Why this stuff will ALWAYS happen to us in recruiting....

There's also the fact we haven't been good since at the latest, 2005, When most of these kids were like 10 or 11.

You forgot Stanford.

All it takes is the right guy(s)...period.

Money was flowing, heavier, in the 70's and 80's than it is now...you had the entire state of Texas in bidding wars for players...you had dollars finding their way down to South Florida, but in the 70's, SoFla was a national recruiting area, as Miami was just there, and struggling.

But, the right guy(s) showed up and the place was on lock down.

Same applies today...get the right guy (we'll see if Golden is the right guy) and SoFla will be locked down, money or no money.

I'm with Map. This is an excuse. This wasn't a problem when we were winning.

Winning cures everything.

Let's face it. We have not been an elite program for several years now. Regardless of the recent good news on the NCAA front, there are still uncertainties.

Once we start winning again, going to bowls, putting kids in the league, you won't hear of these excuses. (And that being said, we are always going to miss on a guy or two every year. That's just life. We can't "lock down" South Florida. Impossible nowadays.)

Exactly. In 2008, we landed almost every major local kid. Were those kids more morally righteous than the recruits this year?

How many big time SEC schools were we battling for all those kids?

Didnt Ice Harris get a job here after the BTW kids we brougt in that year? Did you forget about that? Shannon was also FROM the West.... it was his school and neighborhood. People there WANTED him to succeed. Lets not act like all that happened in a vaccum.

And lets ALSO not act like Miami has never played the "game" before in recruiting.

Difference NOW is that South Florida is OPEN FOR BUSINESS, and EVERY school knows it. This is a talent rich area, with many poor and talented kids. And a local school that has been mediocre for years, and is under the NCAA microscope on top of that.

Draw the map, map.

What facts are you relying on? Do you know if Collins is getting cash from Ark, or Thomas from FSU or any other school? You see USC's committment list? You think they're doling out cash now, after recently being sanctioned and despite being a private school like us?

This is the same **** every year, whenever we don't land a certain special player. **** that. Back in 2000-2005, we didn't need excuses. We picked the right kids, we won a lot, and then we landed whoever we wanted. Only reason that cycle of success was broken is b/c Coker is AIDS.

We say this every year when kids go elsewhere. It's the go-to excuse. And yea, there's no doubt that kids are being paid, but I don't really care. As a fan, I want results, not excuses. Recruits have been getting paid for a while now, dating back at least to the early 80s, when we went on our crazy run of titles. Is it worse now? Maybe, maybe not. But it's always been there, and yet we've managed to win 5 titles (and have another stolen from us). Just win. That's all I want. Excuses mean **** to me. If the blue-chip local kids are being bought by SEC schools, then ****ing find diamonds in the rough (like Butch did).

I think this is an easy excuse we raise when **** goes wrong. We didn't seem to raise it all back in 2000-2005.

I'm so tired of this line. When facts are thrown into the equation, they are labeled as excuses. No, these are legitimate reasons as to why we struggle to recruit top level 5 star talent.

The money being involved when we were winning just means that those times should be made all the more special. Not an expectation.

Who the **** said that we won't do it again? Stop acting like not getting Matthew Thomas is the end of the program. Take a seat.

If you want to act like kids aren't getting offered lump sums of cash, then pardon me for not wanting sand in my eyes, nose, and hair. We're STILL going to win, because this whole thing that AG is building, is bigger than a kid who doesn't want to be in Miami. This is a focused, organized, and diligent effort, the likes of which we haven't seen since Butch. Sit the **** down and stop whining like a little school girl.

Still had issues with corey Liuget and Patrick Johnson.

but it was nice to see guys like Marcus forston commit early and recruit for UM.

This. So I'm from Wisconsin and when I was a kid, I watched Miami, because Wisconsin wasn't shown on TV until 1:30am because it was pre-Alvarez era, and they were always blacked out. We got every Miami game though. Ergo, Miami fan, Wisconsin who?

I appreciate and agree with CANE4LIFE's overriding point though.

