Why “controlling the ball like App” likely won’t work vs TAMU

I think Mallory is actually one of the more overrated players in our recent history. His skill set is vastly overrated. Pretty good speed. Inconsistent hands. Very average RAC. Very poor blocker. This is not a special composite. He benefits from our TE history but bears no special attributes and he really is woeful as a blocker. You cannot teach him physicality.
I agree other than the RAC part. I would say that’s probably the strongest part of his game

Though I don’t think he’s consistent with that either

I think maybe this entire conversation comes back to some people overrating him and then others pushing back on that instead of just taking him for what it was

So “hate” probably wasn’t a good word for me to use

Do we NEED to grind it out and go for winning the TOP battle? No. Their QB sucks, and ours is superior.

Will we try to grind it out and go for TOP, that's a whole different story.

There's no reason we shouldn't hope to hit TAMU with a balanced attack, and attempt explosive plays.

I'm not beaten down into the Big Ten ground-n-pound bunker yet.
We should grind it out and take advantage of the TOP. But, hit the explosive plays bc we CAN. It’s situational and advantage. So, oddly, I agree with y’all.

Yep. From an ideal perspective, the App State game plan is the worst way to approach Texas A&M.

A&M can’t generate explosive plays, and plays a slow, methodical style.

The best way to beat a team like that isn’t to shorten the game down even more and play ball control.

It’s to force them to try to match scores with you.

But that wasn’t an option for App State, so I get why they did what they did.

Agreed. UMs biggest strength is its QB. Let TVD win or lose the game. Hes either going to turn out to be the 1st round pick we think he is or he won't. If it's the latter, it's important to know for the rest of the season. Can Cristobal trust TVD to win games or is TVD going to be revealed to simply be a good game manager? If it's the latter, it doesn't mean UM cant win 10 games this year, but it does mean that the offense needs to go through the RBs, and not the QB. TAMU thinks UM will try replicate the App State gameplan and grind clock. I think we should do the opposite and let TVD be a gunslinger. Score quickly and often, force TAMU to try and keep up.

Good points

I’m not going to just go back and forth about this. I said what I said for a reason. Because I’ve read it over and over again. For years.

Then again I may just be reading fringe comments from a few people that are sticking out to me, in the same way anyone defending his blocking would have to be insane
Ok we don’t have to go back and forth, but every time you’ve read it, it’s been the truth and then dudes move on. No one lies on Mallory. Numerous player’s names become thread titles after each and every single game we play: Ivey, Flagg, etc. No one does that to Mallory, even after the Pitt game that he almost fumbled away, everyone forgave that.

Rooster has received much more criticism this off season despite his lofty contributions last season. Lots of better players (ex: Brevin Knight) have received thread titles criticizing them, but not Mallory. Everyone knows that it would not be received well.

Rooster and Harley were bigger and more reliable weapons than him and maybe even Restrepo last year imho.

The Rooster criticism was really bizarre

Be good to have him back full strength he’s one of the better weapons on the team for sure especially if he’s not being tasked with carrying it 20 times right up the middle

Spot on but Mallory plays because they (the coaches) need to give him the chance to impress the scouts and show loyalty to him as he has shown for us.
I could be dead wrong here, but I don't see why he starts if that is not the reason. I cringe every time the ball is thrown his way.

We need to play to our strengths and not their weakness. At this point, we have to live or die on TVD's arm

If I am Mario, first play of the game, I am going deeeeeeeep to send the message to everyone “we are coming.” Similar to 98 vs FSU and 99 vs. VT. We may lose but it won’t be because we didn’t leave everything on the field.
Let's hope it's not like Notre Dame in 2012 where Dorsett dropped what should have been a TD on the opening drive.

Here is another reason why it might be more difficult. Watching @Stevo365 film breakdown.

This fvking dude, Mallory, has been here 5 years and he still can’t block in the run or passing game. This should’ve been a 10+ yard run instead of a 5 yard gain.

Time for Arroyo to be TE #1 or even Marmarelli. At this point Mallory should be TE#3 only brought in on passing downs.

What’s the definition of insanity?

I don’t hate Mallory buy that play made me salty.

Over 28 minutes of App doing an unbelievable job of controlling the ball to maximum effectiveness against an elite defense. I know it’s been mentioned in other threads, but there’s a reason why UM cannot expect to win in the same way (I’ve said if this game was replayed 10 times, I think TAMU wins 7 of them). App State excelled at three key things:

1) Staying ahead on early downs. This is possibly the second reproducible aspect because TAMU’s DL just doesn’t seem focused on TFLs or negative plays. This seems to be by design, and can be exploited by a sound run scheme and talented backs. This left App with manageable 3rd downs, tying directly into point #2:

2) An absurd hit rate on 3rd and 4th down, often by the thinnest of margins. App finished the game 12-25 on those downs, 3-5 on 4th alone, which is incredible against this defense. But the most insane aspect of it is the sheer amount of conversions they only barely got. I counted 9 times that their conversion was no more than 2 yards beyond the line to gain, and many were 1 yard or exact. Full credit to App for getting those yards, because they won them the game.

3) Getting TAMU off the field. By contrast, A&M was 2-8 on third down (yeah, they had 8 total 3rd downs in the entire game) and no 4th down attempts. This is easily the most reproducible part of the trifecta, as what the Aggies have currently shown is the ability to square up a rifle on their toes and shoot them off one at a time. Aside from a play or two where Achane got loose, their offense was DOA, giving rise to doom-wishing scenarios of the Aggies playing Iowa in a bowl game. Miami just can’t make those conversations easier than App did, especially early on and out of the half. TAMU will make mistakes all on their own, if you just let them.

Hope this sparks conversation and optimism as to how we win. Some of you had great thoughts in other threads, if you don’t mind sharing them here.

Dont forget on first scoring drive app st got TWO face mask penalties and then got multiple turnovers from AM..

AM also melted the clock on that last drive for whatever reason then decided to call timeout and then kick a fg.. lol wut

To me it’s all in the trenches. We can throw waves of DL at them situationally maybe 8-10 deep without much drop off. We can also go 6-7 deep on our OL without much drop off.

Will 8&4 think we’ll try and replicate what ASU did on offense or think we’ll try and be different to throw them off? Either way, Gattis hasn’t shown much and must open the playbook to keep them on their heels.

I'll take the bet..... You do know there true fresh QB is a stud. They overlooked App state and you know it.

This is it.

The likelihood of us beating TAMU with 3 yards and a cloud of dust THIS game is… very low.

TVD is a rhythm passer (see last drive of the 1st half against SoMiss).

TAMU has too much talent and motivation for us to be able to win without TVD playing at a high level.

Gattis and Mario have to play to TVD’s strengths to maximize win probability.

Here’s to hoping that’s the game plan.

Here's to hoping they've been working the game plan since January!

This is a big game for us - win/loss ratio, recruiting magnet, establishing credibility EARLY, setting confidence levels, and getting our minds back into being the (Goliath) Giant Killers once again.
