program is headed. In my opinion, we are still on an upward trajectory. Besides Goldens seeming inability to fire his best friend and DC, I think Golden has shown calm and rational decision making while demonstrating his commitment to this program. Maybe I am just falling for my own wish for success and Goldens gift for public speaking, but I really do not think it is time to jump ship just yet.

I don't think it's time to jump ship either. That's just ridiculous. Just as ridiculous is the notion that this team will be playing for titles anytime soon.

The answer is no one knows. All I know is he has to recruit with one hand tied behind his back going forward he won't. If he can't bring us back to national prominence in not sure anyone can.

Sure. With only "yes or no" alternatives, there are too many things in his favor to answer "no."

Good organizational skills,
a desire to work hard,
great brand,
undying support of admin post NCAA mess (meaning a good amount of time),
excellent PR/Communication skills (meaning ++ representation of school/community),
location (recruits),
location (recruits),
location (recruits)...

Yes is an easier choice than no.

But can he maximize these resources while maintaining the status quo? Basically, can he win without firing his good friend?

Answer to that IMO is no and thats why he won't win it.

I don't know. That's not the question. Given the "yes" or "no" nature of the question and the inherent advantages, I'd say yes every time because he can keep trying.