Sums it up perfectly. If Stanford could do it. No way Miami should not be able to, if the HEAD GUY is the right guy. Look at Stanfords class last year. Monsters. Really wishbMiami would have that Noor Davis kid from Leesburg.

Dudes, Im NOT saying its all money. OF COURSE if we win, kids WILL want to come here. F*CK who doesnt want to go to a top program and play for championships??? Not EVERY kid is bought and paid for.

But lets not kid ourselves. Our TALENT BASE, is in a POOR, urban area, and we have been down for about a decade now. When big money comes knocking on doors in So Fla, we are facing an uphill battle, if we are not at the top of our game. I didnt say we CANT ever compete, just that we are always fighting an uphill battle.

Agreed. Next year is a big year because the talent and experience is there to win big and the junior class is loaded. If we start winning like crazy, I think you'll see a lot of these guys commit early.

Scarface has hit the nail on the head with every post in this thread. Wake up and smell the coffee. Kirland is a prime example. As Cane4Life said, this is like a taperecorder and it happens every freaking year at South Florida. Every year it hits close to home.

I'm going to assume that nobody on here has any clue as to the drama behind recruiting for any other program with the exception of possibly FSU because honestly, who gives a ****? Don't care bout nothin' but this U.

Sure, we'll probably lose out on some good talent on Wednesday. We'll probably sign some studs as well. Hopefully we'll have a few surprises. All you can do is trust in the staff to make the right moves. We're tearing **** up next year regardless. They can win with us or they can lose to us.

and Preston Parker, and Antone Smith, and every year there is a kid who slips away. Someone call me the next time we march into Alabama, or Texas, or Louisiana, and take the state's TOP player out from under Saban, or Miles' nose. LOL.

Look, we are goign to get talent, we are in a talent rich area. But guys want to act like this stuff isnt going on, and it ABSOLUTELY IS. I know for a fact it is. And always has been.

But unless we are at the TOP of our game, we are going to face tough battles. If this was an even playing field, would we even be discussing this? How would kids from Miami, want to go spend the next 4 years if f*ckign Tuscaloosa or Tallahassee or ****** MISSISSIPPI!! instead of chillin on South Beach and playing in front of friends and family?? LOL

Who the **** said I'm whining? You're the excuse-maker, not me.

What I'm saying is simple: don't automatically attribute a recruit's decision to go elsewhere as the result of illicit payments, when we have no **** clue and simply because it's a nice, convenient excuse.

I love Golden, but that doesn't mean I blindfold myself to his recruiting failures, only to remove the blindfold and blow him for his successes.

Stanford recruits a different type of kid. Their recruiting base is NOT inner city urban areas. They recruit kids like my in-law Alex Carter whose dad was an All American at ND and a 1st round pick of the Washington Redskins. BIG difference and THAT is why they can do the things they do. We on the other hand have to win in S. Florida and that means urban kids that are many times economically, educationally, and socially challenged. BIG DIFFERENC my friend.

People here are getting what C4L is saying screwed up.

This isn't and shouldn't be a reason that we don't make it back to prominence, but to ignore that the practice exists is naivete, AT BEST. Many of you unfortunately latched on to Matthew Thomas as a sign of the program's resurgence, when the program's resurgence is in fact much larger than the commitment of one player. It's bigger than Duke for christ sake. This is about the culture that Al is building. Whether it is successful or not remains to be seen, but it CERTAINLY shouldn't be judged by not getting the commitments of every great player in South Florida, when there is money going around.

We can and will win with or without them. Paying players isn't an excuse, it's a fact of life that we have to deal with and no...it won't stop the train.

Because, you know, they see Amari Cooper balling in the national championship game on primetime TV as a freshman, and think, "why not me?"

Lately, you're like chicken little. Your avatar is reflective of your mental state lately.

We'll be fine.

Its was a problem when we were winning, too. Dwayne Bowe?? Max Jean Gilles? ...but, yes, I agree, its an excuse, but an excuse can often be a reason, too. Still no excuse for failure (especially the top targets)...

Location is still the #1 factor in recruiting.
