What is wrong with our defense?

Something I noticed I the last play was 17 Bobby Washington was playing linebacker. Maybe they wanted speed to prevent any screens breaking out. Something to look out fo in the future.

I think the team as a whole doesn't care unless the game is hyped. They were sleep walking 3 weeks in a row. Didn't really matter against A&M and Ball State because of the sheer overwhelming talent edge. Gators game lots of people thought we'd lose so our team got up for it.
You’re seeing this all around college football now…look at all the upsets this past week. Stacking talent is easy for some of these coaches, but getting these kids to stay focused week in and week out is one of the hardest jobs for a CFB head coach now in my opinion. You can no longer just out-talent many of these teams. A few really good players or a well devised game plan can neutralize your talent advantage if you don’t bring the intensity each game.

We don’t have the secondary horses for as much man as we run. We 1000% need to sit in zone more and let this front earn their money. UL will be a shootout but we can’t make it easy for them and allow them to just pick on 0, and 25 all day.
This right here!!!! I know Guidry likes to get up into the WRs while he creates havoc in the front 7 but man sometimes it just better to get lined up right and play fundamentally sound football.

We still have a top 20 defense. Fix the chunk plays and we will be fine. That might mean inserting Patterson. If we do that we don’t have to play flawless offense. The offense will actually play better because they won’t feel pressure to be perfect.
Don’t know what stats say & don’t care. We played some early games against teams that couldn’t score in a whorehouse. This is not a top 20 defense.

This is just how it is in 2024.
Every team in the Nation is asking how they can improve their defense. Even the very top teams have looked horrible at times.

It’s a very good but flawed team we have. The biggest flaw is the secondary, and it’s been exposed and taken advantage of twice in a row now. We thankfully have a bi week to learn from that and make some much needed adjustments. Hopefully having Bain back and shaking off the rust can help mask the issues a bit better too.

It's a combination of things. Some of it is scheme, some of it is talent, some of is players making mental mistakes and reverting to bad technique. Take the Jayden Ott touchdown in the red zone. Maguioa had him basically dead to rights in what would have been a tackle for loss, or at the very least, slowing him down until help arrived. All he had to do was square his shoulders and wrap up. Instead he comes in too fast and too low, going for the big hit, so there's no leverage and Ott is able to go right past him for a td. There were a few other crucial missed tackles that led to big gains by Cal.

@fraggle If at this point you can't see the answer to the above question with your own eyes after having watched this game all your life, then I don't know what to tell you.
I see what is wrong but soliciting opinions from others to see if I am missing anything. Not mentioned is that as good as our DL is supposed to be something is remiss, it seems to me they are not functioning as a unit running coordinated schemes and such.

We're doing a **** poor job of communicating after presnap motion, which has lead to really bad busts and huge plays.

Take this play against Cal when no one picked up Ott out of the backfield. As far as I can tell:

-19 is under the impression that when his guy motioned away that he must drop and become a safety, which would have pushed 7 (not pictured) from the center of the field to the far hash to help on the 2-3 targets on that side
-But 1 still thinks he's responsible for the TE 10, which leaves no one for Ott leaking out of the backfield

Assuming 19 didn't ***** up shouldn't 1 have shifted over to cover Ott and 0 taken 10? If 24 was supposed to drop and cover Ott then we've lost the edge and QB just keeps it off tackle

Cal's last 4 games they scored 31, 21, 31 and then 9 at fsu. Last night 38 against us and last week VT scored 34. To win out we have to do better. In Spring and Fall we heard how awesome our DL was and expected domination with lots of sacks yet we look pedestrian. Our defense played real well against the gator and a gator friend said we played like we had 12 men on defense. We swarmed and stopped plays in their track at the swamp yet lately we can't tackle and a TE out ran our DB's 57 yards for a TD. All I know is what I see isn't working too well. Are we simply not very good? We know fsu sucks yet they held Cal to 9. Hurricane defenses are supposed to be intense and good tacklers, what is remiss? Is it coach or players or just bad luck since everyone wants to bring their best game against us? How many times can Cam Ward bail us out?
@fraggle their problem is they’ve read too many of your threads.

Keep poRsting away

At a certain point we are going to have to be okay with letting teams move the ball between the 20s and holding teams to field goals. We cannot keep giving up explosives looking like a manny defense. We have an offense that can trade touchdowns for field goals. It’s time to play assignment football and keep things in front of us. And I usually would completely disagree with everything I just said. But holy **** if we can’t stop giving up 50 yard explosives to absolutely terrible offenses, we don’t have a choice

Some of the issues are being talked about in here. The last 3 opponents schemed against our weaknesses. VT and particularly Cal used completely different playbooks against us. Cox took full advantage of their bye week. They did great. Intentional player match-up's against our LB's and S's. Minimizing our strength, DL. Guidry is definitely getting out coached. He has a tablet. It shouldn't take till halftime to make adjustments today and even then it's not good enough for me. Against basic schemes our D is good. If he keeps playing man, these schemed chunk plays are going to continue. I don't get it. It is Guidry's fault for certain.

One - our DMs are weak - we knew that coming in. Two - we are obsessed with sacks and teams know this and use it against us

What worries me - we have played against some very average QBs

Aggressive over pursuit is actually hurting our D. They’re playing tough and hard but need much more discipline.
As previous poster said, opposing coaches are taking advantage.

IMO we need to lean more on our supposed strength which is the D line. I like the blitz packages but they put you dbs one on one or stress the safeties. We need to put more guys in coverage and let the d line eat.

"There is nothing wrong with our defense, it is impenetrable!"

A defense that gets outplayed from an opposing teams offense is one thing. And a tired poor performance D that can regroup and overcome a 25 point deficit is another. How many past Miami defenses could have done that. Most likely they lose by 50
