When we play man...

Playing press man when you have horrible safeties and your front four generates zero pass rush? ....yeah great idea.

So what kind of idea is playing the same exact defense but eliminating the press component, leaving your corners playing on the line without the benefit of trying to hinder/alter the receiver's route?

Because if we play press and the receivers beat the jam our safeties are not good enough to cover it. Combine that with a QB having all day to throw, you're basically giving up an automatic TD every time if you miss the jam.

So you suggest the status quo? Great idea..

I've been making a mental note to see where our DB's are on 3rd down. What I've consistently seen is this:

* 3rd and 4 - DB's 4 yards off the line
* 3rd and 7 - DB's 7 yards off the line
* 3rd and 12 - DB's 10+ yards off the line

I watched it all night long in the stadium against Va Tech. Against Duke I was literally yelling at my TV, "Come the **** up!!!" It's kind of maddening. lol

So I assume the idea is to stop them at or short of the first down marker by having the DBs react to where the ball is thrown?

Not always, there are times where we lined up between 3-5 yards off the receiver, and I watched intently looking for a bump from our corners. The McAffrey play stood out to me because Gunter is like twice his size and I figured he could manhandle him at the line. Sadly, it didn't happen.

Because Bump and run is only a form of man coverage. You can play match up zone or straight man to man.

Bump and run is the most aggressive man style.

We do not run it because it is not a "safe" style of defense to play.

If you miss the jam you can give up a big play so No D' Ofrio doesn't want to call it because he's a puzzy.

You can get beat bad if you miss the jam but a guy like Gunter would rape him if he got his hands on him and rerouted him easily, IMO.

But No D would rather err on the side of caution

:ohlord:

If they don't want to do it bc there is no pass rush, then why the **** do they have three DL playing 2-gaps with ZERO CREATIVE BLITZES.

Do they really expect Shayon Green to be the answer to their pass rush?

Here's an idea, dial up a well designed blitz, or move Chick inside and have AQM and McCord play more downs!

It's like they fall back on this off man and zone stuff bc they can't get a pass rush, instead of DOING OBVIOUS THIGS TO HELP THE PASS RUSH!!!

Gunter was right where he needed to be he just didn't turn his head and play the ball. He looked like a slapdick that had never played corner.

Gunter has always seemed to get undeserved love from the boards IMO. I agree with the Barry Jackson column today that referred to him as serviceable. They should've tried him at safety last year, coaches fell in love with his size at CB I guess.

Our Cbs are actually worse than they appear. They are seldom challenged because teams either run on us to easily, or get what they want against our LBS and against Highsmith.

Don't get me wrong. I think Gunter's a good DB and a real baller.

I personally am not a fan of big cornerbacks unless they are rare sick athletes. In a perfect world I would have Gunter at Safety and put smaller guys with better foot quickness on the edges like Corn Elder.

Amen, especially in a zone system.

But wait we are a man-man base. No a zone base. And AQM and McCord are OLB.......but also DEs.....

And we wonder why there is no development???? Pick a front and a coverage shell and play that as a base defense, recruit towards it, and add in a few different looks. We aren't playing Tom Brady, do some basic stuff with th best athletes executing perfectly and you'll have a top 10 defense easily.

The problem when we play man is the fact that our blitzes never get there. Dude's blitz schemes suck.

This.

It's been this for a long time. People yell "blitz" but apparently don't watch when we do it. NONE of our upperclassmen know how to blitz. Bush was good at it but he has been hobbled. DP could probably be a beast at it but you can't risk taking him out of the equation with noone that can back him up.

Combine bad blitz schemes with bad blitzers and you have a complete **** show.

If Jimmy Johnson were coaching he'd put both McCord and AQM with their hands on the ground and attack the offense. No more 3-4. Just four down and penetrate.

Noticed this as well. It seemed like in the 1st drive of the game we changed our philosophy, then on the 2nd drive went right back to it.
I too noticed this we played press first coverage three and out then we went back to soft zone and soft man smh

I thought to myself "I must be missing something", which certainly happens.

Both TM and AQM put their hands on the ground and "attack" the offense. They just got stoned.

No D and Golden has never heard about a coverage sack. If you re-route the wr the qb has to hold the ball that much longer. You think that might be the splitsecond our DL needs to get to the QB. Their have been so many times our DL had no chance to get a sack because the wr is open immediately or the outlet is in ton of space. It goes hand in hand. These are simple concepts. Too complicated for No D.

I noticed it last year and again on the same play you reference. I am a believer in press man (bump and run) coverage. However, IMO there is no reason to play man at the line of scrimmage if you aren't going to bump the WR. Why we press up but don't bump is beyond comprehension. You have to disrupt the timing of the play. If your going to give a free release, just play 10 yards off which I hate

this. the one huge advantage of press man, is the bump to disrupt the route and the QB's timing. I can't conceive why we would not jam the receivers.

If we jammed WRs or tried to disrupt routes that would be against our philosophy. We do nothing to alter what the opposing offense wants to do.

I would love to sit in opposing teams offensive meeting heading into the week. Those guys have to be giddy as **** knowing their pregame plan will work for 60 minutes.

I am not a defensive expert by any stretch, but The overall philosophy that the staff employs is more of a cloud-based coverage; basically allowing the underneath plays and rallying to the ball (hopefully in front of the marker) relying on overall team speed. I think the staff runs this because of the pass rushing and safety play deficiencies. The problem with this is that it allows mediocre (at best) quarterbacks to find a rhythm and allows his receivers to find the holes in zones or get separation when in man. It also places too much emphasis on discipline and technique (I.e. tackling). The result: Logan Thomas looking like Cam Newton; Duke having their way with us; 5 yard crossing patterns going for 60+ yard touchdowns; and all of us calling for coach D's head (which I am in favor of).

One defense that I enjoy watching is Missouri's defense because they are able to do so many different things based on one thing: 4-man Pressure. We can't even get pressure from our blitz packages (as elaborate as they may be) and, when combined with a lack of discipline, technique, and experience, we have a defense that makes opposing offenses standing in line to get their turn at us.
