Why “controlling the ball like App” likely won’t work vs TAMU

It’s finally time for my scorching hot take on this one:

This game will all come down to how our offensive line performs.

If they don’t establish themselves we will not win this game. If they do we will.

You’re a pretty smart fella, shwarma.

Let’s just say…..you’re over the target. Unfortunately for all of us..

This could all come back to it being fringe comments from fringe fans that are a little reactionary when we are talking about criticism

I mean your post is totally valid. Some of the stuff I’ve seen about Rooster was over the top imo

Lashlee has been getting quite a pass from a lot of fans who don’t like Gattis, but how he was using Knighton last year was definitely not ideal (didn’t have much of a choice though since no one else was stepping up)

The hope for me with Gattis is he will be better at using the backs and TEs because I think we lacked in that area last year. So maybe all of this is for nothing…we will see I guess

I may be one who's been too harsh on Knighton. It's just hard to look past his numbers. The OL & Scheme aren't all to blame here.

But I get it with Knighton. It's easy to see in the practice videos his speed/athleticism is on a different level than Parrish/Franklin. I'm with you in hoping Gattis can scheme ways to get the most out of Knighton. But I also think losing Chaney/Citizen is a bigger blow to our run game than people realize.

Oh I’m with you for sure. I don’t want to be the guy in this thread acting like we can’t criticize Mallory or Rooster and it’s off limits or something

Maybe I see the Gameday threads too often where people really say some wild emotional **** haha

Totally agree on Chaney and Citizen. I’m cautiously optimistic because of the comp but Thad stepping up would be huge. He looks like he’s put in a lot of work from last year. As much as I love Parrish and Rooster, we need a bigger back to mix it up as well. That way we can use guys like Rooster to their strengths instead of weaknesses like last year

Saturday can’t get here fast enough

we need rooster more featured in the passing game. hes the only explosive skill talent we have thats proven at least. hes the only threat out of the backs that are healthy that can house one too. hopefully w increased reps now that hes healthy again, well see him more out of the back field as a pass catcher

Yessir when it comes to mismatches I don’t see us creating any with our WRs in this game coming up. So we need to scheme them

Guys like X, Rooster, Arroyo (Mallory hopefully) are those guys that can do it. Would love to see him mixed in while we use Parrish and Thad to move the chains

Thad's important. We need a big back. I like what I've seen, but he hasn't faced a run defense ranked in the Top 90 on any of his carries yet.

He's going from one end of the super soft spectrum to about as good a run defense he'll see this weekend.

I'm hoping our RB's step up, but won't look too much into it if they get stuffed (which is more what I'm expecting). TAMU is just really tough vs the run.

I think the game comes down to tackling. If we form (immediate) tackle like App St did, we’ll win. If the first man in the area gets the opponent down, we win. I trust Steele will have a good gameplan, the players must disengage blocks and tackle in big games.

I’m not concerned with Gattis. His gameplan will be awesome, as said, the Oline must execute and we’ll pull away.

Over 28 minutes of App doing an unbelievable job of controlling the ball to maximum effectiveness against an elite defense. I know it’s been mentioned in other threads, but there’s a reason why UM cannot expect to win in the same way (I’ve said if this game was replayed 10 times, I think TAMU wins 7 of them). App State excelled at three key things:

1) Staying ahead on early downs. This is possibly the second reproducible aspect because TAMU’s DL just doesn’t seem focused on TFLs or negative plays. This seems to be by design, and can be exploited by a sound run scheme and talented backs. This left App with manageable 3rd downs, tying directly into point #2:

2) An absurd hit rate on 3rd and 4th down, often by the thinnest of margins. App finished the game 12-25 on those downs, 3-5 on 4th alone, which is incredible against this defense. But the most insane aspect of it is the sheer amount of conversions they only barely got. I counted 9 times that their conversion was no more than 2 yards beyond the line to gain, and many were 1 yard or exact. Full credit to App for getting those yards, because they won them the game.

3) Getting TAMU off the field. By contrast, A&M was 2-8 on third down (yeah, they had 8 total 3rd downs in the entire game) and no 4th down attempts. This is easily the most reproducible part of the trifecta, as what the Aggies have currently shown is the ability to square up a rifle on their toes and shoot them off one at a time. Aside from a play or two where Achane got loose, their offense was DOA, giving rise to doom-wishing scenarios of the Aggies playing Iowa in a bowl game. Miami just can’t make those conversations easier than App did, especially early on and out of the half. TAMU will make mistakes all on their own, if you just let them.

Hope this sparks conversation and optimism as to how we win. Some of you had great thoughts in other threads, if you don’t mind sharing them here.

Yep if we try to play big boy ball with them and control the clock we will take the L. Tvd needs to play lights out. There will be times the crowd gets a couple on us so we need to be ready and disciplined

IMO, you have to come out up tempo and throwing the ball to TEs and receivers. I think they will be expecting run heavy from us.
that's fine but 3 - 4 yards on first down is key, IMHO. We need to stay on schedule to maintain diversity of play-call.

Short hitches and curls aren't **** but they get keep you on schedule and wear teams down.

Winning games by turning them into 9-7 snoozefests and then hoping we'll magically have the ball in the last possession and kick a field goal is a strategy for losers. If you're a good team, you go and kick the other team's *** on sides of the ball so that there is no doubt in their minds that they got whupped. Score a lot of points. Don't let the other team score points. It really is that simple.
