When we play man...

Gunter was right where he needed to be he just didn't turn his head and play the ball. He looked like a slapdick that had never played corner.

He looked and acted properly. It was a great throw and catch by the dook players. If they run that play 15 times that game they probably only complete it twice. I had no problem with that play. I'll take Gunter over McCaffrey in one on one coverage all day long. The real problem is that our DC has no idea how to structure blitz schemes and has even less of an idea of how to change them up from week to week so teams arent prepared for them.

Playing press man when you have horrible safeties and your front four generates zero pass rush? ....yeah great idea.

So what kind of idea is playing the same exact defense but eliminating the press component, leaving your corners playing on the line without the benefit of trying to hinder/alter the receiver's route?

noticed it last year..its like their just told to play up...they dont even try to get their hands on the guy...and honestly i think thats what Tracy Howard came in d oing..as that was his game in high school(hes not very fast , but is strong and instictive)..and likely where the head butting with No Frio probably started.

The problem when we play man is the fact that our blitzes never get there. Dude's blitz schemes suck.

wildcat...dude blitzes from 20 yards away.......

that sh*t was downright pee wee watching the dialed up blitzes we shot @ Jameis Winston....The same Lb blitzed every time and did so from 10 yds back and Mr .Winston calmly waited for the cleared area and threw 5 yd passes that led to 15-20+ yard gains time after time.

I thought Randy Blitz scheme sucked...where he would just walk up the olb on the end of the line and send em....but got**** im dreaming of having that again....like literally dreaming, hoping, to see Perryman play downhill.

Our Blitz scheme honestly in all honesty....has to be one of the least creative/worse ive seen in awhile...i played college ball...and left tackle at that...our sh*t is basic and i would of ate alll of it up...from the 3rd down bull sh*t twist with 230 pd de's...to the 10 yd delayed olb blitz.

No he didn't. He played the ball poorly.

Indeed.

I am not a defensive expert by any stretch, but The overall philosophy that the staff employs is more of a cloud-based coverage; basically allowing the underneath plays and rallying to the ball (hopefully in front of the marker) relying on overall team speed. I think the staff runs this because of the pass rushing and safety play deficiencies. The problem with this is that it allows mediocre (at best) quarterbacks to find a rhythm and allows his receivers to find the holes in zones or get separation when in man. It also places too much emphasis on discipline and technique (I.e. tackling). The result: Logan Thomas looking like Cam Newton; Duke having their way with us; 5 yard crossing patterns going for 60+ yard touchdowns; and all of us calling for coach D's head (which I am in favor of).

One defense that I enjoy watching is Missouri's defense because they are able to do so many different things based on one thing: 4-man Pressure. We can't even get pressure from our blitz packages (as elaborate as they may be) and, when combined with a lack of discipline, technique, and experience, we have a defense that makes opposing offenses standing in line to get their turn at us.

Nope they run that sh*t because its the only thing they know ..(Its AL groh's fail acc defense) and the fact that they have beem a "homecoming" game their whole career and it has turned into their philosophy of being the underdog or less talented so lets just play hanging on....realize they have never been the aggressors...ever..in their coaching career....even when they were loaded in the"mac" when the big game came...the other team took their food....and imo its because of this same philosophy.....playing it "safe"...not caring about giving up a ton of yards...all that is defeatist talk that workd when your at Temple/UVA because those places arent playing for keeps....u gotta bring it here...and i think Golden is just realizing with the sh*tshow the last 3 weeks...he loses here and it all unravels everything he built up.....i honestly am hoping for a shannon/usf type thing this wknd...as im officialy through with our dc.

Like even with a slight improvement next yr i wouldnt be happy because i believe the guy isnt a um quality coach.

We ain't gonna be any better next season. Most of the 2014 talent infusion won't be able to contribute for another couple years.

The talent excuse will be in full force again next season.

What Canes33 has said, and I think it dovetails with what Spence and Futch said when criticizing our current players. We dont have as much speed back there as we think we do. Spence's point was that the coaches have seen how our DBs match up against fast receivers every day in practice, and they make their decisions based on what they know of the players they have. We have good Corners, but our Safeties are absolutely HORRIFIC. You couple that with a weak pass rush, and its a recipie for disaster.

Right or wrong, it seems clear that Donofrio is calling what he is because he has NO faith in these guys and is trying to minimize damage and getting torched by big plays.
